2 Dear Parents and Students of 2 nde IGCSE , This is directed only to the families of students following the International Section in English course (IGCSE) in 2nde next year. The reading program for the nde IGCSE is as follows: Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (English Language and Literature) To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee (English Language and Literature) A View from the Bridge, Arthur Miller (Drama) An Inspector Calls, J.B. Priestley (Drama) The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde (Drama) We recommend the following four paperback editions to be bought. We prefer the ordering of these editions which will make discussions run more smoothly due to all the students having the same text. The ISBN-10 and the ISBN-13 are provided to help you find the books easily. However, any addition of the text will be allowed. 3 For the English Language and Literature section of the course, students do not read any of the books for the school year. Due to the difficulty of the novels, we will be reading Pride and Prejudice and To Kill a Mockingbird throughout the year together as a class. However, students are expected to complete the following two preparation tasks attached to the end of this summer booklet. These will be collected on the very first day of class. {20 marks} 1. Jane Austen Research: The first novel that we will study in class together is Pride and Prejudice. Therefore, it is necessary that you understand the context and background information of the novel s time period. Complete the Jane Austen questions attached to this booklet. (8 marks) 2. Touching the Void Preparation: Read the attached extract, from the novel Touching the Void. Answer the two questions and complete the writing activity attached to this booklet. (12 marks) For the Drama section of this course, students must have read A View from the Bridge for the fall and complete the following at-home activities on a separate piece of paper. Be active while you read write a summary of the plays after a certain number of pages. {20 marks} 1. Collect information about the playwright. (4 marks) Include information about: i. His personal background; ii. His literary style / literary movements he belonged to; iii. His influences, major works, favorite topics, etc. 2. Write a monologue as a character (4 marks). It can be anywhere before, during, or after the events of the play and needs to be between 350 and 450 words. Indicate the exact number of words. 3. Choose one of these (4 marks): i. Draw a time line of the play. ii. Create a flowchart of the play showing the major events. iii. Do a big family tree of the Carbone family and draw links between the characters (occupations, likes, language, personality, etc.). Make it beautiful and rich! 4. Using the character selected for the monologue, select 5 quotes from this character that relate to any of the following themes (4 marks): Law / justice, anger / violence, jealousy, womanhood, and analyze the ideas they explore as well as the language used. Accompany each quote with a brief (3-5 sentences) P.E.A. style commentary explaining its relation to themes. 5. Choose one of these (4 marks): i. Choose a scene that you really like and write about how you would stage it. ii. Create a movie, poem, dance piece, painting, rap song, etc. to represent a scene or theme from the play bring the text or video. All entries are expected to be typed and double spaced. Students must include their sources accurately at the end of their paper. For both the English Language and Literature assignments and the Drama assignments, they will be marked according to the following criteria: 3

4 Accuracy of analysis; Creativity Justification of the ideas from the text; Grammar, structure, vocabulary. Students are allowed to do research, but all entries and responses are to be their own. Plagiarism will be severely sanctioned. The grades will be used for the first trimester. Each question will be used in exercises in class, so make sure that they are neat and ready for the first day that we meet. This document will be our first impression of the level of English of our students and help us to better assess their needs. We hope you have a great summer and we re looking forward to next year! 5 Jane Austen Research: Complete the following questions about Jane Austen. There are some recommended websites below. You may use other websites to find your answer, but please list them. Answer the questions entirely and use in full sentences in your answers. {8 marks} Recommended websites: - janeausten.org ) Please find Jane Austen s full name, date of birth, place of birth, and the name of any other additional works she has written. 2.) When is her novel, Pride and Prejudice, set? In what time period does it take place? 3.) Describe Austen s home environment while growing up. List her immediate family members. 4.) Explain Jane Austen s education. 5.) How did Mr. Austen, Jane s father, gain his income? 6.) Why did Jane Austen seek privacy in her writing? How did Austen s sister, Cassandra, keep Austen s information a secret? 7.) Describe a common theme or topic that Austen often explored in her writing. 8.) Research and explain the term landed gentry. 9.) Who was Tom Lefroy and how was he important in Jane Austen s life? 10.) Name three specific social rules, or forms of etiquette, that were followed during this time period. Touching the Void Tasks: Complete the questions below after you have read the attached extract, Touching the Void. Answers must be typed, double spaced, size 12, and font Times New Roman. One paragraph is six or more sentences. {12 marks} 1.) Do you think it is acceptable to sacrifice the life of one person, to avoid two people dying? Why or why not? Answer in one paragraph. (2 points) 2.) Should we admire people like Joe Simpson, or are these the sort of risks you accept if you take part in dangerous sports? Why or why not? Answer in one paragraph. (2 points) 3.) Think about an event, real or imaginary, that might seem very different depending upon your point of view. Write TWO first person accounts of the same event from two different standpoints. Each account will be 2 paragraphs long, for a total of 4 paragraphs. (8 marks) 5
