11 and evokes good reactions at the moment in France (recommended album tracks: The End, Sad Eyes, Meant For You). Jaap Eggermont, famous for his perfect and sophisticated productions, was involved in the making of the Stars On 45 project, scoring enormously all over the world. Another Eggermont production is The Star Sisters whose Hollywood and Broadway repertoire charted in 8 European countries. The Dutch young band, The Shorts, sold more than 2 million copies of their Comment Ca Va and was no 1 in the Benelux and France and Top 10 in Germany, Portugal, Denmark, Austria and Switzerland. It was quite funny that their simple, naive lyrics in the French language even pleased the hesitant French market. Dutch 'Eel Pop' is still a major factor in the Benelux with old timers like The Cats, Pussycat, BZN and more recently Maywood charting constantly, but contrary to some years ago it does not automatically result in international sales anymore. But Holland scores well with newer sounds; watch out for The Nits (CBS), their latest Adieu, Sweet Bahnhof is already picking up tips from Germany, France and Belgium. And although their last single Sketches Of Spain has gained international reactions, especially in the Southern European countries, they should still do much better outside of Holland with their melancholic and romantic popstyle. Another Dutch treat with an already existing international record is Bolland (former Bolland Luc Van Acker & Bolland) two brothers who write, arrange, produce and perform their own songs and already scored with You're In The Army in '83. Their new single 10 American Girls could become a biggie! Sweet lady Vanessa (EMI) is very popular in Holland but still has to break over the Dutch borders. SHATTERING SOUNDS Although Belgium acts never actually made such an impact in other European countries, there are certainly a few acts to watch. Most of them sound very progressive and a band very popular for their live concerts in the Benelux, France and Scandinavia is T.C. Matic. Recently the cable channel Music Box even made a special feature around the band. They combine African rhythms with western funk into a very exciting live-ish atmosphere. They recorded 3 albums of which the latest Choco (EMI) from '83 is probably the best example of their style: full of power, roots, ripping guitarcuts and nude and shattering sounds. Another act using African roots and rhythms is the Belgium/French act Allez Allez who had some nice press coverage in the. Flemish pop act De Kreuners recorded 3 studio albums for WEA and recently a live album Weekends In Belgie. Though there seemed to be some strong interest coming from Canada, until now a record deal has not been signed yet. Luc Van Acker (EMI) is a famous name and not only in Belgium. His solo album The Ship picked up a lot of airplay on the Norwegian National Channel NRK and he joined the English band Shriekback on tour and also played on their album Jam Science. A lot of guest musicians are featured on his remarkable album and we recommend the following tracks: Rain, Heart & Soul andzanna. Further acts to watch are Jo Lemaire, Arbeid Adelt!, Luna Twist, Honeymoon Killers and The Scabs. French rock artists singing in their native language always have a problem to attrack media attention in other countries. But with the ever growing importance of disco/dance records there are more possibilities for them to chart elsewhere. Some of the artists make English versions, others just stick to the French originals, Jeanne Mas' -route Premiere Fois is picking up a lot of club airplay in Germany and Holland (with the translated Into The Night) as is Axel Bauer with Cargo. Another artist having hits on the continent is P. Lion. Happy Children attracted a lot of young people in Belgium, Germany and Holland with its simple but catchy tune. An artist from which we can expect much in the future is Charlelie Couture, recently signed to Island Records in the and who debuts with his album Rockette. Megastars like Johnny Halliday, France Gall, Eddy Mitchell and Julien Clerc continue to have million sellers in their own territory but the only countries picking up on these successes are Belgium, Switzerland and Canada. There are more international chances for the nouvelle French music cuisine of RTL's darling Jean Jacques Goldman (new single Long Is The Road- Epic) and rock band Telephone who are high on the French charts with Un Autre Monde. 17 HEALTHY BREEDING GR ND The disco scene also is a very he y breeding ground lately for Spanish artists a Colegide from Gary Low was a hit in H and and Germany, while Tullo de Pis po (Stop Bajon) is picking up responses as well in those countries. A new act worth the attention is the group Pistones (Ariola), Spanish most popular rock/wave band at the moment. The album contains 10 sharp danceable tracks, all suitable for radio programming. Amongst them the summer hit Pistolero, the title track Persecucion and Mientes (which could be a hit if released as a single). A song that unfortunately failed to chart internationally was La Union's Lobo Hombre En Paris, a number one in Spain for WEA, which certainly deserved to do better elsewhere. But surely all these Spanish acts vanish in the light of the immense Julio Iglesias success. Sales of his latest album 1100 Bel Air Place might very well result in best ever sales figures for a European artist beating the phenomenal Abba sales. At the moment Italy is producing some hits proving to be suitable