(AC) 700 1# Wood, Sophie (AC) 700 1# Monk, Ian (AC) 700 1# Clegg, Elizabeth (AC) 700 1# Waldman, Guido (AC) Notes/Specific Rules Used in #1: General Assumption Made: Complete text is in English. 100 field: 1. Author main entry. Would need to determine if this is the authorized form of name.
Rebecca Wedl Exam Part 2 Libr. 248 Dr. Karpuk p field: 1. Uniform title to bring various forms of title together. Comes under authority control A. Base the decision whether to use a uniform title in a particular instance on one or more of the following 2) how many manifestations of the work are involved 5) whether the work was originally in another language 6) extent to which the catalog is used for research purposes A. Enclose the uniform title in square brackets (unless work is entered under title or uniform title is main entry heading). However, samples in MARC manuals do not show brackets. No brackets in MARC? C1. If the linguistic content of the item being cataloged is different from that of the original (e.g. a translation ), add the name of the language of the item to the uniform title. Precede the language by a full stop. 5. A.3A1. Capitalize an individual uniform title as instructed in A field: D3. Transcribe an original title in a language different from that of the title proper appearing in the chief source of information as a parallel title if the item contains all or some of the text in the original language, or if the original title appears before the title proper in the chief source of information. Transcribe as other title information an original title in the same language as the title proper. In all other cases, give the original title in a note. (Criteria for parallel title, other title information not met in this case. Assumption made that all text is in English.) F1. Transcribe statements of responsibility appearing prominently on the item in the form in which they appear there (The word Notes remains capitalized.) F5. If a single statement of responsibility names more than three persons performing the same function, or with the same degree of responsibility, omit all but the first of each group of such persons F6. If there is more than one statement of responsibility, transcribe them in the order indicated by their sequence on the chief source of information 5. A.4A1. Capitalize the first word of a title Capitalize other words as instructed in the rules for the language involved. 260 field: C5. If two or more places in which a publisher, distributor, etc. has offices are named in the item, give the first named place D1. Give the name of the publisher, distributor, etc. following the place(s) to which it relates D2. Give the name of the publisher, distributor, etc. in the shortest form in which it can be understood and identified internationally.
Rebecca Wedl Exam Part 2 Libr. 248 Dr. Karpuk p D4. If an item has two or more publishers, distributors, etc. describe it in terms of the first named and the corresponding place(s). In the following cases, add subsequently named publishers (None met criteria of a-d). 300 field: A1. Precede other physical details by a colon. Precede dimensions by a semicolon D1. Give the height of an item in centimeters, to the next whole centimeter up. 500 field: B9. Make notes on publication, distribution, etc. details that are not included in the publication, distribution, etc. are and are considered to be important. First published information included because prescribed by Rule 1.1D3 and this information puts uniform title in context. Additional publication, distribution information doesn t seem necessary for second-level description A.3. Form of Notes: Quotations. Give quotations from the item in quotation marks. 3. A.10. Capitalize the first word in each note 4. Additional contributors prominently listed on title page; this indicates they likely are important. Listed their names in a note, thus can provide 700 access points for each of these individuals A1. Separate introductory wording from the main content of a note by a colon followed but not preceded by a space. 700 field: 1. Added entry personal name. 2. Need to determine authorized forms of names D1. Optional addition. Designations of function. (Translator function designated by tr.)
