1 harvard university extension school star e112 Book Art I (23536) Spring 2011 Tuesdays 5:30 7:30pm 51 Brattle Street, Grossman Common Room Dr. Ilavenil Subbiah ta Kimberly Salley course description Book art is a medium of expression, like photography, oils, watercolour, digital art, or sculpture. It is a means of visual story-telling in which the simplest and the most complex ideas, concepts, and narratives are related using images and text. Artists books range from journals and collections of images to installations filling a room or hanging from the ceiling. This course teaches the basic techniques of book making. It explores content development and encourages challenging the conventional notion of a book the form it takes and how it is read and in so doing offers alternatives to how a story is told. We will cover simple book structures such as: Simple and complex accordions, non-adhesive covers Sewn accordion Pamphlet Side stab book Tibetan Prayer Book (Palm Leaf Book) We will cover simple image making techniques such as Xerox transfer and make stamped and decorated papers for endpapers and covers. Students will spend at least one hour a week outside of class meeting times preparing materials for each class. In addition, in past years, students found that they made a significant time investment in the assignments. 1 star e112 Book Art I Sp2011

Two (2) assignments are due through the semester; you will have three to four weeks to work on each of these. You must turn in a one-page written description of your work along with each assignment.
