1 CCHS 9 th - 11 th G R A D E Summer Reading Romance Every college preparatory student at CCHS is encouraged to read books from the summer reading list. For each book that you read and complete the project, you will earn bonus points. English Summer Reading Assignment: Realistic fiction Sports Choose one or more of the books from the summer reading list and read it over the summer. You are responsible for finding a copy of the book (all can be checked out form the library, bought from Amazon or other book stores) Complete a combination of assignment that equal 50 points per book. For example, you could do five 10 point assignments. You could do two 20 point assignments and a 10 point assignment. Get the idea? You have the freedom and choice to complete the projects that you wish to complete. When you turn in your projects, be sure to include your name, class period, and the project point value- project number (i.e., for the first project in the 10 point category, write ) You may complete a project for 1, 2, 3, or all 4 books if you choose. If you complete multiple book projects, one will be added to each quarter for bonus points. Each completed project is worth 25 possible bonus points. Projects are due the August 24 th. 3 The Projects 10 point (Written projects should be 1 page long, typed, and double spaced, unless otherwise noted) 1. Make a soundtrack for the book. Choose at least 10 popular songs that showcase the important themes of the novel. For each song, include the lyrics and explain in at least two sentences why you chose the song and how it relates to the book. 2. If you could change places with one character, who would it be and why? Your explanation should be at least one page. Remember to describe the character and his/her situation well because your audience may not have read the book. Give us EVIDENCE--examples of things the character has done or said that supports your description. 3. Which character is most like you? Why? Your explanation should be at least one page. Remember to describe the character well because your audience may not have read the book. Give us EVIDENCE. Also, give EVIDENCE of what it is about you that is similar to the character--these might be examples of things you have said or done. 4. Make a cartoon of the book or a chapter (at least 8 panels in full color with text) that incorporates the theme. 5. Draw a pivotal scene from the book. Your drawing will be scored based on how much detail is included. Make sure you somehow show who the people are in your picture. 6. Describe an experience you've had that was like something that happened in the book. Your description should be at least one page. First, describe the event in the book, then describe the event that happened to you. 7. Make a collage based on the important themes from the book. Use clippings from magazines, newspapers, online pictures, etc. The collage must be on paper that is at least 8½ x 11 and should include at least 10 different clips. Include an explanation on the back. 8. Design a bulletin board display (this can be drawn or created on the computer) that illustrates the book s theme. The bulletin board display should include at least 4 images and 2 quotes. It should relate a theme of the book visually, in addition to any words you might include.

4 15 point (Written projects should be 2 pages long, typed, and double spaced, unless otherwise noted) 1. Become one of the characters and describe your experiences during a certain event. Your description should be at least two pages. Write in the FIRST PERSON (using 'I') and remember to use as many senses as possible in your description. 2. Choose one character and then tell how they behaved/what they were like in the beginning, how they behaved/what they were like at the end, and how they changed. Be sure to emphasize what made them change during the course of the story. Your description should be at least two pages. 3. Pretend you are a newspaper reporter and write out an interview with one of the characters (at least 10 OPEN questions and answers). Make sure you questions address the themes of the book. 4. Write an ORIGINAL SONG about a theme present in the book (at least 20 lines.) Include a one paragraph explanation of how the song relates to the book s theme. 5. Make an illustrated time line of events in the book, make sure your time-line includes at least 10 events with a two sentence description and small picture or clipping describing each event. 6. What could happen after the story is over? Write a brief summary (two pages) of a sequel to the book (describe the main characters, tell what the plot would be.) 7. Redesign the front and back cover of the book, complete with two paragraph blurb and quotes on the back (these should be made up!) 8. Write a "Dear Abby" column with questions from at least four characters asking for advice and your answers as Dear Abby (each should be at least 1/2 page.) 9. Get two different colored pens and choose a page from the book that you particularly liked. Begin by writing the first sentence from the page in the book in one color. Then add a sentence of your own in another color. Then go back and write the next sentence in the book. Continue alternating until you have finished the page. 10. Write an encyclopedia entry about your book or a dominant theme of your book. An encyclopedia entry is a detailed account about a topic (think Wikipedia, etc.). Your entry should be formatted like an encyclopedia entry and include at least 1 picture and 2 subheadings. It should be 2 pages in length.

This should be at least three or four pages and in the style of the book. 2. What do you think should have happened that didn't? Write a chapter that's missing in the middle of the book. This should be at least four pages and in the style of the book. 3. What happened first? Write a chapter that comes before the book began. This should be at least four pages and in the style of the book. 4. Write an essay that discusses the important themes of your book. Be sure to use specific quotes and examples from the book to support your ideas. 5. Find and read at least two reviews of the book. Read them and write a summary (attach copies of the two reviews.) What surprised you? What didn't surprise you? Your summary should be at least two pages and include specific information about theme. 6. Rewrite a section of the book from a different character's point of view than is in the original book. This should be at least four pages and in the style of the book. 7. Compare your book to television shows. Choose at least 2 TV shows and write a compare/contrast essay that examines how the themes are similarly portrayed in your book and the TV shows. The essay should be 3-4 pages in length. 8. Make a scrapbook devoted to one or more of themes of the book. Be creative, use a variety of images, and incorporate quotes from the book.

Write and illustrate (you can use cut-outs) a full children's book telling the story of your book with a cover. While you should simplify the story, be certain that the theme is still present. 2. Create a newspaper based on your book. Include a variety of articles based on the important events and format it to look like a real newspaper. 3. Create your own original and CREATIVE assignment based on the novel that incorporates the book s theme (must get approval from me!) 4. Design a website devoted to your book that includes information about the theme as well as the characters, setting, important events and author information. The website needs to be available online.
