2 Welcome to the Library! The library is not just a room full of books. It is a place to work and study and to find help with all aspects of the curriculum. This year, you can find me in the library Tuesday to Friday. Of course, I am here to help find resources that are in the library or on the library catalogue. However, I am also here to help efficiently find other sources of information, assist in using it effectively and demonstrate how to document your research. The following information in this handbook should get you started. If you have any questions, you can speak to me personally or me. Mr. Dobrenski (d.dobrenski@issh.ch) Online Databases and Passwords All of the following links can be found on Library Catalogue Encyclopedia Britannica www. 4 Academic Honesty As an IB World school we are committed to academic honesty. The student profile that serves as our umbrella of the IBO Programme also reminds us to be principled, well-balanced, knowledgeable, caring, open-minded, good communicators, and inquiring thinkers. To be Academically Honest is to: Cite your sources correctly when studying Give credit to other people s ideas, or words, or images or work downloaded from the internet Decline from allowing other people to use your work to cheat Use only materials approved by your teacher such as notes or documents during tests Tell the truth Do not copy other people s work Some useful definitions: Plagiarism: representing the ideas or work of another person as your own Collusion: allowing your work to be copied or submitted for assessment by another student Duplication of work: presenting the same work for different courses or assessments Malpractice: any behavior that results in or may result in gaining an unfair advantage in an assignment or assessment (for example taking unauthorized material into an exam, cheating, discussing the content of an examination paper) You can view the ISSH Academic Honesty Brochure here and the IBO Academic Honesty Policy here How to write a Bibliography A bibliography is a list of resources that you have used to write your essay or project. It goes on a separate page at the end of your assignment. all the sources whether it`s a website or a book are written together in alphabetical order by the author`s surname. If there is no author, then it goes by the title. Generally, MLA citations follow the below format. Contributor. Title. Secondary Contributors. Publication Information. Medium The main contributors to the source, normally the author, are placed before the title. If there is more than one author, then arrange the authors in the same order found in the source. Reverse only the name of the first author, and follow the rest in normal form. For example: One author Smith, John K. Title. Two authors Smith, John K., and Tim Sampson. Title. 4
