Make checks payable to SSU. $400 Tuition This fee covers all workshop sessions and classes, and all materials and musical scores for your ensemble and the workshop choir. $400 Accommodations (optional) This fee covers four nights and linens in a private bedroom and bath, all meals, and a parking permit. Cancellations Sorry, no refunds after dates listed below. Tuition Singers may cancel their workshop registration and receive a refund (less $25) if written notification is received on or before May18, 2009. Accommodations Those who have paid for campus housing/meals will receive a refund (less $35) if written cancellation is received on or before May 6, 2009. Academic Credit You may earn one semester unit of SSU academic credit for workshop participation at a cost of $55. Registration materials will be provided when you arrive on campus. Accommodations You are encouraged to stay in Beaujolais Village, the deluxe on-campus residence apartments nearest Ives Hall and the Green Music Center where workshop sessions will be held. The four-night package fee is $400 for a private bedroom and bath, linens, all meals, and parking permit. SSU campus maps are available at www.sonoma.edu/university/images/artistic_map1.pdf All rooms are non-smoking and equipped with free cable and Internet (high speed ethernet) jacks as well as a telephone jack for local and 800 calls. No cords, cables or technical assistance are supplied. For your own pleasure and use, you may choose to bring a tuning fork, musical instruments, bathing suit and/or a bicycle. The following items are NOT provided in SSU residence apartments: soap, alarm clock, hair drier, iron, cooking utensils, waste basket, radio, television, telephone, computer. Laundry and recreational facilities are available for a small charge. Swimming is free in the Residential Community pool and hot tub. There is no air conditioning in any of SSU s residential suites nor is it usually needed. Key deposit A $50 residence key deposit (check or cash) must be paid at the time of check in and is returned when the key is turned in. Linens Included are a pillow with case, two sheets, blanket, comforter, two bath towels and a washcloth. Meals and dietary options Meals are catered by the campus food service and include vegetarian choices. The dining area used by workshop residents is approximately a 10-minute walk from rehearsal and lodging spaces. Extended stay If you wish to come a day early (Tuesday, June 23) or stay Sunday night (June 28), you may extend your reservation for $62 a night. This fee includes lodging and parking, but not food service. Guests You may reserve accommodations for a guest at the same rate and for the same time period as your own stay in campus housing. Please indicate the guest s name on your registration form. Children under 18 and pets cannot be accommodated in campus residences. Alcohol Responsible use of alcohol is allowed in SSU residence halls. It must be consumed indoors and out of plain view. There is a corkage fee of $8.00 for wine brought to meals. Disability SSU residential facilities contain units accessible to people with disabilities. Please inform us in advance and in writing if you need special accommodation because of a disability. Weather and Dress June days in Rohnert Park are quite variable and can be hot and sunny or chilly and foggy. Average temperatures range from a high of 82 F to a low of 51 F. In June, rain is unlikely. Dress in Sonoma County is casual, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Think layers and bring a sweater and long pants so you re ready for either quite warm or fairly cool conditions. Concert Dress You are expected to provide and wear appropriate and conservative concert attire. Program One of the best musical experiences of my life. Chanticleer members couldn t have been more gracious. As a second year participant I was just as excited and fulfilled as I was the first year. CHANTICLEER, its Artistic Director Joseph Jennings, Music Director Matt Oltman, and Robert Worth, the Director of Choral Music at Sonoma State University, welcome you to the fourth CHANTICLEER IN SONOMA choral workshop. Our program offers exceptional opportunities to help you become the best choral singer that you can be. The workshop commences at 2:00 pm Wednesday, June 24 with a tutti workshop choir rehearsal and concludes with a Sunday concert for family and friends featuring Chanticleer and workshop participants at 4:00 pm, June 28. The program is packed with opportunities to learn more about choral singing through participation, observation, and conversation. Highlights include observing a Chanticleer rehearsal and a solo vocal master class. Each day includes chamber ensemble and tutti rehearsals with Chanticleer members, vocal and choral instruction in classes and rehearsals, and opportunities for informal interactions with Chanticleer and other workshop participants. Evening programs offer more music making and social interaction. A detailed calendar of workshop sessions and events will be provided when you arrive. A sample day s schedule is at the workshop website: www.sonoma-choral.org/pub/htdocs/chanticleerschedule.html Workshop Choir Singing in the workshop choir provides all participants the opportunity to rehearse and perform a wide range of music alongside the members of Chanticleer, under the direction of Joseph Jennings. Tutti rehearsals feature exemplary warm-ups, professional rehearsal techniques, helpful performance tips, and the thrill of making music in the company of America s premier classical vocal ensemble. Comments: I loved the tutti warm ups; I ll use the techniques back home. Rehearsals were smooth and efficient and very productive and fun. It was a real privilege to sing alongside Chanticleer and be coached by them. I had such joy singing here. Chamber Ensemble Singing Small ensembles are an intense and unique choral feature of the workshop. These subgroups of singers are formed on the first day and coached throughout the workshop by Chanticleer. In order to create well-balanced groups, Chanticleer members will conduct individual and sectional voice placement hearings for all singers. Be prepared to sing a short solo song (it may be your audition recording song or another a capella piece) and demonstrate your vocal range in a five-minute individual session on Wednesday afternoon. In sectionals later that day, voices will be matched for the best possible groupings. Musical scores are distributed at the initial ensemble sessions. So, sharpen your sight-singing skills! Past participants agreed: Such a high level of music-making in the small groups! Chanticleer established a good balance between teaching, leading and giving us ownership of the pieces. Repertoire Tutti repertoire will be posted at the workshop website, and scores for these selections will be sent to you well in advance of the workshop with the expectation that you know the notes for your voice part when you arrive on June 24. Your individual preparation is vital because it allows workshop rehearsals to focus on important aspects of choral interpretation and music making, rather than note learning. Practice tapes are not provided; neither are they encouraged. Classes Optional morning classes in vocal production, theory, IPA and sight-singing are open to all and well received: Classes were well presented, with excellent, useful information. Chanticleer members were very accessible and willing to share their knowledge. Selected participants participate in a solo master class. Singers noted: Being pushed to the next level was most valuable to me. Critique was offered in a helpful way. Recording Neither audio nor video recording of sessions is permitted. 6/17/09 3 of 6
