2 CALDECOTT MEDAL AND CALDECOTT HONOR Allsburg, C. (1981) Jumanji. Boston, Massachusetts: Houghton Mifflin. A 1982 Caldecott Medal winner, Jumanji takes readers into the dangers of the jungle. Judy and Peter are bored at home and decide to head out to the park. While at the park they find a board game and decide to take it home to play it. Little do they know what is about to occur with every roll of the die. There is no quitting now because someone must win in order for the game to end. Bang, M. (1983). Ten, nine, eight. New York: Scholastic Inc. Caldecott Honor Book in 1984, this book is an excellent bedtime story where a little girl has just come out of the shower and is about to be put to bed by her father. As part of her bedtime routine, together, father and daughter count backwards until she grows sleepy and tired. She is finally ready for bed. The outstanding colors and rhyming story captivate the readers as they prepare to get tucked in bed. Bang, M. (1999). When Sophie gets angry--really, really angry. New York: Blue Sky Press. This 2000 Caldecott Honor Book is about a little girl named Sophie who has a difficult time dealing with anger. In this story, Sophie gets extremely angry when her sister takes the gorilla she was playing with. Not knowing how to cope with her anger, Sophie runs outside and climbs a tree. She doesn t come back in until she has calmed herself down. Filled with bright colors, that portray Sophie s feelings, this book is sure to captivate readers. Brown, M. (1961). Once a mouse- -: A fable cut in wood. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. Caldecott Medal Winner in 1962, this book contains powerful woodcut illustrations to tell an ancient Indian fable about a hermit who saves a small mouse from danger. This is accomplished by turning the mouse into bigger and powerful animals. By the end of the story, the mouse is now a tiger and the hermit realizes he has made a mistake. He turns him back into a mouse and is never seen again. Henkes, K. (2004). Kitten's first full moon. New York: Greenwillow Books. With white, black and various grey tones, this 2005 Caldecott Medal winner creates the perfect night for Kitten. Utilizing these dark tones, Henkes creates the perfect mood for the full moon setting. In this story, Kitten ventures out into the night in search of the bowl of milk she sees in the sky. After being unsuccessful, she returns home only to find a real bowl of milk waiting or her on the front steps. Henkes, K. (1993). Owen. New York: Greenwillow Books. Giving up something we love is not always easy. In this 1994 Caldecott Honor Book, Owen is asked to give up his fuzzy yellow blanket when he starts school. He loves his blanket and is not easily convinced he is too old for it. Finally his mother, converts it into handkerchiefs he can take everywhere he goes. The use of watercolors and ink illustrations make it a heartwarming book. Keats, E. J. (1962). The snowy day. New York: Viking Press. One day Peter wakes up and realizes snow has fallen during the night. He decides to go out into the snow and has a wonderful fun day filled with adventures. In this Caldecott Medal from 1963, Keats watercolor illustrations jump out providing an attractive scenery as young readers follow Peter out into the snow. Lionni, L. (1960). Inch by inch. New York: I. Obolensky. In this 1961 Caldecott Honor Book, children learn about measuring. As inchworms is about to be eaten by a hungry robin, he says he can be useful in measuring things. From then on, the inchworm is measuring birds until he is asked to measure a nightingale s song or else be eaten. As inchworm measures the song, he escapes to safety. Lionni s simple tale and lovely selection of shapes and colors, is appropriate for young readers. Mosel, A., & Lent, B. (1972). The funny little woman. New York: E.P. Dutton and Co. A funny little woman chases her dumpling down into a hole. Soon, she is cooking rice with a magic paddle at the request of a wicked oni. She finally escapes taking with her the magic paddle and becoming the richest woman in Japan selling her rice dumplings. Wonderful and creative illustrations in this 1973 Caldecott Medal winner provide an insight to the underworld and the woman s home. Selznick, B. (2007). The invention of Hugo Cabret: A novel in words and pictures. New York, New Y ork: Scholastic Press Caldecott Medal winner, portrays Hugo who lives in the Paris train station. Homeless and stealing to stay alive, Hugo must continue to live a quiet life until he meets a girl. When his secret life is almost revealed he receives a hidden message from his father. Beautiful charcoal illustrations make this novel an interesting selection.

