IEEE TPC Style Guide for Authors: Updated 20 January 2011 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION is a refereed quarterly journal published since 1957 and sponsored by the Professional Communication Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Our readers are engineers, scientists, writers, information designers, managers, and others working as scholars, educators, and practitioners from across the globe, all of whom share an interest in the effective communication of technical and business information. IEEE TPC includes four types of papers: 1. Research Papers 2. Tutorial Feature Articles 3. Teaching Case Feature Articles 4. Book Reviews This link takes you to the journal s website: Primary References for IEEE TPC For consistent style, IEEE TPC adheres to the following resources in this order: IEEE TPC Style Guide Merriam Webster s Third New international Dictionary at w.com Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed. (CMoS) at 1
Order of Information in an IEEE TPC Manuscript Order of Information on an IEEE TPC Manuscript s Title Page The title page should list all authors names, addresses, telephone numbers, and addresses. It should also indicate whether the author is an IEEE member. Anat Hovav, IEEE Member Alan G. Gross Korea University Business School 238 Ford Hall Anam Dong, Seounbuk Gu University of Minnesota Twin Cities Seoul, Korea Minneapolis, MN (82) anatzh@korea.ac.kr agros@un.edu Order of Information on an IEEE TPC Manuscript s Second Page The second page should include the following information in this order: 1. Title (14 point Arial) 2. Abstract We cannot accommodate boldface, headings, or bullets within the abstract. Author must either remove this formatting and incorporate the text into the abstract or move the content to the body of the text. If small caps are used for a definition in the Abstract, small caps must be used again (once for the same definition) within the body of text. 3. Index Terms in alphabetical order. Only the first index term is capitalized, and a period should be placed at the end. Do not include an and before the last term. Then begin the paper without an introductory heading. 4. (a) Biographical statement for regular research paper: Each author of a research paper or tutorial should supply a biographical statement, including IEEE membership (if applicable). Each biographical statement should be about 50 to 75 words. (b) Biographical statement for book review: Same information as research paper plus information about the book reviewed. The Socially Driven Life Cycle of Academic Scholarship: A Longitudinal Study of Six Electronic Journals Abstract Early studies of electronic journals (e-journals) viewed the web as a technological discontinuity that would deem traditional academic publishing null. This article uses the industry life cycle framework as a lens to examine the formation of academic e-journals. The article proposes five factors affecting the academic publishing dominant design selection process and examines these factors against six longitudinal case studies. The study concludes that from technical/functional, economic, and market perspectives, e- journals are superior to paper journals (p-journals). 2
Index Terms Academic publishing, electronic journals, electronic scholarship, publishing life cycle. Rebecca Walton is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington. Her research interests involve information and communication technology for development (ICTD), particularly information systems design and project management. She has designed and conducted research in Africa, Central Asia, South America, and the US. Her research experience involves ICTD projects to support public health, microfinance, and emergency logistics. Biographical statement for book review: Same information as research paper plus information about the book reviewed. Book Publisher: Cambridge, MA, and London: MIT Press, 2011, 337 pp. plus index. Information in the Methods Section of an IEEE TPC Manuscript This section should include a statement of IRB Approval (if applicable): If the manuscript reports research involving human subjects, authors should indicate one of the following in the methods section: (1) that they have obtained the approval of their institution's IRB for the study and that participants gave written informed consent, or (2) that their IRB deemed the research "exempt." Order of Information at the end of an IEEE TPC Manuscript The order of content for the end of the manuscript is as follows: 1. Acknowledgments (if applicable): If the author supplies an acknowledgement of research funding or other support, this should appear just before the References (after any Appendices). 2. Appendices (if applicable): Each appendix must be mentioned within the text and numbered. Appendices are typeset as text (not artwork, like tables and figures). These should appear at the end of the body of the text before the References. 3. References 3
Headings 1. Our journal does not include an Introduction heading; delete it if there is one in the paper. 2. Headings should not be numbered (e.g., remove the number from the beginning of this heading: 2.2 Sources of Communication Entropy). Headings for Regular Research Papers FIRST LEVEL Arial 12 point type (sans serif), boldface, small caps but initial word caps on all main words. Do not capitalize articles, prepositions, or conjunctions unless they are the first words of the heading (e.g., THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE). Second Level Roman type (serif), boldface, same line as text. Run in with text except put three extra character spaces between heading and article text (e.g., Postmodern Ethics Postmodern ethics is the study of...). Third Level: Italics, initial caps on main words, run in with text but include a colon after heading (e.g., Speed versus Presentation: At present, the more heavily designed ). However, if the third heading immediately follows the second heading in the text, the second level heading