LONDON CALLING by Howard Marks For some strange reason, my last column didn't appear in the tipsheet, something to do with the editor Michael dropping his mug of warm milk all over my copy. You know how these old people have to drink their warm milk before they go to bed at night. Or in Michaels' case was it his 10 gin & tonic. Any way we are back as usual with whats happening or not happening for that matter in London (editor's note: another one of such serious insults and we'll never print your column again, Mr. Marks!Q. Firstly, the most interesting, and probably most important bit of news regarding broadcasting, is that Radio One officially opened their new studios recently. I had the pleasure of being shown the cons (as they are called at Radio One: short for continuity suites) by Radio One executive Dave Price. The studios are terrific, and very self contained, unlike the studios over at Broadcasting House. There is a close cirduit television, and even a small kitchen so that Steve Wright and his afternoon boys can make themselves coffee. Very different from the sparse offices, and corridors that used to be where the studios are now, they look something like the inside of a jumbo jet. I have it good authority that the studios cost one hell of a lot of money, but boy are they worth it. Also at Radio One, congratulations to Dave Atkey, until recently producer of the Simon Bates show. He now takes up a new executive post which is the job formerly held by Johnny Beetling Also at Radio One, we see the return of producer Harry Parker, who has been away working in other areas of the BBC for a while. Congratulations also to Mark Radcliffe who produces Saturday Live, and to Liz Redhead, who has been working on the Simon Bates show. They got married recently, and more about Mark in the next issue of Eurotipsheet (I can't say anything just yet!). Meanwhile, over at Capital Radio, John Sachs is now on the radio on Sunday mornings as well as during the week. Jessie Brandon is on for a longer period of time on her Sunday afternoon show, and Kelly Temple has lost his XYZ show, but he will return in a few weeks with something new. Those Dukes Of Trivia Phil Swem and Jeremy Pascal have a new show on Sundays, and that sounds very entertaining. Over at Radio Luxembourg, they also have new studios, and they look very nice too, especially the one with the blue and yellow lined wallpaper. When I was there last week, both Loose Ends, and Cool Notes were in for interviews with Stuart and 011ie Henry. Also David Lee Stone has just joined the station from Laser radio. All the London based pirate radio stations were raided recently on the same day. Guess what? They were back on the air the same day. When will the government realise that they are riot doing any harm, and are actually helping to break soul and disco records into the national charts. By the way going back to Capital Radio, they are really pushing London based talent such as The Cool Notes, Loose Ends, Paul Hardcastle, Smiley Culture and RAH Band. Look out for Belious Some, he comes from the same stable as those wild boys Duran Duran, and is all set for the tour with Frenkie Goes To Hollywood in America during May. He is backed on his single my members of Chic/Power Station/David Bowie's band. Not a bad start for an unknown lad from London. Bronski Beat are looking for a new lead singer, anyone out there with a high pitched voice, short hair, and certain sexual views please apply to Judd Lander at London Records. Their new single features that other odd lad Marc Almond. I forgot to mention before when talking about Radio One, that the new jock is Grahame Bannerman. He is also one of the youngest djs ever to have broadcast on the station. He is on from 7.30 to 9.30 Saturday nights. New records to listen for from Graham Parker And The Shot, Reflex, Al Jarreau, Imagination, David Knofler, Red Guitars (who are currently on tour in Europe), Paul Hardcastle, Scritti Politi, U2. Possibly the record with the worst taste ever is by Eleanor Rigby it's called I Want To Sleep With You, and with the first few thousand copies sold they are giving away a free contraceptive. Y what bad taste. Anyway most girls are on the pill these days. Gosh, I should be careful what I write here. I have it on good authority that even Vatican Radio subscribe to the magazine. And finally two nice things happened recently, and it's not often that that happens. Firstly the record business threw a party for the recently retired head of Radio One Derek Chinnery. More about that in the next issue, And also congratulations to -my good friends Angie and Ray Stock who as I write this thing have just had their second child, a little girl who at the moment has yet to be named. Well done to both of you. GERMANY SWF - Baden Baden - Rainer Cabanis- head of music SWF3 Records of the wee: Don Henley- All She Wants To Do Is Dance; Freddie Mercury- I Was Born To Love You. After closing the books it became obvious that phonographic industries still suffer from a sales crisis. Six years ago sales reached a peak of 2,5 milliards. Nowadays the figures are down to 2,0 milliards, which