for export. Amongst them are Radio Deejay's Sandy Marton with People From Ibiza (one of the first times a record production by a radio gang becam an international smash), Nino De Angelo' uge hit Guardian Angel, Gazebo (I like C a pin) and of course Ricchi E Poveri with th ' string of hits. Novecento (VVEA) make a r ce debut on the European cross -over list h their rocky dance tune Movin' On. Gaze o's new single Telephone Mama (Baby Records) is just released and will surely spread around Europe. The group Matia Bazar never got enough attention, besides a small hit in Holland with Vacanze Romane. Their new wave sound is certainly exciting enough to arouse some media interest. A DERNATE STATEMENT With regards to Northern Europe the situation at the moment is rather quiet. Though there are enough acts worth mentioning and capable of making mature and intelligent pop/ rock music they do not tend to cross over. Of Peter Schilling Falco Frida 24 Metal/Glitter Band Hanoi Rocks course we do need to make an exception for Frida, but at the same time she had her favourable background and was able to attract first class producers (Collins, Liliywhite). Her Abba counter parts Bjorn and Benny have teamed up with Tim Rice for their most ambitious project solar with the musical Chess, launched in Europe this month on RCA. A nice Norwegian act to watch is Lava (Polygram). They have already delivered their fourth album, featuring a duet with Randy Crawford, who did a very successful Scandinavian tour with them as backingband in Their music is a smooth combination of jazzy rock with a pop influences (recommended album tracks: The Woman I Want and the ballad Wait For Me). Some other Scandinavian names: Torch (Swedish Heavy Metal band able to compete with and US HM bands), Thomas Ledin, already tipped for some years as a potential world star, Holy Toy, a Norwegian band which according to some will make eventually an impact with their album Panzer And Rabbit on the British independant charts, Nicklas Radstrom (Swedish pop poet), Pate Mistajarvi (Finnish), Peter Lemarc (Swedish), Monroes (Norwegian), Kim Larsen- Midt Om Natten (Danish, charting high in both Denmark and Norway), Johan Lindell (Pessangereren) and The Nomads (their album Where The Wolf Bane Blooms is in some countries available through import and called by some 'the ultimate garage band sound') etc. Oh! how on earth could one forget the Metal/Glitterband Hanoi Rocks who are so popular in England?? Except for their drummer Razzle, they are all originally Finnish. Their last album Two Steps From The Move (CBS), is a definite statement of facts, that Hanoi Rocks is getting bigger and bigger. All in all we can state that creativity is flowing around Europe and no doubt the career of many European artists will gain momentum around the globe in With the vast amount of new releases it is hard to predict the European breakers of the future, but EUROTIPSHEET will keep a very close eye on all the latest developments and report them to you on a regular basis.

They are planning to broadcast two monthly radioshows called Continental Pop and Continental Rock, both programs are dedicating all their airtime to the top productions of the major European countries. Let's assume we are chairing the programmers' meeting and decide on the records admitted in these two shows. Both shows will end with the top 3 crossover in Europe, being Alphaville, Sandy Marton and Boney M. this week so we will disregard these while deciding. Well, as Germany has scored best around the globe during the last year we will start with the German Talent. For our Continental Popshow we have an easy choice with Nena's Irgendwie, Irgendwo; lrgendwann another Nena delight. For the Rockshow we'll take Jennifer Rush' Ring of Ice. (this weeks German chartmaker Peter Schilling will be featured by us in next month's program). There was some discussion about taking Howard Carpendale with his new schlager Samstag Hecht, but while we have no objection against including a real German song in our show, we will today concentrate on the 2 singles with most international appeal. With Alphaville and Boney M. both In the crossover top 3 Germany has its -well deserved- fair share of the program. For France the popchoice is easy with Cookie Dingier (EMI) scoring great points with Femme Liberee. We could also have taken Laroche Valmont with T'as Le Look Coco (Carrere) but Cookie is really cooking. For rock we take Telephone, already a major rock factor in France for many years. Since moving to the Virgin label they are without any doubts the French Rock Heroes again and are accepted gladly with their single Un Autre Monde. Italy still has the Euro chartmaker of the week with Sandy Marton (produced by the 'gang' Radio Deejay... which Eurostation will take up this challenge?) but also provides us with the traditional "slows". Novecento, a WEA discovery, was no. 1 in Italy with Movin' On but has not yet done too well elsewhere. Antonello Venditti (Heinz/ Ricord) comes up with a very romantic Ci Vorrebbe Un Amico so we'll take both. But in our next Continental Pop Show we surely will have to make room for the new Gazebo hit Telephone Mama. Apartfrom a possible play on one of the tracks from then new Pooh album we wouldn't have recommendations for our Rock program. The same applies to Holland; although The Nits have a beautiful new album out, there isn't yet a hitsingle. However, on the popfront (or for our disco/dance spot) we have two real Dutch