1 Running head: APA STYLE GUIDE 1 APA Style Guide APA Style is one of the several writing styles, established by the American Psychological Association for professionals in the field of humanities. To learn more about APA Style, use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed. available on APA website at APA Formatting Typed at 12 pt. Time New Roman font and double -spaced 1 margins on all sides Title page: Running head: TITLE OF PAPER Title page: Title, author name and institutional affiliation are located in the upper half of the title page All other pages: TITLE OF PAPER in the top left of every page Running head is no longer than 50 characters Page number on all pages, including the title page A sample of an APA- formatted title page is shown in Figure 1. 3 APA STYLE GUIDE 3 Citing References in Text In parenthesis, provide the author's last name, year, and page number. Quote Use quotation marks for quotes shorter than 40 words. Examples: 1. "Research has shown link between play and several areas of cognitive development" (Hendrick & Weissman, 2011, p. 50). 2. According to Hendrick and Weissman (2011), "research has shown link between play and several areas of cognitive development" (p. 50). If the quotation has 40 or more words, use a block quotation. Indent the block about half inch from the left margin. Double -space the entire quotation. Research shows connection between the language and the writing style. For instance, Japanese way of organizing ideas is very different from English one. The Japanese style of writing is often circular. This means that the topic comes at the end of the article. In fact, sometimes, the writer doesn't say what the topic is. Instead, the writer gives hints to help the reader guess the topic. (Boardman & Frydenberg, 2008, p. XVI) Paraphrase When paraphrasing, provide a page or a paragraph number to help the reader locate the relevant passage in the original text. Culturally-sensitive training in the ECE Program is crucial for effective professional identification of future daycare teachers. The make-up of today's college classroom reflects the ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity of modern Canada.. In the workforce, immigrants constitute approximately 20% of ECEs and ECAs in the Canadian daycare system. (Beach, Bertrand et al, 2004, p. 15)