indicates in compulsion to 1983, a sales reduction of five million units, i.e. a loss of 2 percent. Insiders expect 1985 to end even worse. The German video market seems to be in limbo too: as TV stations, such as ARD, ZDF, SAT 1 and others announced to broadcast about 2000 feature films over the year, videoshops may have problems to keep their customers satisfied with their offer of 600 new films a year. The 22 million tv households - six millions of them own a video recorder - don't necessarily need to buy or rent the high prized video cassettes when there's a chance to watch the same film some months later on the telly. The crisis in the video market has also reached the video magazines. As they can't get enough advertisements the magazines tend to get smaller and smaller every month. Brighter days are to come for concert -goers, for spring is here and so are the open-air festivals. Instead of the usual noise of Formula 1 engines, the famous racetrack Nuembergnng will give accomodation to high class rock music on the 25th and 26th of May, Headlined by Foreigner and Chris De Burgh, the "Rock Am Ring" festival assembles the 'creme de la creme' of top musicians, such as Huey Lewis & The News, Joe Cocker to name but a few. Organized by Radio C and Bird there's another musical marathon taking place on the 2nd of June under the name "Rock Over Munich"with the likes of Foreigner, Saga, Rick Springfield, Night Ranger Glenna Nannini and others (see also our Tour News). A good idea deserves applause; Barbara Witten, head of press at Phonogram, asked pupils of a Hamburg school to paint their stars. The Continued on Page 16 11

George Hildebrandt, previously working for Chappell, decided to settle down as publisher. The last piece of news is quite hot: Richard Astbuty, program director of Cologne based BFBS, is going to take a one year break to try his luck as a radio owner. The story goes that he will move to Ventimillia to establish his own radio station. The station will broadcast on the Cote d'azur area. His position will be taken over by Patrick Eade, who is already a correspondent to this magazine. 11 NO 17 - APRIL 29TH 1985 page the Album route Most recommended new albums as chosen by the editorial team of Eurotipsheet. USA For Africa We Are The World (CBS) Prince Around The World In A Day (blamer Bros.) (Virgin) Everything But The Girl Love Not Money (Blanco Y Negro) The Colourfield Virgins And Philistines (Chrysalis) PSYCHEDELIC OVER CAI v." 0 ES The USA For Africa record is n ar ausing the same explosion on retail level as in the US; a lot of shops can't hardly handle the orders and are attracking consumers that normally never go out to buy a record. European programmers love the album due the amount of good & commercial tracks they can choose from; faves seem to be Tears Are Not Enough (the Canadian charity single), Springsteen's Trapped (live) and Tina Turners Total Control. Paul Young still takes a save 2nd as best played album in Europe and Go West is new at 3 (with the most consensus on the tracks Call Me and S.O.S.). The album we most enjoyed this week is Kenny Loggins' Vox Humana, his 6th solo release. Again a collection of well crafted songs and the recognizable voice of Loggins. Our choice is I'll Be There (co -written by Chicago producer David Foster), the perfect pop song with sophisticated vocal arrangements and an immediately memorable chorus. Other stand outs are the title track (the current single) and At Last, full of restrained energy and intimicy at the same time! She's called Fiona, her voice is a cross- breed between Pat Benatar and Bonnie Raitt and her debut album (Atlantic) is one that all should get your serious attention! Listen to the energy of James or the raw power of Talk To Me and you will understand why we have chosen this American rock talent as new to our recommendation list. The long and eagerly awaited Prince album Around The World In A Day, received a tremendous amount of tips only one day after its release and is a chart cert next week. Most djs love to play the album track Raspberry Beret, definitely the candidate for a single release. (Although His Royal Purpleness has decided not to release any singles of this album yet). Listening to the album, one notes the slight psychedelic overtones and the further departure from a true disco sound. A complete return to the psychedelic 60's on the Dukes Of Stratosphear album 25 O'clock (Virgin), a side project of the English band XTC. No doubt this is all done with the best intentions, but the result is a bit too clinical and mystifying. But there is no doubt that the influences of the 60's, or at least the period from '65 till '68, are making a subtle return into today's music approaches. Both Everything But The Girl and The Colourfield are using acoustic conceptions from this era, whereas the latter even sounds like legendary 60's bands such as Love and Pearls Before Swine (if these names do ring a bell to you, you have definitely passed the thirties!) First of all remember last summers' hit Ibiza sung by the beautiful blonde Sandy Marton? Well it seems we'll be dancing to another of his tunes this summer. The new single is called Came! By Came!