fun candidates; Video Kids (Boni) with Woodpeckers From Space and new act Mai Tai (CNR) with Body & Soul. Austria will be included in our program through their international hit STS (Amadeo)- Fuerstenteld, which already charted high in Germany and oddly enough sees a Dutch translation from an act called De Toendra's entering Veronica's Top 40; STS definitely is for the Pop show. Unfortunately no single candidates from Switzerland this month. Scandinavia, usually a very potential breeding ground for international stars has been rather quiet during the last few months. But we have no problem entering Frida's Shine in our pop program and as a news item would definitely spotlight the amazing Chess project with Bjorn, Benny and British singer Elaine Paige. Going more south again we arrive in Belgium where we donot have the usual problem of deciding between French or Flemish records. There are 2 French language hits with Belgic background; Frederic Francois (Phono ra with Mon Coeur Te Oit Je T'Aim a surprise hit by Peter et Sloane (Vogue) with Besoin De Rien, both for our Continental Pop Show. But let's go back to the sunshine down in Spain and arrive at the absolute winner of Europop Mr. Julio Iglesias whom we offer the title tune of our show. It's a pity he had to cut short his European Tour, due to a sore throat and exhaustion, but his 1100 Bel Air Place album (CBS)is all over Europe. Nr.1 in Spain this week is Jose Luis Perales (Hispavox) with Tentacion and we will play this tune too. And that concludes our European Hitmusic Hour on ENR and we feel sure Mr. Juro D.Jay has a great program... suitable to do well in your country too?1?!. It is with that intention, that we have printed the original labels between brackets and if you would like to start such a program and need some help?, call us nowl Juro will have his new playlist next month. 3

ABOUT THE CHARTS THE EUROPEAN TOP 100 (SINGLES/ALBUMS): In many European countries one chart is recognised by the music industry as the " OFFICIAL " hitparade and is therefore used for the compilation of the EUROPEAN TOP100. However there are other countries vinare various charts are in existence and often equally important. For these countries we have compiled a number of these charts into one representing the sales in that market. Each chart position for every country then receives, relevant to that position, an equal points rating which is in rum multiplied by a factor determined through the latest known sales percentage of total singles Or album) sales which that country holds in relation to the rest of Europe. There are different percentages for singles and albums. These figures am kindly provided on a regular basis by the industry -organisations such as IFPI-BPI-Gallup-Deutsche Phonoverband etc.4c-upepeepi. For the EUROPEAN TOP 100 SINGLES 25 charts are used from 16 countries, for the EUROPEAN TOP 100 ALBUMS 20 charts are used from 15 countries. Since the sales Percentages of a few countries are too small to get their hits into the EUROPEAN TOP 100 (provided these records are not chatted in any other territory), we are also printing a TOP 3 IN EUROPE list each week. The EUROPEAN AIRPLAY TOP 50 is compiled through all our -correspondents tips received this week.( -)Records of the week receive extra points. The airplay lists of the airplay report organisations within some of the European countries are also used in the calculations, as well as playlists of maior radio stations. (")Please note that riot all received tips appear In Eurotipsheet but they are at used for the calcuation of the Airplay Top 50. THE EUROCLIPS UST shows the music -videos most aired on television throughout Europe in the week prior to publication. It includes video-t.v.programs and other t.v.shows partly using video's from 14 European countries. For more detailed information on any of the chart -systems please contact our chart department. Welcome to our first Euro Artists Special in Eurotipsheet. During the last 10 years talent produced in Europe has conquered the world and especially the last few years this privilege is no longer just a British feat. Artists from almost all European countries, backed by increasingly professional producers and more experienced record labels and managers started to become international stars during the Seventies and even much more in the Eighties. In this first Special you can read about the Euro history as well as what different markets have in store right now. This time we give more or less an overview and are concentrating on the acts from the Continent for a very positive reason; There simply is too much talent around and with the still dominating position of English productions we decided to start with the continental flow of successful) continental productions. This will be followed in 1985 with a series of specials, coming in the year when the European Parliament and the Council Of Europe have declared; The European Music Year. The first 1985 Euro Artists Special will be on Britain. All in all we plan to have 8 specials around European Artists during the next 12 months including special issues on Britain, Germany, Italy, France, Scandinavia and 2 on New Talent. NOT ALL TITLES Most of you will have noticed that we are not printing all titles in our correspondent reports anymore, but mainly just artists. With the ever increasing number of correspondents, we are encountering a space problem. Since we all know the titles of those records that became international