2 Smyth-Sewn Case Binding Smyth-sewn case binding is widely regarded as the best book binding method available anywhere Smyth-sewing is a process of weaving thread through the spines of folded and gathered signatures The main advantages of Smyth-sewn case binding are strength, durability and books bound this way lie flat Typical products range from high-quality coffee table books to ultra-durable children s books and everything in between

3 Smyth-Sewn Case Binding (continued) The first step is cover material selection. You can choose from a wide variety of cloth, leather-like, offset printed materials and more Decoration options include foil stamping, debossing, guilding, cloth or ribbon book marks, head and foot bands, diecutting and multiple layered cover materials A case is made from cover material that is glued to and wrapped over board stock The case is then attached to the book block by gluing special endsheets to the inside of the case The result is a durable, attractive case-bound book

4 Smyth-Sewn Case Binding (guidelines) If perforating is required for signature folding, they must be applied to the head, not the spine Without uniform signatures, projects may require costly and time-consuming hand production Print your signatures with the grain direction of all forms running parallel to the spine A thin layer of glue is applied to the spine of the sewn signatures after all signatures are sewn together

5 Adhesive Case Binding Lower priced alternative to traditional case binding Affordable for both long and short runs Popular for directories, manuals and promotional materials requiring additional durability

6 Adhesive Case Binding (continued) Your choices include cold applied white glue, hot melt glues or super strong PUR glue PUR glue is the strongest, most durable bookbinding adhesive available Books bound with PUR glue are flexible, lie reasonably flat when open and are resilient even under extreme conditions Pease Bindery uses PUR on all books with coated text and upon request

7 Smyth-Sewn Soft Cover Binding A hybrid of adhesive and internal case binding A durable, yet economical binding method for longer runs Used for school textbooks, religious publications, and manuals

8 Adhesive Binding vs. Smyth-Sewing Binding methods depend on project budget and strength requirements of end users it depends Smyth-sewn books lay flatter, are stronger and more durable than adhesive bound books Adhesive bound books are popular for both economy and versatility When binding thick books, preference should be given to Smyth-sewing