- a funky Arabian sound. Try it, you'll like it. Another Italian new group to look out for is Mondorama. Their first Ip by the same name which is to come out soon, was taped part in Hannover and part in Italy. Italy has also joined the string of countries taping a charity single in aid of the hunger in Ethiopia. 17 top Italian singers got together a group, called it Musica Italia and taped a remake of the world famous song NeI Blu Dipinto Di Blu by Domenico Modugno. On April 3rd 1985 the first of 15 shows on RAI 1 took off. Ob-La-Di Ob- La-Da is a weekly programme based on music and video curiosities from our continent. MORE NEWS say) After joining Tina on stage in Birmingham, he whispered: 'Standing next to her is the hottest place in the universe. Her singing is like a kiss!!' I saw the show in Rotterdam and felt the heat, and I wasn't even standing next to her and she didn't even kiss me. I guess we can't all be as lucky as David * Oh yeah, did you know that 'Crazy From The Heat' by little Motormouth David Lee Roth has reached gold in the US? I did and now you know as well. Isn't it wonderful to have someone like me around, telling you all this great stuff? I thought so! * Well my dears, this lady here has run out of news - I guess it's bye byes (keep that cheering voices down!!) Be careful it's SPRINGTIME!!! Before I leave, here's a good advice for weekend enjoyment. HOW TO HEADBANG RIGHT: First, stand with your feet about 18 inches apart. Then pretend to play an imaginary electric guitar, display little or no musical dexterity. If you're a real enthusiastic individul, carry a real guitar with you to the gig. The next step is to bend over slightly from the waist and to shake one's head violently from side to side or up and down. it is even possible to create a circular movement from the neck after a certain amount of experience. This was an advice to be followed by the true fans of mine. Love to all of you Alexandra * * LOCAL TALENT TO WATCH France Gall - Au Zenith- Apache/Wea A double life album giving a good impression of her exciting life concerts. Further moves for Go West, Dire Straits (in it's third week to no. 7), Katrina &The Waves, Grant and Graham with their sophisticated duet, The Dream Academy and Freddie Mercury's solo outing. Especially the Benelux and the are very fond on U2's new release, their fantastic single The Unforgettable Fire is this week's highest entry in the Airplay Top 50. 'The Boss' can be very satisfied; not only is his new single I'm On Fire one of European's Hot Radio adds (new at 36 in the Airplay Top 50) but further to that, no less than 4 of his albums are charted in the at the moment (USA, River, Edge, Run) and his current album moved up two places (to 15). Three American artists have efferent sing s in th Euro malice at the moment. Rrst of ai Dan Hartman is popular for two records, Second Nature in the and The Name Of The Game in the Benelux; this same Benelux is working on Nothing's Gonna pc Change My Love For You m Ge e Benson while the fall- and The Sea (La Mer). And mainly due to Germany and the Benelux All She Wants To Do Is Dance by Don Henley is a Hot Radio Add this week while the are enjoying another track of his splendid Building The Perfect Beast album, entitled Sunset Grill. Two German acts are making inroads on the English market, Modem Talking and Alphaville. Both acts get heavy airplay with their current hit singles on the main radio stations and again this proves England is not always ahead in breaking new talent. THE GOD OF FISH We loved reviewing a single by the American band Nomo entitled Red Lipstick (Atco). The name Nomo seems to stand for the God of Fish of the Dogan Tribe in Mali, Africa. The singer/composer of this band, David Batteau wrote hitsongs for artists like David Sanbom, Donna Summer and Chaka Khan. Initially the song is a bit nagging but after a couple of plays it sticks into your head and refuses to leave. A single that couples a clean produced sound with a driving and demanding beat is Curtis Hairston's I Want Your Lo 'n' (Londoy): er IA. undeniable pop/disco appeal and one of our records of the week. Jagger seems to have succeeded in his plea for (Just) Another Night, he is now Lucky In Love and even makes it to our frontpage. Jimmy Nail isn't that lucky, although he must have felt quite honoured to have his version of the Rose Royce classic (Love Don't Live Here Anymore) produced by Taylor/Richards of Queen fame. The result is refreshing with its slow build-up and the haunting bass lines. 2zTONE L.A. Our last Sure Hit is for The Untouchables with their 60's soulrevival entitled Free Yourself. They come from L.A. but the way they look and sound make them more likely to belong on the English 2- Tone label! A heavy competition in France is going on at the moment with two different versions of the same track Around My Dream. One version is by Kasino (Carrere) while the other one is by Silver Pozzoli, an Italian artist on CBS. Last week we misprinted the name of the artist in our weekly European Playlist Report on page 4. No. 5 of the Radios FM should read Silver Pozzoli - Around My Dreams. EUROTIPSHEET PROVIDES YOU WITH YOUR EURONEWS! a - 3

