5 Objectives: Poems, Poems, and More Poems Understanding different types of poetry such as haiku, tanka, cinquain, and limerick Counting syllables in words correctly Typing extemporaneously Centering and underlining title Accessing clip art from a CD-ROM Spell checking document Program Needed: Use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or AppleWorks (formerly known as ClarisWorks.) Have clip art accessible from a CD-ROM. Instructions: 1. Discuss with students different formats for poetry, such as the haiku, tanka, cinquain, and limerick. Explain to the students about counting the syllables. Show them each example of each type of format on the next few pages. (The students can pick one poem to do or make a poetry booklet containing many forms of poetry.) 2. Students will choose their poems and begin typing titles. Demonstrate how to center and underline the title. 3. Students will begin typing the bodies of their poems extemporaneously, keeping in mind the syllable and line structure. 4. Put students in pairs to check one another s poems for content and form. 5. Students can then find appropriate pictures to illustrate their poems from a CD-ROM or the Internet. 6. Each student s work should be spell-checked and printed. Extension Ideas: Poetry books make nice gifts for a parent or grandparent. Consider having each student choose a theme for his or her poetry book. Students may want to post some of their best poetry on the Internet or on the school Web site. 6 Haiku Poem Bustling Bees The bees are busy Finding petals to land on So they can get food. Haiku format Haiku is a form of unrhymed poetry that had its beginning in Japan. Haiku poetry usually describes something about nature or the seasons. Each poem is three lines and the number of syllables in each line follows this pattern: Line 1: five syllables Line 2: seven syllables Line 3: five syllables #2448 Computer Activities Through the Year 6 Teacher Created Resources, Inc.

7 Tanka Poem Icicles on the Trees The pine trees are tall Covered with snowflakes and ice Swaying in the wind Soon it will all sadly melt But it was a sight to see. Tanka format According to Asian tradition, if someone writes you a haiku, you are to write a tanka poem in return to them. It is a way of saying thank you. The tanka poem does not have to be on the same subject. 8 Objectives: If I Were in Charge of the World Using the Tab key Typing extemporaneously Spell checking document Learning how to word process in poetry format Program Needed: Use a basic word processing program such as Microsoft Word or AppleWorks. It would be helpful to have clip art available too. Instructions: 1. There is a popular poem by Judith Viorst entitled If I Were In Charge of the World. Find this poem in your school library and read it to the class. Discuss what it would be like to be in char ge of the world. Ask the students about things they would like to do if they were in char ge of the world. 2. Students will be writing their own poem entitled If I Were In Charge of the World. You may want to have younger students brainstorm on a piece of paper what they would do if they were in charge of the world. Older students should be able to type extemporaneously on the computer. 3. Demonstrate how to put their work in poetry format. Explain to students the meaning of the Tab keyand show them how to use it. Stress to students the Tab key should be used instead of the space bar key. Although a document may appear aligned on the monitor, when a person uses the space bar key to indent, often times the document will not print aligned. 4. Once students are finished typing, have them spell check. 5. Finally, proof and print. Extension Ideas: Students are infatuated with the idea of being in char ge. A teacher could change the title to ask students what they would do if in charge of the entire school. If you are studying a particular country, such as Argentina, change the title to If I Were In Charge of Argentina. 9 If I Were In Charge of the World If I were in charge of the world I d make weekends longer, Doctor appointments shorter, and Brussel sprouts obsolete. If I were in charge of the world People would be more friendly, School bus drivers would let us sing, and Parents would have a bedtime! If I were in charge of the world All pets would have an owner, People would think twice before they smoke, Moms would have help around the house, and Someone would find the cure for cancer. If I were in charge of the world Trash would be in garbage cans, Popcorn would be free at the movies. This world would be a much better place If I were in charge of the world.