The CSK Award in 2002, this book talks about the painful segregation lived in the 1950s. Through Pinkey s use of lines and pastel colors readers learn the love through amazing art. Thomas, J. C., &Cooper, F. (2008). The blacker the berry: Poems. New York: HarperCollins. Collier, B. (2000). Uptown. New York: Henry Holt. This 2001 CSK Award winning book told by a young African American boy gives readers a brief look into his community through powerful watercolor and collage illustrations. He talks about his neighborhood, Harlem, New York. Through his descriptions he attempts to persuade readers, Harlem is the best place to be. Feelings, T., & Angelou, M. (1993). Soul looks back in wonder. New York: Dial Books. A collection of poems written by 13 well-known poets tell about African heritage. This 1994 Coretta Scott King Award winner book contains colorful illustrations filled with rich colors. The use of texture and cut outs appeal to readers while reminding them about their culture. Feels hopes this book will help young readers see their inner beauty through these powerful poems. Johnson, J. W., & Ransome, J. (1994). The Creation. New York: Holiday House. This 1995 Coretta Scott King Award winner is a collection of poems based from the first book of the Bible, Genesis. The bold illustrations do most of the storytelling. Without the illustrations, readers would have a secret Olivia told me. East Orange, NJ: Just Us Books. This 2008 CSK Honor book talks about what happens when Olivia reveals her secret to her best friend. The use of black and white colors allow readers to focus on the red balloon on the background. As the secret is shared by Olivia s best friend, the balloon grows bigger and bigger each time. At the end, Olivia, her best friend and the readers learn a valuable lesson about sharing secrets. Meyers, W., & Meyers, C. (1998). Harlem. New York: Scholastic Inc. A 1998 CSK Honor book, through a poem it tells about Harlem. Throughout the poem readers learn about important landmarks and get a deeper understanding of African American experiences. It tells about how Harlem is a gathering place for African Americans, where children play in the streets. The dark use of colors and paper collage art gives readers a more in depth insight to Harlem s history. McKissack, P., & Pinkney, J. (2001). Goin' someplace special. New York: Atheneum sad story of a little girl as she travels to her someplace special. Tricia Ann begs her Mama to allow her to go to the public library. Once in the bus, Tricia faces discrimination because of the color of her skin. She often reminds herself what her grandmother once told her, You are somebody, a human being-no better, no worse than anybody in this world. McKissack, P., & Pinkney, J. (1988). Mirandy and Brother Wind. New York: Alfred A. Knopf Inc. This story is about Mirandy who needs a partner r for the junior cakewalk. Her grandmother tells her that if she is able to capture Brother Wind, he will grant her a wish. As she sets out to capture him, readers clearly see Wind as a real life character. Winner of the Coretta Scott King Award in 1989 this book captivates readers with full page water color illustrations. Steptoe, J. (1997). In daddy's arms I am tall: African Americans celebrating fathers. New York: L ee & Low Books. This CSK Award winner from 1998 is a collection of 12 amazing poems celebrating African American fathers. Fathers and grandfathers love is captured through each of the poems. These poets share their bonds and allow readers to experience what a real life hero is. The illustrations are eye catching adding meaning to each This book contains a collection of 13 powerful poems that send a strong message about different skin colors. Readers will learn that every skin color is unique no one should feel ashamed because of their skin, eye or hair color. Cooper s illustrations and choice of color and painting techniques depict innocence and pureness in the children bringing each poem to life. Yarbrough, C., & Byard, C. M. (1979). Cornrows. New York: Coward, McCann & Geoghegan. Shirley Ann and her brother Mike spend the day with their mother and great grandmother. As these ladies braid their hair, the children listen to the history of cornrows. They learn that cornrows are not simply braids. They have meaning and are symbols passed down to them from their ancestors. The charcoal designs enhance the illustrations in this 1980 Coretta Scott King Award winner.