24 FRENCH MEDIA...OUVERTURE!! OPENING UP IN THE 80'S In the popular musicworld. as well as in all sorts of other arts, France has always been the exception in Europe; a very closed community with a high protection towards French culture. For the rest of us Europeans it always seemed that France was totally disinterested in culture from the other European countries and many believed that for most French people the world ended at Lille. In the midst of the tremendous opening up of French media taking place during the last few years it becomes clear that French public, especially the young, are on the contrary very interested in what's happening outside. This is particularly true for popular music as can be seen by the amount of programming (and increasing recordsales) for 'foreign product' since the establishment of FM stations in France. Until the start of the 80's a few French AM stations dominated the market and their limited airtime for music was taken up for a big percentage by French music so that people all over France were exposed very little by international product. This picture has now drastically changed! And there are various reasons for it. First of all the new satellite era has sparked off a great number of new media possibilities, changing the fate of radio and television in France just as much as in other western countries. And apart from this, the new socialist government promised an opening up of media and although it seemed at first that they wanted to delay this (election) promise, they gradually gave in. FM VERSUS AM The establishment of FM radio In France was the key factor in the change of programming to American and British popmusic. Whilst the traditional AM stations like RTL, Europe 1, France Inter and RMC were strongly devoted to talkshows and very little to music, the FM stations exposed the French to continuous musicprograms as already known and popular in other European markets. Forthe French this meant a revolution and was greatly welcomed. From 1982 until late 1984 the FM stations in France revolutionized the media, the industry and tastes. There are now no less than 900 FM stations all over France, most of which are very small, but approx. 150 of them are important. These 150 are serviced by most record companies and together they can be of vital importance in breaking new artists and have forced the AM stations to change their formats. Still AM is devoted to talkshows but they not only have been forced to play more music, they also started to play more progressive music. A good 30% of French audience are now listening to FM and of course the impact is even greater towards the youth. It is interesting to see that the last 6 months FM stations have not gained further and that AM starts to fight back. Especially RR (Radio Luxembourg) and RMC (Radio Monte Carlo) are trying to win back their audiences. The French government is closely watching the development of the FM stations and sometimes criticize the amount of international repertoire that is being played. They also made life very difficult for the FM's in the beginning by not allowing them to take paid advertisement spots. FRA CHISING Howe -r, these rules have been loosened and there a e now various ways in which the FM station can find their income. The most impo t FM stations are obviously based in Paris o which NRJ is without any doubt the most i portant one. They use a system of franchi- ng and have now a chain of radiost ions in many French cities. Other importa 1 Paris based stations include 95.2 FM, RF k Poste Parisien, Hit Fm and La Voix.ollirer which are the leading of a total of 20 Paris FM stations. Says Marc Exiga, ex -general manager for WEA Filipacchi and now vice- president of Trema: "The French FM stations have changed our policy of releasing international product. With a good promotion campaign you can now sell between and singles by having airplay on FM alone. However, if you really want to have a gold single you still need the support of the AM stations". Obviously all industry people are closely watching the development of new FM stations and in any case the airplay of the most important ones is weekly checked by the Mediacontrol organization based in Strassbourg. Stations like NRJ are very active sponsoring concerts and constantly organize special promotion campaigns in order to widen their audiences. AM FIGHTING BACK As mentioned earlier the major AM stations were quite influenced by this sudden competition of the FM media. There is no doubt that RTL has been the most active one fighting back. It did certainly affect their programming especially in the evenings and at weekends when they present their programs under the banner of WRTL and play much more progressive music. During the day they still have talkshows as a majority but with clever programming of music they have been able to maintain their audience over the last few years and in fact are not really losing ground anymore. Although RTL is originally a Luxembourg based company, French