hits, we are just listing the artists. Of course where there is a relatively unknown record we still will give full titles as we also do in the reports from those countries where a different title by the artist is mentioned. Particularly in the Southern European countries you will often find former hit titles mentioned as the hit life of a record takes much longer in these regions. By cutting on this we are able to give you more reports and we feel sure you will agree with this choice giving you an even more complete picture on what is happening in Europe. SPECIAL ON EURO RADIO - T.V. Our issue of December 17th will have a special section on European Radio And Television and will give an overview on each major country including reports on the development of new media; spotlight on some trendsetters; FM versus AM and European Video Music Programs. You can reserve advertising for your station at very reduced.prices now. Please contact us and do not hesitate to give us your media news. MEDIA CORNER Yes, you sure all want to meet each other as indicated by the results of our last question on the circular. We will be working on it and please make sure your passport is in good order for Good luck to Canal Plus in France with the start of the much talked about new network in France. Antoine De Caunes has already a lot of good music programs lined up for the first few weeks and some of these will be seen by a full French audience as, to give them a taste of Canal Plus (The Extra Channel), the authorities are transmitting these shows decoded, meaning everyone will be able to watch including the non- subscribers. Dutch KRO radio has started a Worldparade on Sundays including hits from all corners of the world, coordinated by program chief Hubert Van Hoof. And while talking about Holland, programming has changed on Hilversum 3 with the religious orientated EO gaining airplay time on the Popchannel. This means e.g. that the National Hitparade show is now on Wednesday afternoons instead of Sundays and presented by Tom Blomberg of NOS. KRO switched to Sundays and VPRO is on Wednesdays. WELCOME Eurotipsheet now has 400 regular correspondents and a warm welcome goes out to our many new correspondents including WDR Germany's Barbara Gansange, DLF's Hans Holger Knocke, RTL's Frank Eichner and Harald Rehmann. In the meantime there is much speculation about future plans on one of Europe's first Television heroes Mike Leckebush, who will not be continuing his successful run of Musikladen shows for Radio Bremen. Surely Mike will be back with a quality program. On December 13th Horst Hartwich's Musik Mixer show for SFB 1 Berlin will have its 100th broadcast. The show runs each Thursday with an international music magazine and is SFB's most popular item. In January Radio Gong will start programming and this strongly backed show will be coordinated by Walter Freiwald and Willi Zwingmann. Radio Xanadu is strong on the Munchen cable with 22 percent ratings, under the supervision of Jo Lueders. For France we welcome Dominique Duforist for N.R.J.(FM); Christian Savigny for RFM and Radio 7 with Francis Rousseau. In Holland Alfred Lagarde and Annette Van Trigt for Veronica; Jaap de Groot for both radio and TV NCRV (he has now added a very popular television program Popshop, produced by Sjef Boers) and Bram Van Splunteren, formerly with VARA but now reporting for VPRO. For Belgium we welcome Jos Van Oosterwijk reporting from BRT Brussels. Talking about that country, popular moderator Bart Peeters who had that quality t.v.show Pop Elektron, a combination of pop and science, is now much in demand in Holland. After various offers he decided to do a Sunday t.v.show called Baanbrekers, a dramatic parody on workers' morale. In the meantime, back in Brussels Tom Huybrechts started again with his Villa Tempo program, a combination of clips and live performances. In England BRMB Birmingham is organising a series of live gigs featuring local acts from the Midlands and between November and February the station will regularly broadcast these concerts. The Tube, Tyne Tees popular t.v.show is now also on the air in Holland. Biweekly the Dutch Tube is on VPRO and the show gets its Dutch treatment from Jan Eilander. We welcome the Old Grey Whistle Test undoubtedly one of the most respected European Rockshows produced by Trevor Dann and John Burrowes. Congratulations go out to Tony Newman and his Radio City Liverpool existing 10 years. In Denmark Jurgen Mylius is back on the air with his Top 10 Videolist for Eldorado and we have added Lokal Radio Herring's Top 10 requests reported by Gitte Brauer. DRS 3 brought us Christoph Alispach for the Swiss territory and we welcome him too. Sadly enough we have to say goodbye to one of our first supporters Swiss Mani Hildebrand who will produce more 'serious' programs from now on and this puts an end to his Music Scene and Ten o'clock Rock shows. Keep on swinging Mani!! In Austria Hennes Rossacher and Rudolf Dolezal from ORF made a 45 -minute- Falco special for worldwide broadcast, In Italy Claudio Cecchetto's very artful Video Deejay program is now on Italia Uno daily. Claudio, who also is head of radio Deejay, the rock orientated Milan based radiostation, has a unique and original way of presenting videos and we will write about the details in one of our forthcoming spotlights. 5