4 Geisel Award Beaumont, K., & Dyer, J. (2006). Move over, Rover. Orlando: Harcourt. This 2007 Geisel Honor book, is about a dog named Rover who feels sad and lonely in his doghouse. All of a sudden, it starts raining cats and dogs, and different intruders squeeze in his home making him feel too crowded. After smelling a skunk, the animals quickly leave the doghouse. Rover is now glad to have his home all to himself. The water color and acrylic illustrations captivate the readers. Grant, J., & Truesdell, S. (2008). Chicken said, "Cluck!". New York: HarperCollins. Earl and Pearl set out to plant pumpkin seeds but chicken keeps getting in their way. The children shoo the chicken away, but soon realize they may need her after all. Chicken is willing to help after a group of grasshoppers arrive at the pumpkin patch. In this 2009 Geisel Honor book, Grant uses simple wording and silly pen ink drawings that are sure to be enjoyed by young readers. Kang, A., & Weyant, C. (2014). You are (not) small. New York: Two Lions. When two fuzzy creators meet each other they start discussing their size. The big bear says to the little bear you are small. The little bear says I am not small. You are big. Suddenly other bigger and smaller creatures appear and the bears agree that they are neither the smallest or biggest animals. The use of simple text and bold illustrations make this 2015 Geisel Medal winner a perfect G selection for young readers. Litwin, E., & Dean, J. (2012). Pete the cat and his four groovy buttons. New York, NY: Harper. This 2013 Geisel Honor book is about Pete the Cat wearing his favorite shirt with four groovy buttons. One by one the buttons come loose until he is left with none. Not once is he concerned about this situation. He continues singing throughout the book. The combination of words and song along with colorful illustrations will keep the young readers excite about this book. Silverman, E., & Lewin, B. (2005). Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa. Orlando: Harcourt This 2006 Geisel Honor book is about a young girl named Kate and her best friend, a talking horse, named Cocoa. Kate is an exemplary cowgirl who not only rides Cocoa, but she also cleans the stalls. Water color illustrations fill this ranch setting book and create a warm mood that tells about an amazing friendship. Pizzoli, G. (2013). The watermelon seed. New York: Disney Hyperion Geisel Award book, this book introduces readers to a funny crocodile that has eaten watermelon all his life. He loves it until, one day he accidentally swallows a seed. What will happen to him now? Will a watermelon grow inside his stomach? He ends up burping out the seed and promising not to ever eat watermelon again or will he? Pizzoli s illustrations have colors that relate well to the story. Willems, M. (2008). Are you ready to play outside?. New York: Hyperion Books for Children. Containing cartoon-style illustrations, this 2009 Geisel Award book starts with Gerald and Piggie about to have a fun day outside. Suddenly a raindrop lands on Piggie head and becomes upset. Then they both see a couple of worms having fun in the rain and they decide to do the same. After the rain stops, Piggie is once again upset. Gerald tries making his friend happy again by splatting water on him. Willems, M. (2011). I broke my trunk!. New York: Hyperion Books for Children. Gerald has broken his trunk and his best friend Piggie demands to know how. Gerald tells make-believe stories about how he broke his trunk, but Piggie doesn t believe a single word. At the end Gerald tells the truth. The use of Willem s word repetition inspire the beginner reader to want to read. This was a Geisel Beginning Reader Honor book in Willems, M. (2007). There is a bird on your head!. New York: Hyperion Books for Children. A 2008 Geisel Medal winner, this book is about Gerald having a bird on his head. When Piggie checks, he says there are actually two birds, a nest, and three eggs. The eggs hatch and now there is family living on his head. He politely asks them to leave, but they move on to Piggie s head. Minimal words and simple illustrations will keep the beginner reader engaged. Willems, M. (2010). We are in a book!. New York, N.Y: Hyperion. This story allows the readers to interact with the book s characters Gerald and Piggie. They know someone (the reader) is watching them and encourage the reader not to stop reading. At first Gerald is a bit uncomfortable, but then opens up and both characters ask to have the book read again. This books received the Geisel Honor in 2011.
