2 Display Suggestions Start with a white background and add the punch-outs from the front and back covers of this book. You may use the arrangement shown on the front cover or make another one of your choice. Then ask each student to trace his or her own star and label it with his or her name using red or blue construction paper and the pattern on page 3. Add these stars anywhere on the bulletin board. Copy the title on page 4 (it can be larger if your copy machine will take bigger paper, or trace the title using an overhead projector). Position the title in the center of the bulletin board. Border Suggestions Use the pattern on page 3. Follow the instructions to fold and cut a star-spangled border with a few quick snips of the scissors. Kids can help, too! Use long strips of plain red or blue paper to frame your board. Add narrow white stripes for a patriotic flair. Talking About the Bulletin Board Use the read-along story on page 7 as an introduction to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Add other information from additional resources, such as the ones listed on page 13. You may want to add information about their families and these interesting tidbits: George Washington had many boyhood adventures on a family farm known as River Farm. It was there he is said to have chopped down a cherry tree, and then he admitted it to his father because he could not tell a lie. How to Use This Book George Washington married a young widow, Martha Custis. Martha had two small children, Jackie and Patsy. They lived at Mount Vernon, where Washington was buried when he died in Abraham Lincoln s mother died from illness when he was about nine years old. His father remarried, and Abe loved his stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd, and they had four children: Robert, Edward, William and Thomas (Tad). Lincoln was assassinated while he was President in Before using the shape book page on page 5, explain that Abraham Lincoln frequently wore a tall hat, called a stovepipe hat. Discuss how that style got its name. Tell the students that sometimes President Lincoln stored important papers inside his hat! Laminate a few copies of the board game on pages Keep the gameboard available for groups of two to three students to play in their free time. 3 Fold a long strip of red or blue paper, accordion style as shown below. Your strip will need to be 5 1 /2" wide. Make the folds 2 3 /4" apart. Trace Shape A onto the folded strip and cut as directed. Repeat with more strips until you have enough borders to outline your entire board.