should not run with the text (it should be a separate line like the first level). Headings for Abstract, Index Terms, Book Reviews, and Tutorials The headings for Abstract and Index Terms should be initial caps, italics, and boldface. The headings for Book Review and Tutorial should be 14 point, Arial type (sans serif), and boldface. Using Type Use boldface for emphasis even in quoted material (i.e., if the quoted material italicizes a word for emphasis, change it to bold). Use italics for words that are linguistic data. In stretches of italicized text use the same font in the rest of the document for words that the author inserts in brackets. Use italics also for titles of journals and books. Foreign words (including et al. ) are not italicized. Use small caps when introducing a word or concept or for the title of IEEE TPC (unless listed in references as a cited journal see italics). Use quotes for a unique use of word, for references to a word (e.g., What Smith calls glocalization ), and for quoted material that is shorter than three lines when typeset (about 22 words). Use roman type for numbered hypotheses or research questions. Format as a block quote. Boldface. RQ1. H1. 4
Quotations Permissible Changes to Quoted Material Although in a direct quotation the wording, spelling, capitalization, and internal punctuation of the original should be reproduced exactly, the following changes are generally permissible to make the passage fit into the syntax and typography of the surrounding text. For any questions, please refer to CMoS (see ). 1. Single quotation marks may be changed to double and double to single (see 13.7,13.28). 2. The initial letter may be changed to a capital or a lowercase letter (see 13.7, ). 3. The final period may be omitted or changed to a comma as required, and punctuation may be omitted where ellipsis points are used. For ellipses, use the 3 or 4 dot method (see 13.7, ). 4. Obvious typographic errors may be corrected silently (without comment or sic ; see 13.7 and 13.59). Capitalization in Quoted Material In the rigorous method, any change in capitalization of the original must be indicated by bracketing the letter concerned, whether in a run in or a block quotation. If the author has used brackets to indicate such a change, let the brackets stand. [T]he conservative party... is timid, and merely defensive of property.... [I]t does not build, nor write, nor cherish the arts, nor foster religion, nor establish schools. When a quotation is used as a syntactical part of a sentence, it begins with a lowercase letter even if the original is a complete sentence or a fragment of poetry beginning with a capital. For use of brackets in legal works and textual commentary, see CMoS With another aphorism he reminded his readers that experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other an observation as true today as then. When the quotation has a more remote syntactic relation to the rest of the sentence, the initial letter remains capitalized. As Franklin advised, Plough deep while sluggards sleep. The initial letter of a block (long) quotation may be lowercased if the syntax demands it for example, if a phrase such as So and so maintains that precedes the quotation. For rules about block quotations of more than one paragraph, see also CMoS In discussing the reasons for political disturbances Aristotle observes that revolutions also break out when opposite parties, e.g. the rich and the people, are equally balanced, and there is little or no middle class; for, if either party were manifestly superior, the other would not risk an attack upon them. And, for this reason, those who are eminent in virtue usually do not stir up insurrections, always a minority. Such are the beginnings and causes of the disturbances and revolutions to which every form of government is liable. (Politics 5.4) 5
References In Text Citations References to other sources should be numbered sequentially by order of mention in the text, with the number placed in brackets at the end of the sentence and printed on the line (not as a superscript): [1]. In text citations should appear at end of the clause/sentence. Multiple in text citations should appear as [1], [2] or [1] [3] and should appear in chronological order as [4], [17], [34], and [35]. Direct quotes that will occupy fewer than three lines when typeset should be inside double quotation marks, with page number of quoted material listed after source number: [1, p. 321]. Direct quotes occupying more than three lines (four and over) should be formatted as block quotes, where quote is indented from left margin without quotation marks, and any reference should appear outside the period. NOTES: The Abstract cannot contain reference numbers. Also, only last names can be used within the paper (no first names). References List The list of all references cited in the text should appear in numeric order of mention as endnotes. If samples below are not adequate, see Chicago Manual of Style, 16 th edition. References use sentence style capitalization with article or chapter titles (CMoS 15.45) and headlinestyle capitalization with book titles (CMoS 15.45). Each reference begins with the first initial of the author then follows with last name. References to other sources should be numbered sequentially by order of mention in the text, with the number placed in brackets and printed on the line (not as a superscript): [1]. Only one reference should be listed per reference number. Footnotes and endnotes for references or for other material may not be used. The list of all references cited in the text should appear in numerical order of mention as endnotes (see samples that follow). NOTE: In regard to personal interviews, interviews should not be listed as a reference at the end of the paper (because this type of information is not technical per se). Instead, this information should be incorporated into the text, giving the person s name and date inside the text itself whenever information is used from the interview.
