Adonis has long been on the shortlist for the Nobel Prize which only one Arabic writer the novelist Mahfouz has won. This copy inscribed "for Leslie from his old pal 'Ashes' /Love etc. May 14, 1975 (the month of publication). This book was the frst of Ashbery's collections to win a major award: indeed it won the trifecta in 1976 with the NBCC, NBA and The Pulitzer. In 1985 he was awarded a MacArthur Foundation fellowship. May 8th, 1971 was the opening night for the frst showing of Jess's work other than on the West Coast. One of 1000 copies in wrappers (there was a signed edition in cloth of 100). Near fne copy; very scarce signed. [11798] $ Poet at work drafts of single poem 30. Dunn, Stephen. "Whereas the Animal I Cannot Help but Be" N.p.: unpublished, First Edition. Corrected drafts of a poem on eight 8 1/2 x 11 in. sheets with a brief, signed, accompanying cover letter to Dan Halpern. Photocopies of typed poems (in various versions) with ink corrections. Poet/editor Halpern asked fellow poets to send him drafts of a poem for an auction to support the National Poetry Series (Halpern is the Founder/Director of the series). The poem originally entitled "In The Dark" without stanzas, later "Deceptions", becomes a six stanza poem in the fnal version. Some of the images from the initial version remain and the central idea of "needed to be found out" remains to the end, but the poem is thoroughly reworked. An excellent and rare glimpse of a major

10 poet at work. The poem was eventually published in the Feb., 9, 2015 issue of The New Yorker in the "fnal version". A few leaves with creasing, one with stains, but still very good. First issue, Binding A: bronzed brown pebbled cloth; small 8vo. 50 pp. Likely fewer than 350 copies were bound from the original 1000 sheets of Frost's frst published book. A virtually pristine copy, minute wear to head and crown, top edges unopened (thus never read). In a custom collector's slipcase with calf spine, raised bands and bright gilt in near fne condition, with hinged folder to house the book. Crane A2. The frst US edition was not published until April [13097] $10, ANOTHER COPY. First issue, Binding B: cream vellum-paper boards stamped in red; 50 pp. One of 350 or fewer copies of the frst issue were published by the publisher before bankruptcy in 1921; binding B - what remained of the frst issue were bound circa 1917 during the war. The rest of the 1000 sheets had a complicated history and very different bindings. Crane A2B. THE WOMAN IN THE PARAGRAPH. Salem, MA: Cat Island Press, Crisp elegant work, stitched into crisp wraps -- early printing work of Dan Carr with title border cut in pearwood and printed from the block by Julia Ferrarie (the two would later form the fne printing house Four Zoas). Number 131 of 150. Fine. [9777] $ Ginsberg, Allen. "Guru" Pittsburg, KS: Little Balkans Press, First Separate Printing. Illustrated broadside 7 x 11 1/2 inches; letterpress printed on heavy purple paper, in a printed folder cut from a manila envelope.one of only ten copies; none were distributed. The verso stamped with the press address, hand-numbered and signed by printer Rob Freund and Gene DeGruson, founding editor of Little Balkans Review. Printed for an appearance by Ginsberg at Kansas State College on October 18, 1972, but never distributed. This is the only separate printing of the poem originally published in PLANET NEWS, and an exceptionally small printing. Fine copy and an about fne folder. NY: Gotham Book Mart, circa First edition, second issue, unauthorized. 2 leaves, printed on rectos only in purple ink: [1] title,

15 [2] dedication to Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Neal Cassady and Lucien Carr. The Title page signed by Allen Ginsberg, with the signature and a note by Marthe Rexroth: "I cranked the ditto master at S F State the frst time around -and! was at the reading". On the verso of the title, Michael McClure has written a lengthy note: "This frst long poem of Allen's was read at the Six Gallery in San Francisco in October I was 22 years old and gave my frst reading... On the dedication page are the signatures of Philip Lamantia, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and an inscription by David Meltzer: "When Allen frst read Kaddish in SF, I read too. I was 22." Promoted (though promotion in this case was a 100 postcards and posters at bars around North Beach including the offer of free admission, the hat passed for the wine - a "Charming event.") as "6 Poets at 6 Gallery", fve poets read: McClure, Whalen, and Lamantia, with Snyder reading from MYTHS & TEXTS last following AG's frst reading in public of HOWL. Kenneth Rexroth was the sixth, the elder acting as m.c. In the audience was Jack Kerouac who by has own account in THE DHARMA BUMS and by others was quite drunk. Ferlinghetti the next day sent AG a telegram: " I greet you at the beginning of a great career. When do I get the manuscript?" He published in 1956, and was greeted not long after with obscenity charges from which he and his store manager ShIg Murao were acquitted in October This second issue was produced without Ginsberg's permission by Gotham Book Mart using the original ditto master obtained when they were appraising the poet's papers. The project was aborted, Ginsberg told according to his bibliographer that most copies were destroyed and none sold. Copies are known to exist with and without a Gotham Book Mart stamp. Without the stamp it is very diffcult to distinguish it from the original. The late Peter Howard of Serendipity acquired four sets (17 pages each printed on one side) of unstapled, unstamped, sheets in 1995 and had them signed and in some cases inscribed. Ginsberg was given one, three other complete sets were offered for sale. The present offering (title and

16 dedication sheets only) with signatures clearly done at the same time, although The Lamantia signature is not on all the sets and presumably was added later. This item purchased via another dealer who bought this directly from Mr. Howard a decade or more ago. Needless to say rare, and a wonderful addition indeed cornerstone to any Beat collection. Title sheet corner with fold, all else very good, attractively mounted and framed. The frst edition in either issue is rare. The frst printing of HOWL typed by Robert Creeley run off by Marthe Rexroth on a mimeograph machine at S F State was reportedly only 25 copies, and sent to the friends of the poet about three months prior to the City Lights edition. No copies located on WorldCat. We know of three copies at auction: Christie's, 2013, with a Peter Howard provenance consistent with the signatures on the present offering (minus Lamantia's signature, and possibly second issue?) sold for $118,750; Bonham's, 2012, inscribed by Ginsberg sold for $74,500. The Robert Duncan copy auctioned in The only copy located on WorldCat for the second issue (and clearly identifed as such)

A handsomely produced magazine for children aged 5-8, which lasted for somewhat over 20 years, and had some distinguished contributors. This issue with possibly Richard P. Wilbur's frst contribution in a magazine at age 8. The poet (in 2013) has signed at his contribution the poem "Puppy" on page 50. In a 1977 Paris Review interview he is quoted: "I began writing poetry as a small child, and became a hired poet at the age of eight when my frst poem was published in John Martin's Magazine. As I remember it, it was a horrible little poem about nightingales, which I never could have seen or heard as an American child." It is possible that "Puppy" is a second contribution, though as likely that the poet misremembers. At any rate a scarce magazine and certainly rare