Arrival & Check In for Residents The workshop takes place at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, 45 miles north of San Francisco in the heart of Northern California s wine country. The campus is beautifully landscaped and near several famous viticultural areas and tourist destinations. Airport Shuttle Transportation via Airport Express is available to Rohnert Park from both San Francisco and Oakland airports (www.airportexpressinc.com). Currently the fare is $32 ($30 seniors and students with ID); cash only. The drive lasts 90 minutes to two hours. Taxis run from the Rohnert Park stop to SSU for approximately $17. If you call us several days in advance at 707-664-4234, we will arrange for a volunteer to pick you up at the Rohnert Park stop. Campus parking permits are required and included in the accommodation package. - - - Check in Check in time on Wednesday, June 24, is in 119 Ives Hall between 11:00 am and 1:30 pm. If you plan to arrive at Sonoma State University before 11:00 am on Wednesday, please notify us to make individual arrangements for check in. Resident meals begin with dinner on Wednesday evening. Check out Check out is on Sunday morning, June 28 (time TBA). If needed, we will store your luggage until after the closing concert. We will also arrange for a volunteer to take you to the Rohnert Park airport shuttle stop after the concert if we have your request well in advance. Check in & Meals for Daily Commuters Please plan to check in at 119 Ives Hall by 1:30 pm on Wednesday, June 24. Commuters must purchase daily parking permits ($2.50) from the campus permit machines for weekday parking. Place your permit on your dashboard before you come to Ives 119 for your welcome packet. You are invited to dine with resident workshop participants in the Zinfandel Dining Room, but you must purchase meals from campus food service in advance. A survey that includes meal prices will be sent to commuters prior to the workshop to determine which meals you wish to purchase. You are not permitted to bring your own food into Zinfandel. On weekdays, you may purchase sandwiches and salads at an outdoor café on campus. There also is fast food, ice cream, ethnic restaurants, and a convenience store within easy walking distance from campus. An excellent supermarket is located in a small strip mall, a little more than a mile away. Plans are turning into exciting realities as June 24 approaches. Chanticleer is planning a program that is packed with opportunities to you to learn more about choral singing through participation, observation, and conversation. Below, a few features in this year s workshop are highlighted: Redwood Outing Wednesday morning, June 24 Early arrivers are invited to visit a splendid redwood grove, departing at 8:00 am for an hour s drive into Sonoma s beautiful west county area to Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve. After an easy hour-long hike, the group will have lunch en route and return to SSU by 1:00 pm, in time to review the music before the opening tutti rehearsal at 2:00. Note: you will be asked to indicate your interest in this outing in an email survey so that we can organize transportation. Morning Classes Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8:30-9:30 Participants from 2007 will recognize three of the four classes offered this summer: IPA for Singers, Vocal Production, and Sight Singing Toolkit. New this year is Yoga for Singers. Instructor bios will be posted on the Workshop bulletin board. Solo Voice Master Class Friday afternoon June 26 A voice master class will be conducted for a few workshop participants (perhaps 6-8). Individual singers will be selected for the master class during the voice hearings on the first day. If you want to be considered, bring a solo piece (2 copies) to sing for your voice hearing and mention your interest to the Chanticleer members in your hearing. (Singing for the voice hearing will be unaccompanied.) Quotes from past master classes: Wide range of constructive teaching techniques to help performers improve. Talent Show Friday evening, June 26 The workshop talent show is the perfect opportunity for new and old friends to band together for musical numbers, skits or readings OR for individuals to show off special or unusual talents (i.e., playing spoons, gymnastics). If you have ideas that require music, props or costumes, bring them along with you. You may sign up at any point until Friday s dinner on the participant sheet posted on the workshop bulletin board. The staff will host and organize the show, but the entertainment is up to you! Besides singing, previous years shows included poetry, instrumental music, skating, line dancing, and theater. Original Score Reading Saturday afternoon, June 27 Here s a new offering during Choice Time this year. Participants and Chanticleer members have a chance to sing their own original choral compositions in an informal small-group reading session. To contribute to this hour of sight-reading, bring multiple copies of legible scores your compositions (or other interesting choral works). Closing Concert Sunday, June 28 The workshop closes with a free concert for family and friends featuring workshop participants and Chanticleer. The concert begins at 4:00 pm at the Sonoma Country Day School at 4400 Day School Place in north Santa Rosa. Practice, practice, practice The directors expect you to learn the notes for your voice part in the tutti repertoire before arrival. This preparation is vital so that workshop sessions can provide advanced music-making experiences. Remember that you will receive more music to learn (for your small ensemble) on Wednesday evening. Be sure to bring a black three-ring binder for your music. On Campus Recreation/Swimming The SSU Recreation Center includes traditional fitness equipment, a rock-climbing wall, weight room, indoor track, billiards room, basketball and volleyball courts, massage service, and spa. Massage appointments require advanced sign-ups. Summer conference guests can purchase a guest pass for $9 a day. Weekdays 6:30 am 9:30 pm; Saturday & Sunday 12 pm -- 7 pm. Additionally, for $4 a day, guests can swim in the SSU pool. Summer hours for open lap swimming are 12-2 pm, everyday. Swimming is free in the residence hall pools at Beaujolais and Zinfandel.