5 NYT BESTSELLERS LIST Daywalt, D., & Jeffers, O. (2013). The day the crayons quit. New York: Philomel Books. Duncan wants to color, but in his crayon box are only letters from his crayons. The crayons inform Duncan how they feel about how they are used. Red crayon has to work all the holidays, black is only used for outlining, and blue is exhausted of coloring all the water. After reading the concerns, Duncan creates a picture using all the crayons. Perfect story for children who enjoy coloring. Colorful illustrations support the story s plot. Kann, V. (2015). Aqualicious. New York: Harper Collins Publishers. Pinkalicious is having a fun day at the beach with her family. The day gets even more interesting after she discovers a tiny mermaid named Aqua. Aqua explains she is a merminnie who needs help finding her way back home. Pinkalicious and her brother are willing to help her. The children are not successful until, their parents take them to the aquarium which turns out to be Aqua s home. Brilliant colors fill these pages making it another best seller. Novak. B.J. (2014). The book with no pictures. New York: Dial books for Young Readers. Although this book has no pictures, children will enjoy it because it allows the reader to become part of the story. As the book begins, it states that the reader has to read every single word no matter what. Readers find themselves saying silly things like I am a monkey who taught myself to read. Very entertaining to children because of Novak s style of word play Rubin, A., & Salmieri, D. (2012). Dragons love tacos. New York: Dial Books for Young Readers. Dragons love all kinds of tacos. Unfortunately where there are tacos, there is always hot and spicy salsa. Dragons hate it! Without knowing they accidentally eat tacos containing hot salsa and burn down the house with blazing fire. It s a hilarious book that will be enjoyed by everyone, especially taco lovers. Santat, D. (2014). The adventures of Beeckle; the unimaginary friend. New York: Little, Brown & Co. Beeckle was born in an island where imaginary friends are created. He spends endless nights waiting to be chosen by someone special. When his turn never comes, he sets out into the real world in search of a special friend. There he finds a real friend and they decide to travel back to an imaginary world. Santat s theme on imaginary friends is probably familiar to many of us and therefore is much enjoyed by everyone. Tulet, H., Franceschelli, C. (2011). Press Here. San Francisco, CA.: Chronicle Books. An interactive and magical book that allows children to follow directions and become part of the story. The readers will find themselves pressing the yellow dot, shaking the book and even blowing at the dots. This continues throughout the book until they arrive at the same place they started. Children can assimilate this game to playing on a tablet and therefore they are eager to follow and complete the different requests. Willems, M. (2015). I will take a nap!. New York: Hyperion Books for Children. Gerald is feeling cranky and decides to take a nap. As he is getting ready for his nap, Piggie shows up. When Piggie decides to join him, Gerald is distracted by the snorting. Finally, Gerald falls asleep and dreams of Piggie. Not even in his dreams, he can be away from Piggie. After his nap he feels much better. Willems. M. (2014). My new friend is so fun!. New York: Hyperion Books for Children. Piggie is spending the day with her new friend Bryan Bat. Gerald is happy at first, but then becomes worried that his friend is having way too much fun without him. Gerald and Snake, who is Bat s friend, imagine being replaced and losing their friends. In the end, they both realize, their friends were thinking about them and will never replace them. This bestseller is excellent for those of us afraid of sharing our friends. Willems, M. (2014). The pigeon needs a bath!. New York: Hyperion Books for Children. Pigeon needs a bath immediately, but he is not too convinced about that. He might have taken a shower just last month. He is so stinky not even the flies want anything to do with him. After a lot of convincing, he finally decides to take a bath. To his surprise, he loves it and now doesn t want to get out! Willem s excellent description of a bath time routine is way too familiar to many parents and children making a bestseller book. Willems. M. (2014). Waiting is not easy!. New York: Hyperion Books for Children. This time Piggie has a surprise for Gerald but she tells him he has to wait to see it. Gerald is not happy about this. He is not patient and wants to know what the surprise is already. Piggie reminds him he must wait and Gerald is upset. Either way, he ends up waiting for the surprise all day long. The beautiful stars at night were worth waiting for. Sometimes the wait is worth when it comes to surprises. Willems lesson on anticipation makes this best seller.
