7 Bana and his life A great poet of India, Banabhatta was born around the 7th century in a village in India. He was born in Pritikuta village, which was situated on the banks of Hiranyavahu. This village used to exist in the district, which is now called, Chhapra. He was born to Chitrabhanu and Rajadevi and his was a family of vatsyayana gotra 7

8 Banas work Bana has written novels like Harsha Charita, Kadambari, Chandikasataka and Parvatiparinaya. It is said that he died before he could finish Harsha Charita and his son, Bhusanbhatta, finished his work. Although, there is not much that can be critically acclaimed about Chandikasataka and Parvatiparinaya but it is said that he used to receive many rewards and accolades from King Harsha, as an appreciation of his work and talent. 8

9 क द बर Bana wrote one of the most famous and earliest novels, known as Kadambari. It is a biographical work of Harsha and Kadambari. A very famous Sanskrit pun about Kadambari is as follows: क द बर रस न आह र अ प न र चत This means that while one reads the Kadambari, one becomes so engrossed in it that even food is forgotten. It is a very famous oratory pun used in Sanskrit. 9

10 क द बर This novel has an extremely intricate plot which is difficult to summarize with concision. Its central thread is that of a romantic attachment (between the hero Chandrapeeda and the heroine Kadambari. However, there are several competing subplots; indeed, the heroine does not make her appearance until past the midpoint.. 10

11 क द बर Many of the characters appear in multiple incarnations, some as humans and some as demigods or animals. The narration proceeds in a succession of nested frames; a large part of it is a retelling by a parrot of a story which was told to it by a sage. The latter story also contains several instances of one character relating a sub-story to another character 11

12 क द बर -श कन श पद श Having completed his education, the prince chandrapida re enter the capital city. There are boisterous celebrations at their return, Shukanasha gives him some worldly advice, after which, Chandrapeeda and Vaishampayana, accompanied by a vast army, set forth to conquer the world. 12

15 Champu-kavya Champu or Champu-Kavya (Devanagari: चम प -क व य) is a genre in Indian Literature originated from Sanskrit. It consists of a mixture of prose (Gadya-Kavya) and poetry passages (Padya-Kavya), with verses interspersed among prose sections. गद यपद यम य क च च चम प इ त अ भध यत 15

28 Kalhana Kalhana was born to a Kashmiri minister, Canpaka, who probably served king Harsa of the Lohara dynasty. His father Champaka was the minister in the court of Harsha of Kashmir It is possible that his birthplace was Parihaspore and his birth would have been very early in the 12th century. It is extremely likely that he was of the Hindu Brahmin caste, suggested in particular by his knowledge of Sanskrit. was the author of Rajatarangini (River of Kings), an account of the history of Kashmir 28

29 Rajatarangini Rajatarangini is a metrical legendary and historical chronicle of the north-western Indian subcontinent, particularly the kings of Kashmir. It was written in Sanskrit by Kashmiri historian Kalhana in the 12th century CE.The work consists of 7826 verses, which are divided into eight books called Tarangas ("waves"). The Rajataringini provides the earliest source on Kashmir that can be labeled as a "historical" text on this region. Although inaccurate in its chronology, the book still provides an invaluable source of information about early Kashmir and its neighbours in the north western parts of the Indian subcontinent. 29

30 Bilhana Bilhana was an 11th-century Kashmiri poet. He is known for his love poem, the Caurapañcāśikā. According to legend, the Brahman Bilhana fell in love with the daughter of King Madanabhirama, Princess Yaminipurnatilaka, and had a secretive love affair. They were discovered, and Bilhana was thrown into prison. While awaiting judgement, he wrote the Caurapâñcâśikâ, a fifty-stanza love poem, not knowing whether he would be sent into exile or die on the gallows. It is unknown what fate Bilhana encountered. Bilhana left his homeland in search of fame and fortune. Wandered trhough Mathura, Kanuj, Prayaga, Varanasi, Somnath, Kalylan and Rameswaram. 30

31 Caurapâñcâśikâ Bilhanas poem was transmitted orally around India. There are several versions, including ones from South India which had a happy ending; the Kashmiri version does not specify what the outcome was. The Caurapâñcâśikâ was first translated into a European language, French, in Subsequently, it was translated several other times. 31

32 Pravarasena Pravarasena (c. 270 c. 330 CE) was the successor of Vindhyashakti, the founder of the Vakataka dynasty. he was the first Vakataka ruler, who called himself a Samrat and conducted wars with the Naga kings. He had become an emperor in his own right, perhaps the only emperor in the dynasty, with his kingdom embracing a good portion of North India and whole of Deccan. He carried his arms to the Narmada in the north and annexed the kingdom of Purika which was being ruled by a king named Sisuka. In any case, he certainly ruled from Bundelkhand in the north (though Dr Mirashi does not accept that he has crossed the Narmada) to the present Andhra Pradesh in the south. 38 Panchatantra stories Despite the fact that the original Sanskrit manuscripts of the Panchatantra are long lost, scholars have composed the Panchatantra based on bits and pieces of information - archaeological, historical, and from commentaries and recensions. The original scriptures may have been lost, but the Sanskrit verses have been reconstructed to form the Panchatantra, as it was in prose and poetries. in Sanskrit language, the stories of the Panchatantra are written by Pandit Vishnu Sharma, 38

39 Panchatantra stories The Panchatantra is an ancient Sanskrit collection of stories, probably first composed around 300 CE (give or take a century or two),though some of its component stories may be much older. The original text is not extant, but the work has been widely revised and translated such that there exist "over 200 versions in more than 50 languages." They became sad but flew away in search of a new lake. 44

Washer man thought to himself, I am working hard. But I am not earning a lot of money. I can t feed my wife and children well. How can I feed this donkey? 45

One night when the donkey in tiger-skin was enjoying his meal in the fields, he heard another donkey braying ( Ee-Aw, Ee-Aw ) in the nearby fields. Listening to this the washer man s donkey couldn t stop himself from singing. He lifted up his head and brayed too. Hearing this the villagers figured out that it was a donkey disguised as tiger and this made them very angry. 50 Hitopadesha Hitopadesa is a collection of short stories. It was originally writtn in Sanskrit. It is very similar to another Sanskrit book named Panchatantra. The book was written many centuries before. Its stories are now well known in different parts of the world. The work has been translated into most of the major languages of the world. An English translation, rendered by Sir Edwin Arnold then principal of Puna College, Pune, India, was published in London in

The tree made a comfortable home for the family of birds who had built their nests on its branch. The birds were living there happily as the tree with its widespread branches sheltered them from scorching sun and heavy rains 55

You would not have to suffer like this. If we can build our nest with small beaks, then why cant you. By God s grace, you have two hands and two legs. Why don t you make a nice shelter for yourselves? 56