government has a strong interest through a complicated system of part -ownership and involvement in the board. RTL's programming team under direction of PD Monique Le Marcis-Reich is well respected and is actively involved in all sorts of 'evenements' including Midem Gala's and TV shows whilst at the same time staying very loyal to French artists and building very big careers. Europe 1 has lost more ground but is still a strong competitor to RTL as far as music is concerned, whilst Radio Monte Carlo (RMC), a station that used to be only really important during the summer period when most French people moved to the south, have surprisingly increased their importance over the last 6 months and are a force to be reckoned with. There is no doubt that a new class of French artists will develop through the much greater exposure to 'foreign' music and this could finally give France more successful artists abroad, but more on this in our separate article on French acts. 25 TV MUSIC EXPLOSION While the changes at radiolevel are underway, the revolution on the TV side has already started. With the establishment of the first ever paid TV channel Canal Plus in France and the addition of many music shows containing clips on the 3 French channels, the public again is being exposed to much more international music. But there is much more to come... The 3 major channels only used to have variety shows mostly containing French megastars of whom most were known and famous already for more than 10 years. But the rise of the video did not pass France unnoticed and all 3 channels have introduced video shows. However, during the last 3 months a major clash has started between the French industry (SNEP) and French TV over the payment of rights over these clips and although a solution to the problem seems to come near, time works in favour of the TV stations (as e.g. the latest ratings showed that the video shows were less popular then people expected). So now the TV negotiators claim that they can live without videos and are putting increased pressure on French industry to lower their demands. CANAL PLUS Canal Plus, the payed TV channel, was the only organization coming to a financial agreement and so they kept on programming clips. The introduction of this channel was one of the most publicized adventures in France, although their progress on subscribers seems to be much slower than expected (Canal Plus claims to have subscribers now). They maintain their system of coded programs but are also presenting more and more socalled decoded programs which can be seen by all French households. And so it looks like Canal Plus is more and more becoming a sort of fourth channel as predicted by many industry experts. At this moment the non - subscribers have no excess to any of the movies shown but they do see many of the music clips. If Canal Plus fails to reach its subscribers targets, French government could always open up the channel completely which would give them a very strong tool for their politics. In France, like in most southern European countries, you can never divide media from politics and this is particularly the case in this country. In the meantime the 2 major TV channels, TF1 and Channel 2, are continuing their everlasting battle for popularity. Especially the last few months TF1 is coming up while Channel 2 seems to be loosing a bit. TF1's popularity is mainly due to an incredibly successful comical show by well known actor Stephan Co/taro, a daily show reaching almost 15 million people and helping TF1 to close the gap with Channel 2 drastically. This could further develop in the next few months as Channel 2 is loosing some of its major attractions. Michel Drucker, by far the most popular French TV personality, has announced that he will terminate his involvement to the extremely popular Champs Elysees show which broadcasts Saturdaynights till the end of June; Philippe Bouvard, a leading comedian, and Christine Kranz, the most wellknown face for newsprograms, have both left as well. In the meantime Channel 3 is also gaining popularity especially through their Saturdaynight Disney - channel when they present the most popular Disney series. MORE TV STATIONS? And now French government has announced that it is open for requests for new TV stations. Although it is not sure yet whether this has just been an announcement for political gains and good publicity (French general elections take place next year) they have immediately been bombarded by official requests for TV airtime. Some of the biggest French companies have submitted their proposals including the 'rightwing' publishing firm led by Robert Hersant, a private publisher with many influental daily papers including France Soir and Figaro, a fact 6 not particularly pleasing the present government. But there are others like Hachette (owning various bookcompanies), Europe 1 and last but not least the string of NRJ. FITL keeps rather quiet on this front but they have already excess to satellite programming and may be strongly concentrating on that. There is a lot of talk on this subject of direct satellite broadcasting with many experts