25 EURO-HITS... THE UNPREDICTABLE PHENOMENON Everyone in the musiobusiness rated the changes of Susanne by the Art Company of becoming a U.K. smash very slim. The record not only became a Top 30 hit, but even conquered the French charts in its English language version. The record was already a hit in the Benelux (the Dutch version) and in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (in the German version). Now, the English version is also reporting good sales in the Scandinavian countries. Just one example of the special phenomenon, the Euro-Hit, which we are dealing with in this special issue. Europe is divided into several, quite separated record markets. If we agree that popmusic is basically an anglo-saxan idiom, the U.K. market is the main European market. Maybe not in terms of volume, but certainly in terms of influence. There is not one European country that produced so many international cross - border hits as Britain. In addition to that, most trends in European music since the early Sixties started in Great Britain - spreading out over the rest of Europe. Only occasionally other European countries proved to be the source of a major musical phenomenon. The early Seventies saw an explosion of Dutch Beat Music with groups including The Tee Set and Shockin' Blue. The Germans introduced us to a thing called Krautrock with Krattwerk leading the way. In the Seventies Sweden offered us Abba. Maybe not a musical trend, but certainly the most influential European group ever. More recent examples of Eurorock include Italian singer Gianna Nannini and Germany's Nena. In terms of volume, Germany is the number one European market, especially if one counts the Austrian and German speaking Swiss - market. In the past Germany was a market hard to crack with very few promotional outlets. Things have changed, mainly due to more adventurous programming of the German television networks. For a time Radio Bremen's (television) show Musikladen was almost the only possible outlet for international artists. Now all three German networks have their own chart -show. The third network's Formal Eins being the most influential at the moment with a weekly nationwide exposure. STEPPING STONE TO EUROPE Traditionally the Dutch market is the stepping stone to Europe. The Netherlands are not only very close to England, they also have an "open ear" to new sounds, whether they come from the U.S.A., the U.K. or any European country. If an artist breaks in Holland, the Belgium market follows automatically, Then, breakthroughs are possible in two directions: southwards to the French speaking markets or - more likely - eastwards to the German speaking markets. So the Dutch market may not be significant volume -wise, but more in terms of influence. Especially German programmers are known to look to Holland for "new acts". The French speaking market is quite separate from the rest of Europe. Local acts are usually dominant in the best seller lists and hits from other countries usually take some time to cross over. With the advent of "radio libres" (free radios) in all French speaking territories (France, Belgium and Switzerland) things might change as English language records tend to get more coverage on these stations. The most consistent supplier of international hits in Europe is of course the U.K. Ever since the Liverpool Invasion of the early Sixties, Britain is a constant source of hits, not least because of a very high "pop music consciousness" with the people. As we saw, penetration of British hits in the various European countries differs greatly. Also during the last twenty -odd years the British influence on countries like Holland, Belgium and Denmark varied a lot. There was a time when the national charts in these countries were almost identical to the U.K. charts a few weeks earlier. Especially during the late Sixties when pirate radioships in the North Sea exposed 6 millions of Europeans in the northwestern part of the continent to the English sounds. Nowadays a U.K. hit is not automatically a chart cert in the Benelux. A group like The Jam with several Top 10 hits in their pocket never made any real impact on foreign market: they were surely found to be "too British" for European tastes. On occasion British acts might even break earlier in Europe than in Britain itself. In quite a number of cases European audiences remained more loyal. Dave Berry still was big in Holland long after he disappeared from the English scene. The Sweet had a dedicated group of followers in Germany long after they disappeared from the Abba, the most important asset of Sweden's export market U.K. charts. German fans also were very loyal to many of the RAK-artists. A recent example is Kim Wilde. At the moment she is heading for a comeback with her new MCA -contract, but until recently her records were more popular on the Continent than in Britain. In Germany one reason for the so-called teeny banner bands to stay popular Is the German music press. Magazines like Bravo, Pop/Rocky and Musik Express keep artists in the picture for a longer time. EEL SOUND After the U.K., Holland has through the years been a constant supplier of Euro-hits. It's not hard to find reasons why Holland proved to be such a prolific country. Firstly, the country is very anglo-saxan minded, maybe more so than any other European countries. To give one example - totally unrelated to the record business - Holland is the largest non-english speaking market for English language books. Large publishing houses test- market their English books in Holland before they decide to release their books in other European countries. In the late Sixties Holland used to be under the influence of the seaborne radioships like Caroline and London. At the moment the country is not only within reach of BBC's Radio Nona