Rebecca Wedl Exam Part 2 Libr. 248 Dr. Karpuk p. 4 Item #2: Courtesan s Jewel Box 010 ## 020 ## 100 ## The courtesan s jewel box : $b Chinese stories of the Xth-XVIIth centuries / $c translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang 246 2# Courtesan s jewelbox Chinese stories of the Xth-XVIIth centuries 246 2# Chinese stories of the 10 th - 17 th centuries 246 2# Chinese stories of the tenth to seventeenth centuries 250 ## 1 st ed. 260 ## Beijing : $b Foreign Languages Press, $c ## Foreign Languages Press $a 24 Baiwanzhuang Rd. $b Beijing $d China 300 ## 520 p. : $b ill. ; $c 22 cm Contents: The jade worker ; The honest clerk ; Fifteen strings of cash ; The monk s billet doux ; The foxes revenge ; The hidden will ; The two brothers ; The beggar chief s daughter ; A just man avenged ; The tattered felt hat ; The courtesan s jewel box ; The oil vendor and the courtesan ; The old gardener ; Marriage by proxy ; The proud scholar ; The tangerines and the tortoise shell ; The story of a braggart ; The alchemist and his concubine ; A prefectship bought and lost ; The merry adventures of lazy dragon 700 1# Xianyi, Yang, $e tr. 5 Rebecca Wedl Exam Part 2 Libr. 248 Dr. Karpuk p A just man avenged (AC) The tattered felt hat (AC) The courtesan s jewel box (AC) The oil vendor and the courtesan (AC) The old gardener (AC) Marriage by proxy (AC) The proud scholar (AC) The tangerines and the tortoise shell (AC) The story of a braggart (AC) The alchemist and his concubine (AC) A prefectship bought and lost (AC) The merry adventures of lazy dragon (AC) Notes/Specific Rules Used in #2: 245 field: C. Enter a work under its title proper if (a) the personal authorship is unknown or diffuse, and the work does not emanate from a corporate body or (b) if it is a collection of works by different persons or bodies (Title main entry.) 2. C.2B1. Substitute arabic numerals for roman in the following areas of the bibliographic description (Title proper, additional title information is not one of the areas listed. Thus, retain roman numerals.) 3. [1.1B10. If the chief source of information bears both the collective title and the titles of individual works, give the collective title as the title proper and give the titles of the individual works in a contents note. I don t think this rule applies in this case. It appears The Courtesan s Jewel Box is meant to be the title proper (because of its physical location and prominence), even though it is also the name of one of the works contained in the book. Additionally, it is the only work listed on the title page. Chinese Stories of the Xth-XVIIth Centuries seems meant to be a subtitle, because of its relationship (in size and location) to the title proper.]
Rebecca Wedl Exam Part 2 Libr. 248 Dr. Karpuk p field: 1. Varying forms of title chosen would in part depend upon the flexibility of the system. For example, I would include varying title with jewelbox as one word only if the system was so inflexible so that it would not find the title with jewelbox entered as one word. Also, I am assuming a search for Chinese stories would find Chinese stories etc. 250 field: B1. If there is an edition statement, it is transcribed as found, with the exception that standard abbreviations found in Appendix B and numerals found in Appendix C are used in place of the actual words from the source of information. 260 field: C3. If the name of the country appears in the source of information, transcribe it after the name of the place if it is considered necessary for identification, or if it is considered necessary to distinguish the place from others. (In this case, don t need to include China after Beijing.) 2. Doesn t seem necessary to include additional printer, distributor information here or in notes field in a second-level description. 300 field: A1. Precede other physical details by a colon. Precede dimensions by a semicolon D1. Give the height of an item in centimeters, to the next whole centimeter up. 505 field: 1. Contents note. With object in hand, would confirm that these stories are indeed the contents. I am almost certain they are, however, because they are listed in the table of contents. 2. A.10. Capitalize the first word in each note A1. Separate introductory wording from the main content of a note by a colon followed but not preceded by a space. 520 field: 1. Might consider 520 summary note depending upon whether system searches notes fields, if I thought note could add important keywords in addition to the subject headings, etc. 700 field: 1. Added entry personal name.
Rebecca Wedl Exam Part 2 Libr. 248 Dr. Karpuk p Need to determine authorized forms of names D1. Optional addition. Designations of function. (Translator function designated by tr.) K. Make an added entry under the heading for a translator if the main entry is under title. 740 field: 1. Added entry title access points. 2. Need to determine authorized forms of titles. 3. I debated whether to include all of the stories as 740s in a second-level description. In the end, I decided to do so for the following reason: I am cataloging for an academic library. Depending upon the focus of the institution, it could be reasonable to conclude that some users might study the history of Chinese stories/literature and look specifically for one or more of these stories. Some of these stories might be difficult to find. A user would not know the full contents of this book from the title. If the library s system does not search note fields, a user would not find a specific story/stories in a search. Further, the 505 field does not come under authority control; the 740 field does. Problem with this decision: a lot of authority work to be done. On the other hand, only 200 stories total from this period have been published, and these stories have attained a lofty place in literature, so seems worth the effort.