expecting the French to welcome this medium to be received through private dishes, but the opening up will also take place through new legislation. The French law forbading companies in the field of books, entertainment, movies, records as well as touroperators to have publicity on TV is likely to be changed in 1986 and will open up the market for K -Tel -like operations. In the coming 2 years ail these changes will continue and it is specifically interesting to follow this revolution, never forgetting the political implications and the upcoming general elections. Eurotipsheet will keep you regularly informed! THE LEADING FRENCH TALENTS OF TODAY There are still very few artists crossing borders and the success of practically all artists is limited to France only, with a few exceptions making it in French speaking territories like Switzerland, Belgium and Canada. With the influence of the much broader use of international repertoire on French radio it is to be expected however that more and more record companies will be trying to create international sounding productions aimed at the world market. THE KING NEVER DIES But first of all, let us investigate the leading French talents of today. Taking a look at the current French hitparades, one immediately spots the dominant position that the French mega -stars of the past are still taking. Nana Mouskouri who used to be for many years on Philips has the leading spot once again. This time on a different label (Carrere) with her new single L'Amour En Heritage. And looking on the male side, it is safe to say that Johnny Halliday still is the most influential rock artist. His current life album is one of his best ever sold Ip's and contains various hits including his latest Ne Me Quitte Pas. A MUCH DESIRED STATUS Over the past years many new French rock talents have tried to dethrone the French King Of Rock. Presently there are two young rock talents that are being considered for such a much desired status. Jean -Jacques Goldman was able to built up a loyal following and is now, together with the help of RTL and a strong backing by CBS, established as a major rock artist. His latest single Long Is The Road (Americain) was for months and months on all French charts and the song definitely had strong cross -over appeal. At the same time Axel Bauer was corning up strongly, an artist that relied more on a 'modem' image and therefore attracted a younger audience. He picked up a lot of sales with the song Cargo and this well -produced danceable song was released abroad and created a lot of Continental airplay. Axel writes his own material and is a multi -instrumentalist of whom we expect a lot in the coming years. CARIBBEAN FLAVOUR Talking about important male acts we should ofcourse not forget to mention Julien Clerc who already had every strong following in the early Seventies (remember Si On Chantait or This Melody?), but has reached new and higher levels just recently on his new label Virgin with hits, extremely successful performances and television specials. Virgin is committed to break him internationally and an English title has been released (I Don't Ever Want To Go Away). His current French success is called Melissa, a nice song with a Caribbean flavour. Probably the biggest French male artist, apart Continued on Page 7 Julien Clerc (Virgin)... new and higher levels...

26 for Axel Bauer (Vogue). A modern image LES GRANDES DAMES Apart from Nana Mouskouri there are some other French ladies of rock that have an international name. Ever since the Eurovision success of Poupee De Sire, Poupee De Son, France Gall (Apache/WEA) has not only been one of the leading French record sellers but has from time to time crossed borders and performed on many television shows around the world. Her current hit single Hongkong Star is catchy and proves she has a sound that has all the qualifications to make international impact. Sheila &The Black Devotion had a string of hits some years ago (a.o. Love Me Baby and Singin' In The Rain) and they were in fact the only disco -orientated act coming from France whose name a iot of Europeans will remember. Sheila continued a solo career under her own name on Carrere but until now never scored outside of France. More on the poppy side France always succeeds to find new fresh talent. Linda De Suza (Carrere) had an European hit and is scoring big again these days in her homecountry with her mixture of Pop and MOR disco and CBS has a new talent called BiBi who's Tout Doucement (rout Simplement) is France hottest Airplay track at the moment. Our two favourites for a future big career and the chance to make it in many other countries are EMI's Jeanne Mas, who already scored two enormous hits in France with Toute Premiere Fois and Johnny Johnny of which the former has even been translated Into English. And Virgin's fresh new discovery Rita Mitsouko even made it to the top spot of our Euro-Crossover list (see seperate review). Mireil le Mattieu (Ariola), often called the successor to the legendary Edith Piaf succeeded to stay on a very high level and has made recordings in various languages including German