1 Message from the Board of Directors Another year has gone by and it s time for all of us to get some rest and enjoy the summer It has been a good year for the Board with 125 members, which is an increase from last year. Michel Bédard has resigned after two years of excellent work as treasurer. We want to thank him sincerely because, without him, APPEAL would not have been the same. Next year, the tasks of the treasurer will be shared between Josée Marcoux, Jacques Gagnon and Jean Dupéré. Fortunately, the other members expressed the desire to continue for a second tenure. Thank you all for your involvement! During the temporary leave of France Rémillard, Director of social Activities, Jean Dupéré will be the person in charge of the social activities and Carole Beauchamp is up for proposing some of them. Appeal is trying to find replacements for three monitors for the fall session, so if you happen to know someone who could fill out the task and is an Anglophone, please refer the person by sending an to appeal1984inc@gmail.com. The Annual General Meeting (AGM), where all members and monitors are invited, will be held on September 23rd. It s a date to mark down on your agenda right away. It s important that all members be present to hear what the Board has done during the year and to elect a new board of Directors. APPEAL functions because of its volunteers, so please be there in great numbers. More details will be sent to you as the summer progresses. The weekly meet up at Café Corinne in Charlesbourg was a success because of Eve, who welcomed the people and enjoyed being there. We want to thank her for her availability and her competency. Lorie will take over from May 3 rd and this activity will keep on all summer except two weeks in July (the 15 th and the 22th). All members are welcomed to participate. If you have not registered yet, there will still be time to do so in August. To register, write to the president at her personal address because the fall session starts on the September 17 th. We need the number of participants in order to create the most optimal members-tomonitors ratio, so sign up soon! Farewell to Andrew Clayden Things happen fast sometimes. Andrew enjoyed being at APPEAL for many years. For him, it was, before all, a social club where he met people in a friendly atmosphere making sure everyone could speak comfortably.

Many members had the occasion to thank him and have a last drink with him wishing him the best. Andrew, for everything you did for APPEAL, we thank you sincerely.

Writing Haikus was the topic of one of the workshops proposed by Andrew Clayden this winter. Some members had pleasure in writing them and agreed to have them published here.

The APPEAL Open Book Club The last meeting of the APPEAL Open Book Club took place at Brûlerie Rousseau on April 19th. As you know, this social activity is open to all members who like to read and to meet to express their opinions, likes, dislikes, etc. on the book selected for reading. We meet about five times a year, and we discuss a new book each time. Needless to say that the Book Club is a golden opportunity to work on our vocabulary and English grammar while discovering new authors and writing styles. It is always intriguing to listen to what other members have to say about the book. As you may imagine, this activity needs a certain level of commitment, since the books chosen are of about 300 pages long; one has to plan ahead and devote many hours of reading to enjoy the books to their fullest and be ready for the Book Club meetings. On the other hand, reading the whole book is not an absolute obligation; some members would read just parts of it and still be great contributors to the meetings. There were seven participants at the last meeting on April 19th : Hélène, Annie, Lise, Yolande, Jeannine, Jean, Gervais. The group discussion was lively and the general feedback on the selected book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer, was excellent. Actually some participants found that it was the best book they have read so far in the context of Appeal Open Book Club. Others found that the writing style used in the book, which was an exchange of letters between multiple correspondents, was at first difficult to get used to but then was perfectly 3

4 appropriate. This book is illuminating, charming and funny; a real page turner. We recommend it. The next book that has been selected is the Orphan Train, by Christina Baker Kline. Our meeting will take place on June 28th. As usual, an invitation with details about the book selected for reading will be sent out to all Appeal members at least six weeks in advance. Gervais Lapointe, Representative / facilitator for the Appeal Open Book Club. A Visit to the Maison Desjardins Our visit of the Maison Alphonse Desjardins took place in a very pleasant atmosphere, after a filling buffet-style brunch at Le Vieux-Lévis restaurant on rue Bégin in Lévis. The tour guide for Desjardins House was a friendly young lady, a student of law, whose knowledge of the Alphonse Desjardins matched her understanding of the life of the family that occupied the home. She explained the culture of the time, the work the founder did, and his wife s contribution, not only as a co-founder travelling sometimes to distant branches of the institution, but also to the running of the household. The various framed documents, furniture and works of art attested to the workings and the history of the Desjardins legacy. Carole Beauchamp The Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar On Thursday April 12th 2018, several members of APPEAL attended the opening night performance of the Quebec Art Company's Spring musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. This musical was written around 1970 by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Weber and has enjoyed tremendous success both in New York and London since then. The story revolves around the life of Christ in his adult years up to his death, but rather surprisingly the play does not portray his resurrection. There are very few spoken words between the songs making up the play which can lead to confusion as to who the various characters are. Familiarity with Christ's story is definitely prerequisite in order to understand how the songs are linked together. This particular performance was very well done. Although the QAC is an "amateur" theatre group, there was nothing amateur about the show. The principal characters of Judas, Jesus and Mary Magdalene were skilfully portrayed and sung by Julian Dawson, Michel Blackburn and Zita Bombardier-Touret, respectively. The solo "I don't know how to love him" by Ms. Bombardier-Touret was particularly well done. As for the set, it was minimalist with no real changes between scenes except for a short bit during the crucifixion. The costumes were also fairly simple, reflecting the time when the musical was first performed - imagine the peace-and-love hippie movement and you will have a good idea. Finally, given the theme of the play, the venue was very appropriate Chalmers- Welsey United Church (on Ste-Ursule street in Old Quebec). A beautiful church in the Protestant tradition and well worth a summer visit. All in all, it was a great production that was enjoyed by all those who attended. Grant McIntosh 4
