1 MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (M.Phil.) in ENGLISH SYLLABUS (from the academic year onwards) Department of English SRI CHANDRASEKHARENDRA SARASWATHI VISWA MAHAVIDHYALAYA Enathur, Kanchipuram
2 REGULATIONS Eligibility Criteria for M.Phil., Admission A Candidate with at least 55% marks in M.A. English Degree with / pattern from this university or any other recognized university approved by the University Grants Commission is eligible for admission. There shall be a relaxation of 5% for SC/ST candidates for admission. Duration of the Programme The Duration of the programme is one academic year for full-time candidates and one and half year for part-time candidates. A period of six months (a semester) will be given for part-time students to submit their dissertation. Admission Procedure and Attendance Admission to M.Phil., full-time and part-time programme will be made on merit on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination and the entrance examination conducted by the Department of English. 80% of Attendance is mandatory for the programme failing which the candidate has to redo the programme on paying the fee prescribed by the university. Compulsory Papers The following courses are compulsory for M.Phil. (FT/PT) candidates: i. Research Methodology ii. Literary Theory and Criticism. Specialisation Papers A Candidate has to choose one of the following specialization papers: i. Indian English Literature ii. English Language Teaching iii. Indian Literature in English Translation iv. Twentieth Century English Literature v. Twentieth Century American Literature Scheme of Examination A candidate for M.Phil in English has to take three written examinations. Each examination will be for 100 marks which will be converted to 60%. Internal Assessment will be for 40%. In order to pass the Programme, a candidate has to secure 20/40 in Internal Assessment and 30/60 from External Valuation. The latter indicates that it should be 50/100 in External Valuation. In total, securing 50% in each course (internal and external taken together) and in Dissertation and Viva Voce is mandatory for a pass in the programme. Maximum Marks for each course is 100 and the total of all courses is 500.
3 Declaration of Pass Candidates who secure more than 75% marks in the examination will be declared as First Class with Distinction. Between 60% - 74% as First Class and between 50%-59% as Second Class. Credit System Credits distributed to the components of the courses are given below: i. Research Methodology 05 Credits ii. Literary Theory & Criticism 05 Credits iii. Specialisation paper 05 Credits iv. Dissertation & Viva Voce 15 Credits Question Paper Pattern There shall be Two Sections A & B in the Question paper. Section A shall contain 12 questions out of which the candidate has to answer Eight in about 100 words each. Each question is for 5 marks totaling 40 (8x5=40). Section B shall contain Three questions in either/or pattern. Each question shall carry 20 marks totaling 60 (3x20=60). M.Phil. UNIT-V: Format of Reporting Empirical Research Introduction purpose of the study, background and significance of the Study, hypotheses (if any), definition of terms, limitations of the study, basic assumptions (if any), procedures for collecting and analyzing the data. Review of Literature (only of relevant studies) Methods and procedures-subjects/participants, instrument(s) used, pilot study and its results (if any), data collection, analysis of data (statistical analysis). Findings of the study (results of data analysis) Conclusions and recommendations Appendices Bibliography
