1 Advanced Placement Fairview High School Summer Reading for School Year: This document contains summer reading and homework requirements for all of Fairview High School. Five academic departments have articulated summer reading assignments to be done in preparation for the school year. 1. Language Arts: IB and AP (all grades) 2. World Language - IB/AP Spanish 5 - IB Latin (multiple grades) 3. Social Studies - IB History of the Americas (12th grade) - AP U.S. History (11th grade only) - Pre-IB U.S. History 4. Science - IB Biology - IB/AP Chemistry 5. IB Film There is no summer reading this year for ToK.

2 Fairview English Department Honors Program Book List and Summer Reading Assignments, Grades 9-12 General The information below articulates the literature which will be read in advanced English courses at Fairview High School. Parents and students should make their best effort to obtain the exact editions listed below so that students have them in class when discussions and seminars are taking place. The students can take part in these discussions more readily if they have the same editions with the same page numbers in class. We strongly encourage students to purchase all texts prior to the beginning of the school year to avoid a lack of availability later in the year. Texts are available at local bookstores. If you choose to order online, please search by the ISBN number, rather than by the book title. Searches by book title do not always bring up all available editions. PIB 9 Language Arts your LA class. REQUIRED SUMMER READING: by George Orwell; Publisher: Plume 60th Anniversary edition; ISBN: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck; Publisher: Penguin; ISBN: An adult-level book of your choice fiction or nonfiction (see notes below). Please read, but do not annotate, the three books listed above. Students will take comprehension tests on Of Mice and Men and 1984 during the first week of school in August. We will read the novels a second time during the school year to give direct instruction in the fundamentals of annotation. Notes on Choice Book: We hope you can find a book that you will truly enjoy. During the first month of school, each student will present a book talk to the class on their choice book. Please DO NOT read the following for your choice book: 1. A play or book of poetry 2. The Odyssey by Homer 3. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston 4. A novel or work of nonfiction classified as Young Adult by the publisher (if you re not sure whether or not a book is YA, look carefully at the publishing information at the front of the book, or online). 7 World Language Spanish Spanish 5 IB HL students only: Crónica de una muerte anunciada by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Students can get these books through Amazon, and there are several new and used books that range from 70 cents to $ Latin Latin Students ENTERING PIB Latin 2 in the fall of 2016 are required to complete summer review. Students need to review first, second, third declension noun and adjective endings; learn the 4th and 5th declension endings and sample words; review all tenses of the indicative including present, imperfect, future, perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect for first, second, third, and fourth conjugation verbs in active voice only; review all the rules for forming imperatives for all conjugations; review all irregular verbs; review personal pronoun declensions; review demonstrative adjectives such as hic and ille; practice Latin I tests posted on the NLE website (nle.org), focusing especially on the reading passages. Help can be found on Ms. LiCalsi s school website under the PIB Latin 2 tab. Students ENTERING PIB Latin 3 in the fall of 2016 are required to review all grammar and to memorize all the uses of the subjunctive on the subjunctive cards. There will be a test on subjunctive cards within two weeks of returning to school in fall Students who choose NOT to use cards on the Spring 2016 PIB Latin 2 final will NOT be permitted to take this additional assessment next year. Students should use the NLE website to practice Level 2 exams. Focus on the reading passages and note any of the problems you encounter on NLE exams so that we can clear these up in class on Day 1. In addition to grammar review, students need to read the entire Aeneid in English. I have provided each student with a copy. Take plot notes on each book. Pay special attention to all the details of Books 1, 2, and 4. Book 1 is the topic of your IB exam senior year. Do an exceptionally thorough job on Book I. Hand in your hand written, NOT TYPED, notes on day 1 when we return. Students ENTERING IB Latin 4 in the fall of 2016 need to study the Catullus poems we covered in class this year as well as the Vergil lines we completed. Additionally, students need to create vocabulary lists and take notes for lines in Book 1. While making lists and taking notes, please read these lines for general comprehension. World Language

8 Social Studies IB History of the Americas Scott Peoples I would like you to purchase a copy of John Charles Chasteen s Born in Blood in Fire: A Concise History of Latin America, 2 nd edition (W.W. Norton & Company, 2006). The second edition is much cheaper than the newer edition; you should be able to find an affordable used copy on Amazon.com or other online booksellers. You could also talk to any veteran of Fairview s History of the Americas classes Dr. Campbell Hale used this book for several years, and her former students may be willing to part with the copies they purchased. You are to read Chapters 1 and 2 prior to the start of school; you ll face a reading test about this material early in the year. Pre IB US History Scott Peoples I would like you to purchase a copy of Colin Woodard s American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America (Penguin, 2012). Earlier editions are fine, and you don t need to buy the book new there are affordable used copies available on Amazon.com and other online booksellers but since I plan on referring to the themes explored in this book throughout the school year, you will want your own copy. I d like you to read Chapters 1 9 before the start of school, and to be prepared for a test over this material early in the year. Advanced Placement U.S. History Kathy Hicks SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT To be announced.. Social Studies