and Japanese but cannot be called a true pop or rock star. Other ladles for whom record companies have tried to reach international success in the past are Veronique Sanson (famous for her ex - marriage with Stephen Stills) on WEA and Rose Laurens on Flarenasch. So far their international careers have not blossomed although they maintain their present positions amongst the leading French artists. For those of you who like sophisticated pop music we recommend the unique sound of Continued on Page 110. (Virgin)... fresh new discovery... Rita Mitsouko Telephone (Virgin), France's one/ true Rock band. than half a Michel Sardou (Trema)...rnore million... from Johnny Halliday, is Michel Sardou, who has already had more than ten hit albums selling more than half a million copies each and is the leading artist from Trema. The biggest surprise in the normally even French market of album sales has come from Michel Jonasz (WEA) who, although every successful live artist and a great lyricist, has never really sold very big numbers. But late '84 changed his luck and his present album Unis Vers L'Uni is selling ten times as much as his previous one. Further successes for Serge Gainsbourg (see L'Histoire) and Pattie acts Daniel Lavoie and Jean -Luc Lahaye, darlings of a younger audience. And to finish up mentioning the male artists representing France at the moment are two that had international record sales; Gerard Lenormand who is on Ariola and Deesse/CBS act Claude Barzotti who has already scored some European hits. 7

27 L'HISTOIRE France Gall (Apache/WEA)...no more poupees.,. Virgin's Valerie Lagrange, whose single La Fohe and album Les Trottoirs De L'eternite (produced by Barry Reynolds- known through his works with ao. Marianne Faithful) received enthousiastic reactions from many other countries on the Continent. LES GROUPES The French audience is, as we all know, not only extremely loyal but also seems to prefer solo artist ("Les Grandes Artistes") to groups. Therefore France is probably the European country that produced the least number of succesful pop/rock groups and there are hardly any French groups that have made an impact In other markets. Virgin act Telephone is according to many, France's only true Rock band. They scored several times in their home country and the hard -driving and competing sound on their Glyn Johns produced album entitled Un Autre Monde can easily be compared with that of other European rock bands. They will be playing on various open air festivals around Europe this summer. Ariola is pushing hard on Indochine and is releasing a new album called 3 this week, including their current hit single Canary Boy. One of the biggest hits of the year 1984 was Femme Liberee, a simple but very effective song by the teenybopper band Cookie Dingier on Pathe/ EMI. THE DUOS When French duos have a hit they really sell! Far over one million copies were sold last year of the CBS act Peter Et Sloane with their Besoin De Rien, Envie De Toi but inspite of a push by the record company the single never made it in other countries yet, although some cover versions of the song were made. A bit more international acclaim came for the Veronique Jannot & Laurent Voulzy track Desir Desir: quite a lot of airplay in the Benelux market but it never came to a release... We believe that international A&R managers should keep a close watch on the French market. Although it is presently not a breeding ground for international hits, this is likely to change over the next few years. French popular music of this century is based around the "chanson literaire", in which lyrics and theatrical presentation had a major role. Names like Edith Fief, Juliette Greco, Patachou, Maurice Chevalier, George Brassens, Charles Trenet and Zizi Jeanmaire became famous all over the world staying loyal to their French chansons, which could be called serious on one side and very humouristique on the other. From the start of R & R in the 50's the French have been fascinated by this new kind of music, which they started to call "Yeye", but they were never able to play an important role and never launched any real international rock star of their own. The first French rock artists came to fame at the end of 1958 when Daniel Gerard had a superhit with D'ou Viens-Tu Billy Boy? Others followed, often with translations of hits made famous around the globe by people like Paul Anka, Buddy Holly and Neil Sedaka. Most well known from this early period are undoubtedly Sacha Distel and Richard Anthony, but they were quickly dethroned by the absolute R & R king of France Johnny Halliday. Since 1959 Halliday has scored a very impressive number of hits and still today, more than 25 years after he was discovered, he belongs to France's most important artists. He definitely becomes the country most ever publicized celebrity when he falls heavily in love with his female rock counterpart Sylvia Varian. And while real chansonniers like Charles Enrico AAacias (Tterna)...maintaining his important status... Aznavour, Made Laforet and Gilbert Becaud stay loyal to the old song tradition, French pop - acts like Claude Francois, Jacques