6 Pura Belpré Award Johnston, T., Morales, Y., & O'Meara, T. (2009). My abuelita. Orlando, Fla: Harcourt Children's Books. The story begins with a little boy telling us he lives with his grandmother, Abuelita. Throughout the book, the boy describes their routine as they prepare to leave to Abuelitas workplace. Not until the very end are readers able to find out what Abuelita s job is. She is a children s storyteller. The 3-D effect Moreales creates with the illustrations is significant t in telling the story. This was a Pura Belpré - Illustrator Honor book in Montes, M., & Morales, Y. (2006). Los gatos black on Halloween. New York: Henry Holt and Company. This book tells a story about brujas, monstruos and other scary creatures of the night on their way to a Halloween party. They are having a great time until, they are interrupted by their worst fear: humans! Knocking at their door with bags on their hands, the children yell trick or treat The eerie illustrations create the perfect scenery to this Halloween story.. Pura Belprѐ - Author Honor in 2008 and Pura Belpré - Illustrator Award in Morales, Y. (2013). Niño wrestles the world. New York: Roaring Brook Press. Niño is a lucha libre champion. He defeats, la momia de Guanajuato among others. He tackles everysingle one of his opponents into victory. He is having a blast until, his real life opponents, las hermanitas, wake up from their nap. Unable to defeat them, he joins them instead. Vivid colors throughout make this Niño a charming wrestler. This book receive the Pura Belpré Illustrator Award in Soto, G., & Guevara, S. (2000). Chato and the party animals. New York: Putnam. Chato loves to party and when he finds out that his carnal, Novio Boy hasn t had a birthday party, he sets out to plan a surprise party for him. He orders a special cake and invites everyone he knows. The pachanga lasts well until sun down, and Novio Boy is happy to have the coolest carnal of the barrio. The bold colorful paintings of the animals are amazing and represent the character s moods well. This book received the Pura Belpré - Illustrator Award in Soto, G., & Guevara, S. (1995). Chato's kitchen. New York: Putnam's. Chato, a low-riding cat, is excited to find out that his new neighbors are a family of fat, jucy ratoncitos. He invites his new neighbors to a delicious family dinner. While in the kitchen, Chato prepares meals that go well with mice. The end not what the reader expected because, Chato and the ratoncitos end up having a fajita dinner joined by Chorizo, a low sscrapping dog. The use of dark urban colors help set the barrio theme. This book received the Pura Belpré - Illustrator Award in Tafolla, C., Coŕdova, A. (2010). Fiesta babies. Berkeley: Tricycle Press. Cute and adorable babies take part in a fiesta. The Fiesta Babies spend their day having fun eating, dancing and singing. After a fun filled day, the babies are tired and take a siesta. The use of vibrant colors and illustrations capture this Mexican fiesta well. Pura Belpré -Illustrator Honor book in Tafolla, C., & Coŕdova, A. (2008). What can you do with a rebozo?. Berkeley, CA: Tricycle Press. A Mexican little girl explains the many uses of a rebozo, a Mexican shawl. She enjoys spending her days creating new uses for the rebozo. It can be used to enhance a Sunday dress, used to braid in her hair, or a cozy cradle for the baby. The rebozo s uses are endless. The detailed illustrations and vibrant colors allow the readers to truly experience using a rebozo. This book won the Pura Belpré - Illustrator Honor award in Tonatiuh, D., (2010). Dear primo: A letter to my cousin. New York: Abrams Books for Young Readers. This is a story about two cousins who write letters to each other because they live in different countries. Charlie lives in America and Carlitos lives in Mexico. Although the cousins way of life is a little different, at the end of the day, they realize that they have a lot more in common than what they thought. Tonatiuh s selection of colors throughout the book shows the warmness of both boys. Pura Belprѐ- Illustrator Honor book in Tonatiuh, D. (2013). Pancho Rabbit and the coyote: A migrant's tale. New York: Abrams Books for Young Readers. Pancho Rabbit lives in a farm with his family. One day Pancho s dad leaves to find work up north and does not return. After two years, Pancho decides to go in search of him taking along Papa s favorite food. Along the way he meets a coyote who offers to help him. In return, Pancho has to share his Papa s food with him. After successfully finding his dad, they return home. Tonatiuh s story portrays the daily struggles of undocumented families coming to America to have a better life. Pura Belprѐ-Author Honor book in 2014 and Pura Belpré- Illustrator Honor in Vamos, S., & Loṕez, R. (2011). The cazuela that the farm maiden stirred. Watertown, MA: Charlesbridge. In this story a farm maiden stirs a cazuela or pot to make a delicious treat. She is able to accomplish this with the assistance of the farm animals. Each animal provides an ingredient needed to make the wonderful arroz con leche. After enjoying the tasty arroz con leche everyone thanks the cazuela. Included in the book is the recipe for arroz con leche. The bright colored illustrations are sure to delight readers. Pura Belpré - Illustrator Honor book in 2012.
