1 Saturday November 16 th, 2013 Will be the 12 th meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the League of World War I Aviation Historians. The meeting is at the National Air and Space Museum s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center On the Hangar Floor Level, Classroom 2a and2b

2 Schedule for Saturday November 16 th :00AM - Museum door opens Book exchange. At the upcoming meeting we are going to continue our book exchange. The idea is for attending members to go through their own collection and find books that they no longer want and exchange them for equal or lesser value. How does that work if you have a paperback you can exchange it for another paperback if you have a hardcover you can exchange it for a hardcover or paperback. The limit will be four (4) books per member to start. Special thanks to Frank Garove a member of the group has made a generous donation of nearly 100 aviation books. 10:15-10:30AM Meeting begins in Classroom 2a and 2b Nuts, Bolts, Stick and Fabric (the opening remarks and our short business meeting) 10:30-11:15AM Presentation by Jon Guttman, Historian and Author Frontline Freaks: The Salmson 1A3 and the SPAD A.2 Salmson's first production warplane was an attempt at a triplace reconnaissance plane with two propellers all powered by a single radial engine. It was imaginative, weird and cordially disliked by its crews, although a few made it as far as 1918 (until something anything better became available). The first attempt by Société Pour L'Aviation et ses Dérivés or SPAD was the unfortunate A series which fared little better, both pilot and observer loathed to be in a nose over situation, with 42 built for France and 57 for Russia it to saw extended frontline service.

3 11:30-12:00PM Presentation by Brian Nicklas, NASM Archives Department What is in the National Air and Space Museum Archives and how do I get to it? This presentation will be an overview of what type of material is handled in the NASM Archives Department, with examples cited from recent acquisitions and highlights from World War One era items/collections. 12:10-12:30PM Presentation by Chris Moore, Curator NASM Halberstadt CL.IV: Ground Attack Specialist Designed specifically as a ground attack aircraft by Halberstädter Flugzeugwerke it proved to be one of the most effective ground attack aircraft of World War I. This presentation will take place at the aircraft for this very personal look. 12:45-1:30PM Lunch at McDonalds or at McDonalds Café, or if you are inclined please brown-bag it. 1:30PM -2:00PM Member s Works in Progress, Show-N-Tell We have some interesting WIP s that will be shared at this meeting If you have something to share please do so this section of the meeting it is the perfect opportunity to share, request and exchange information, and some very good opportunities have come at this portion of the meeting.

4 2:00-2:30PM Presentation by Jon Barrett, Volunteer NASM Collection Department Whose Darn Fabric is This? Some recently conserved WWI aircraft fabric in the National Collection revealed some hitherto unknown and interesting facts. Parsing through the layers of documents and photographs revealed a fascinating story about the pilots, observers and their machines. 2:45PM - 3:30PM Presentation by Timothy Mulligan, Researching WW1 German Naval Aviation Records at the National Archives This presentation will discuss the nature and potential research use of German naval records, available on microfilm at the National Archives in College Park, MD, that document the operations of German naval airships and aircraft during World War I. There is no formal membership required to attend therefore if you know of anyone who is interested in this aspect of aviation history they are most welcome. There is no fee for attending the meeting, although there is a $15 parking fee at the museum, therefore consider carpooling.
