In order to prepare for the year ahead, we are providing you with the following summer reading assignment. Please read all information carefully. Both Part 1 and Part 2 of the assignment must be submitted to turnitin.com. Assignments that are not submitted to turnitin.com by the deadline will not receive credit. If you do not have internet access at home, please use the public library. Part One Procedures: 1. Log on to the SIRS Researcher site: bin/hst- porta l-res? id=smd or Log on to the Opposing Viewpoints site: legroup.com/itweb/r ock34534 Please note that the websites can be accessed through the RHS home page and passwords are - the Media Center EDLINE page. 2. Skim several of the articles in the categories that interest you. Choose and read two sets of articles with opposing viewpoints. 3. Annotate the articles as you read either electronically or you may print and annotate hard copies. After you have considered your reading, choose one of the sets of articles. 4. Write a multi-paragraph essay that compares and contrasts the arguments of the two essays using the answers to the bulleted items below.

2 English 11 Summer Reading Assignment 1. Which of the articles resonates with you more strongly? 2. Do you agree with one more than the other? Do you see both sides? 3. How do the authors create their arguments? Do they use statistics? Anecdotes? Research? 4. What do they have in common? 5. Are they biased? Explain. 5. Submit your response to (see instructions under submit assignments). 6. Be prepared to discuss these articles when you return to school. You will be an expert on your chosen articles so it is important that you are ready to contribute thoughtfully to the discussion. We look forward to seeing you in August and hearing what you have to say about your topics. Part Two Summer reading is one way to help you develop your literacy skills, broaden your interests, and extend your background knowledge. You may use the resources to select books that are diverse in terms of challenge, ethnicity and culture, topics, classic and contemporary time periods, and genres. There is something here for everybody. This is also a good opportunity to become re-acquainted with the services available at your local M ontgome ry County Public Librarie s branch. Your library card and account allow you to access many services online. If you do not have a library card, here are e as y ins tructions for how to obtain one. Be sure to visit your local library to find books you will enjoy! Procedures: 1. Please read at least one title that interests and challenges you. 2. After reading, complete the following assignment: a) Identify the title of book, author, and genre (fiction, Science fiction, fantasy) b) Brief summary in your own words (do not give away the ending!) c) Recommendation: Would you recommend this book to others? Why or why not? Is there a particular group of people to whom you would recommend the book?

3 English 11 Summer Reading Assignment Example: I would recommend Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to anyone who loves fantasy or sci-fi literature. OR I would not recommend the Gossip Girl series to ANYONE because it is a puerile piece of writing filled with stereotypical, banal characters living a superficial existence. 3.