26 '- The Art Company. conquering the French charts 1 and 2, around one million homes can follow the music shows of Sky Channel and Music Box. Because of the continious influx of English language music, Dutch groups at an early moment started to record in England rather than Dutch. In the late Fifties and early Sixties most artists restricted themselves to conversions of British orarnencan hits, but in the mid -Sixties the tide turned and groups started to record original material following in the footsteps of British bands. Of course their command of the British language was not always up to an acceptable standard, so Dutch groups singing in English found easier acceptance in the non-english speaking parts of Europe. Strangely, Dutch groups like The Tee Set, Shockin' Blue and Mouth & McNeal even managed to get American Top 40 hits while they went by completely unnoticed in England. It wasn't until the mid - Seventies when the Dutch group Focus - specializing in instrumentals! - was the first Dutch act to really make it in Britain. Meanwhile, especially Germany and the Scandinavian countries were proving to be good markets for Dutch acts. As early as the late Fifties Dutch artists were trying for the German market. With considerable success: in 1961 the Dutch twosome The Blue Diamonds sold more than one million copies of their version of the evergreen Ramona in Germany! The first Dutch record to achieve chart -status in England was Farewell In The Rain. Thanks to heavy coverage on Radio Caroline the record managed to enter the lower part of the Record Retailers' Top 50. But until Focus came along no Dutch group really made it in Britain. The Golden Earring followed with their famous Radar Love. Probably the most famous of all Dutch records is Una Paloma Blanca by The George Baker Selection. A record which is by all standards the perfect example of the unique blend of English pop and Dutch downto-earth singalong music; a musical style which in Holland at the time was typified as the "Eel Sound" (because most of the groups making this kind of music came from the fishing town of Volendam). Especially this type of music proved to be most popular with audiences around the European continent. A few months ago Susanne, by the Art Company might have been named the record most unlikely to succeed on the English market, but again the naivety of this record somehow seemed to appeal to the British audience. GERMAN LANGUAGE MUSIC XI Germany was much slower than Holland to produce international hits. Perhaps because the German audience for years only seemed to want to hear German language music only. A fact which forced many American and British acts to record German language versions of their songs. In the fifties, people like Connie Francis and Wanda Jackson tried their own brand of German. 'Lithe' Peggy March was even so successful that she decided to move and live in Germany. And even the Beatles recorded some of their earlier tunes in German! Of course times have changed and the German audience now seems willing to accept English language music. This not only opened the door of the German market for many foreign acts, but it also gave German bands the opportunity to sing in English. Strangely - the biggest hits by German acts were sung in German. To name but a few: Autobahn by Kraftwerk, Der Kommissar by Falco, Skandal Im Sperrbezirk by The Spider Murphy Gang and of course 99 Luftballons by Nena. Although the latter group later recorded an English version of the song (99 Red Balloons) the original Euro-hit was the German original. During the Seventies Germany produced its own brand of English language disco music. Producer Frank Farian achieved Euro-status with acts like Silver Convention, Penny McLean and Boney M.. Through the years Germany was also the recording home for a lot of foreign artists: Greece's Vicky Leandros, Spain's Baccara and Italy's Nino De Angelo to name but a few. ULTIMATE EURO-POP GROUND Sweden never had any tradition of popmusic. But strangely enough, this country produced the ultimate Euro-pop ground: Abba. The Eurovision Song Contest was - and still is - known for producing one -hit wonders. Remember Gigliola Cinquetti singing that she didn't have the proper age for love? You're forgiven if you don't. While Gigliola is still a major artist in Italy most Eurovision Song Contest winners failed to make a continious impact on the European charts - whether they were Italian, Dutch, French or even British! But the Swedes stroke first time lucky: Abba turned out to be one of the most important assets of the country's export market. With a long background of Swedish language popmusic the various members of the group were firmly rooted in the Swedish pop -world. Their first English language effort Ring Ring was a limited Euro- hit: Holland and Germany made the record into an international hit. Sometime later, Waterloo proved that Abbe meant to be lasting force in the Euro-charts. Very few other Scandinavian artists made a claim to Euro-fame. There were Blue Swede, who were Hooked On A Feeling, Harpo, who wanted to be A Movie Star and Bo Hansson who made an impressive soundtrackto Tolkien's The Lord Of The Ring. More recently Danish duo Laid Back were singing the Sunshine Reggae. HOLIDAY HITS A special phenomenon among the Euro-hits is the