11 MLA Works Cited Guidelines To prepare a works cited page for your research, follow these guidelines: 1) Double space each entry and between entries. 2) List entries in alphabetical order according to the last name of the author. If there is no author, use the first word. However, ignore articles, (a, an, and the), when alphabetizing your citation. 3) Begin the first line of an entry blocked on the left and indent successive lines five spaces. 4) Underline titles of books, plays, periodicals, pamphlets, films, sound recordings, and television programs. 5) Use quotation marks to indicate titles of shorter works that appear in larger works, i.e. magazine article titles in a magazine, individual poems in a book of poetry, etc. 6) When appropriate, use shortened forms of the publisher s name, i.e. Random instead of Random House. 7) Use lower case abbreviation, such as vol. for volume. 8) European notation is used for the date, listing day, month, and year. 6 February ) There is no p or page notation, as the numbers are understood to be page numbers.