Dutronc and (Dylan -imitator) Hugues Autrey as well as the real enfant terrible Michel Polnareff dominate the Sixties. But there are also famous ladies like Francoise Hardy, France Gail, Dalida, Sheila, Mireille Mathieu most of whom are still popular today. The most famous rocker of that era is Vince Taylor, a great live performer dressed in leather, who later ends his career in a psychiatric institution, And a special mention should be given also to Serge Gainsbourg who at first is a singer, then becomes a successful songwriter creating hits for many French superstars and then comes with the biggest international French hit ever; his sexual duet with Jane Birkin Je T'aime Moi Non Plus which today still is a favourite for many clubs around the world. Enrico Macias sings positive love songs and becomes known in most European countries. There is one other French artist, who scores big in most countries, "le roi de synthesizer" Jean -Michel Jerre. Not only does he sell millions of copies of each album, he also becomes the first western pop artist to perform in China. Although France has not produced many of these internationally known acts, most artists do not worry about this too much. French audiences are very loyal and looking at the list of most popular artists today, we find many names already famous for more than 20 years. This one is called Citizen Kihn, produced by MATHEW KING KAUFMAN. Greg still has a very passionate love affair with Rock'n Roll, which is clear to me after listening. Maybe you ought to do the same * Hot from the press is the new PRINCE album, Around The World In A Day. Obviously this new purple thing was produced by the master himself. It should be storming up the charts in no time * A new group, a first release. The band - MEMPHIS - consisting of ex -Orange Juice James Kink, the song - You Supply The Roses * And now for some more Royalty: QUEEN. There's a lot happening on this front there! First FREDDIE MERCURY's Mr. Bad Guy- solo album. JOHN DEACON has also begun work on his own debut solo project, which makes him the last member of them to do so! As for BRIAN MAY, he's presently very busy promoting his "BRIAN MAY" custom build guitar (marketed exclusively by Guild) He also has given his name to a new guitar pick-up, available in the USA through Dimartzio. Besides that Mr. MAY is looking at a number of production ventures. As for Mr, TAYLOR, it seems that he's LIVING in studios these days. In the past two month ROGER has been working with DAVID RICHARDS (the resident engineer of QUEEN's Mountain studios) So far he has produced no more than 3 acts, with singles from all of them, due in the next few months. The first product of his producing was released beginning of May, and is the debut single of JIMMY NAIL, entitled Love Don't Live here Anymore (ROSE ROYCE scored a hit with it). Coming up- the 1st TAYLOR/ RICHARDS produced single from Scottish band SIDEWAY LOOK, called Bullet Proof Heart. ROGER is producing more singles for the band. Hold on- that wasn't all, there's more to come, your attention please] TAYLOR & RICHARDS are also in the studio with FEARGAL SHARKEY. As if that isn't enough Roger has been asked by ELTON JOHN to guest on his next album. JOHN DEACON will be guesting on ELTON's LP as well. And now- all four members of QUEEN come back together again end of April, when they undertake a major Australasia tour. Including New Zealand, for the first time ever. Then a few dates in Japan, appearing again at the famed Budokan Theatre. Gee, these boyz are busy, do they need a bit of kip sometimes, or a bit of familylife? Whatever, you're now absolutely up -dated on all the Royal moves * Let's go to ALASKA (the band I mean). They've signed a world wide recording deal with Bronze Records * MUTE records are releasing new material end of ApriVMay from: NICK CAVE &THE BAD SEED, FAD GADGET, DEPECHE MODE, VINCE CLARK, I START COUNTING etc. * CHAZ JANKEL has a new solo album out entitled Looking At You. He also has his own recording studio, East Cot Productions in London * CLIVE GREGSON formerly of ANY TROUBLE had his solo album released through Demon called Strange Persuasions * KEEL has The Right To Rock, that's the title to their new album and don't try to prove them wrong * After their very successful start, with Slipaway, LES ENFANTS had their first album released, titled Touche. Producers were PAT MORAN & JOHN DAVID. The band are about to embark on a headline tour to promote this release * Now let's move a little closer to the DURANIE'S. Everyone knows by now, there's no way stopping them anymore. They do all sort of things, including the titletrack to the new Bond movie, A View To Kill. But, Ahh, not only recording, also composed by them (and Bbnd veteran JOHN BARRY). Producer BERNARD EDWARDS had his hand in this project as well * Bouncing Up is the debut single by a band from Scotland SUGAR SUGAR. Their first steps into studioland was guided by producer Liam Henshall * Okay, for the last time on the subject of TINA TURNER. And here I quote DAVID BOWIE (not the first stranger ming along, I dare Q.14Pat5\ 51 Pree% NA \t)f 16W C - 4