Holiday Hit. During the summer months masses of people from the Northern European countries are transported to the Mediterrean sun. During the day they worship the sun, during the night, they dance to the Latin Disco Sounds. Every year a few Italian or Spanish records make it this way to the charts of Holland, Germany and Scandinavia! Unquestionable the 1983 Holiday Hit was Righeira's Vamos A La Playa. Unfortunately, much like the Eurosong Contest Winners, these Holiday Hitmakers prove to be one -hit wonders. Italy, one of the major suppliers of Holiday Hits, has also made some more lasting contributions to Euro-pop. Especially Germany seems to have an open ear for Italian music with lots of exposure on the German TV networks for artists like Alice, Ricci E Poveti, Fun Fun, Raf, Umberto Tozzi. Rockstar Gianna Nannini is a regular on "Rockpalast". Only occasionally these artists break ground in other countries, such as The Netherlands or Scandinavia. With one or two exceptions the British market is completely closed for Italian sounds: only the occasional Eurovision Song Contest makes any impact. Many Italian artists find their songs covered by others: a recent example is New York lady Laura Branigan who scored across Europe with her version of Raf's Self Control. Spain's number one Euro-hitmaker is of course Julio Iglesias. Ever since his Canta A Galicia was a European hit in 1972, the singer is a regular on the various Eurocharts - as well as on many other charts worldwide. Maybe Julio can now not anymore be regarded as a proper Euro-star, as he not only lives, but also records most of his material in the United States. Teaming up with fellow singers Diana Ross and Willie Nelson, Julio now is a truly world star. Greece's only contribution to Euro-pop was Aphrodite's Child. Their breakthrough came in 1968 with Rain And Tears followed by about half a dozen hits during four years. After the group broke up singer Demis Roussos - named the Singing Tent by Terry Wager - became one of the most popular soloist of the Seventies with regular hits all over Europe - including Great Britain. ROBERT BRIEL Julio Iglesias, Europe's number one hitmaker Italian Euro-Rock singer Gianna Nannini 7

I will be buying both the printer and the editor, dictionaries for Christmas. Now onto music. Radio 2 is a station who does not seem to get too much publicity, but recently the national press had major stories about the man who'll take over from Terry Wogan. He is a Scotshman named Ken Bruce, and has been doing the late Saturday evening show for some time now. Also on Radio 2 more changes are expected on daily shows to be announced soon. Pirate Radio Stations JFN, Skyline & Horizon Radio, where raided recently, and had their transmitters confiscated. However, that did not seem to bother the stations particularly, and they are now back on the air. As stated in this column recently, Radio Mercury, one of the newest commercial Radio Stations is now on the air. So too is Radio invicta, which can be heard broadcasting to the Kent area and coming into London too. Some recent releases which are picking up strong airplay at the moment, are the new singles from Nick Haywood and it really is a good record too, entitled Warning Sign. The new single from Roy Joy Until You Come Back To Me on Virgin is also excellent. New singles scheduled from imagination, Slade, Culture Club, and also Wham/ coming up in the next two months, all hoping for the Christmas biggie. A new record label to be launched via Virgin is called Siren. The label is a joint -venture between David Betteridge, formely of RCA, CBS and Island Records, and the Virgin Group Of Companies. The label will be announcing signings soon. After 15 years of being with A&M Records & Rondor Music, Derek Green has suprised a lot of people in the industry by quitting to form his own label of publishing venture. Radio Luxembourg have announced that Rob Jones will be leaving at the end of November. The new dj joining the station will be Tony Dewitt, he joins from Radio Aire. Gary Croley back on the air at Capital Radio, and since his illness, could he be talking even faster than he was before? Well done to Billy Ocean. His first hit in many years in the and the USA, and ft just goes to show that a good record will surface somewhere in the charts if the record company shouts long enough and loud enough at the radio stations. More singles to keep an eye on are the new Talking Heads single Slippery People and the new single from the Kane Gang entitled Respect Yourself. Strangely enough the Staple Singers once recorded Respect Yourself as a single, and this week they released their version of The Talking Head's Slippery People. I do love the new single from Poohah Makes 3, it's called Take It Back, and has got to be a huge hit for them. Scritti Politti, have their new single out this week, it's entitled Hypnotize. The Who are to release their last ever album, a double, they are also releasing a single entitled Twist And Shout, now where have I heard that song before? The Dazz Band are looking good with their new single Let It Blow and finally the new single from Ashford & Simpson is already picking up strong airplay. Making his Radio debut recently was Russet Kane, he has taken over the Capital Radio "Flying Eye" traffic report. Unfortunately for Russell, since he began working for Capital, the weather in London has been so bad, that it took him over a week before he could actually see very much from the plane.

28 THE CONTINENTAL PICTURE WHICH EURO-PRODUCTIONS ARE MAKING INTERNATIONAL IMPACT TODAY?? The climate fora true European Hit has drastically improved over the years. Partly due to the media explosion of the last decade and partly to the rise of disco/dance music artists from smaller countries have better chances to influence the International charts. At the moment Germany is the key market for Euro-Hits with the obvious examples of Nena, Peter Schilling, Trio and Alphaville. But a lot of new talent is coming up and it seems that the German market will last to exert its influence on Europe. READY TO BREAK New acts ready to break abroad are for instance Johan Daansen, Spliff, Palais Schaumburg, Mick Jackson and Jennifer Rush. Johan Daansen (WEA) is a Dutchman who now lives in Frankfurt and previously one of the busiest and respected session musicians in Germany. A new single Deadly Game has just been released and features Daansen on (powerful) vocals and guitars. Rock band Spliff (CBS) are very popular at the moment in Germany with the album Schwarz Auf Weiss (Black On White). Part of the band used to be backing Nina Hagen, the outragious lady from Eastern Germany who had such an erratic career. For those non - Germans willing to go beyond the threshold of German lyrics, there is enough to enjoy, Tracks like Bahnhofhotel and Radio prove that Spliff are able to deliver sophisticated and quality pop music of a high international standard. Palais Schaumburg (Phonogram) are already up to their third album Parlez Vous Schaumburg and although their 2nd album (produced by Coati Mundi) was enthousiastically received by the international press in which the group was praised for their funky 'intellectual' approach, they never achieved any real sales status outside of Germany. Further acts to watch are Mick Jackson (WEA) who debuts with the swinging Rock The World and the American born Jennifer Rush (CBS). Her single Ring Of Ice, a rocky piece featuring Jennifer's strong vocals, has entered the charts and definately has potential for other markets as well. The two other German speaking markets Switzerland and Austria, do not have a tradition yet of producing Euro-Hits. Favourable exception is of course Falco, the first Austrian pop artist to ever cross the Atlantic with his dance smash Der Kommisar. One other Austrian act deserving to be mentioned is DOF who had a hit in Germany and Holland with the electro tune Codo. Switzerland possesses 2 acts with possibilities for cross -over. Yello and Diethelm & Famulari. Yello (Vertigo) had some success on the continent with the single I Love You (supported by a wonderful video) drawn from their 3rd album You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess. Their progressive electronic dance music was favourably welcomed by the press. Diethelm & Famulari had a chart entry with their first album. On their just released 2nd album Valleys In My Head (Mercury) there is the same combination which makes them so unique: a half acoustic, half electric interplay between guitar and synthesizers producing a new dimension to pop music. A FEW YEARS OF SILENCE After a few years of silence, Holland is completely back with acts who score well abroad. The biggest success lately is for Art Company, who brought their Susanna to the top in no less than 10 European countries. At present the record has already sold 2 millions copies worldwide. For the European market they released an album called Get It Out Of Your Head. Hard Rock band Vandenberg is doing better in the US than in Europe, probably due to the fact that they are directly signed to the Atlantic label. A better European impact makes soft disco act Fox The Fox especially starting in Germany but now spreading around the continent. The American born, Forrest scored high on the English and Finnish charts with his rendition of Rock The Boat. He's also singing in the formation Band Of Gold, whose medley Love Songs Are Back Again entered the English and (recently) the American charts. Another typical Dutch tool for export are Roberto Jacketti & The Scooters, a new group consisting of 5 very young lads who had a recent hit with I Save The Day, a cheerful poppy tune, charting in Italy and France. Dutch band G -Race have brought their single Manhattan to the Top 10 in Germany, Denmark and good positions in Austria, Switzerland, France and Spain. Even outside of Europe, notably Japan and Australia, their 'Iko Iko influenced jungle sound' is picking up a lot of responses. Dutch's pride The Dolly Dots (Ariola) are at the top for 5 years already and not only in Broadway repertoire from the Star Sisters Holland, for the 6 piece girl group have been to Japan several times to do concerts and TV shows. As a result their single Radio sold over copies. The German public has also made acquaintance with The Dots through their appearances in almost every TV show but it never gave them big record sales. Check out their new hot single Give The Girl A Break. GODFATHER OF DUTCH R&R Herman Brood (Telstar), the godfather of Dutch Rock And Roll is back with a new album The Brood. In his long career he has won, in a storm, the heart and soul of everyone and it looked like he would become a major act in the USA some years ago. Although his international career has somewhat faded, his new album is once again tgziglhat this /,Proty. Herman is the life and soul of roc n roll and " not only in Holland. And take a closer look at Holland's hardcore future Highway Chile (CNR) whose first album was also released in the US. New single: Broken Promises. The name of Jasper van 't Hof (Keytone) should ring a bell as his single Pili Pili was already heavily tipped and got very good airplay in Germany (despite its length of over 15 min.). Together with people like Herbie Hancock and Paul Bley he was one of the first jazz musicians to incorporate electronic instruments in his productions. His album Is also entitled Pili Pili (a Zairian term for hot pepper) and hot this record is, especially for disco play. A new band to watch is One Two (WEA), consisting of ex -blues singer Tineke Schoemaker and Rob van Donselaar. Tineke's beautiful deep voice is coupled with Rob's clever and inventive arrangements. Their first single No Song To Sing was a hit in Holland Continued on Page 19 Dutch pride The Dolly Dots 9
