3 REW / FFWD SPZ Gallery Prague Ondřej Vicena Guest: Dominik Gajarský Curator: Christina Gigliotti Every Sunday, artist Ondřej Vicena travels to the Kolbenova flea market in search of obsolete electronics from recent past decades. This ritual personifies the main tendency throughout his work - presenting outdated devices in settings drenched with religious symbolism. Through this direct connection, Vicena incites us to think about our relationship to these relic-like objects, commenting on the way we view, treat and even worship them. For his exhibition in SPZ, Vicena creates a comparative communion between two chosen pieces, symbolic within their own sub-systems, now blending into one another. We are presented with the found artifact, the Walkman one of the first devices, (since then rapidly upgraded and replaced) imported from the West that encouraged individuality and identity through musical choice and expression. The bubbles rise from the buttons into infinity as the sound of Gajarský sdrowned audio track longingly fills our ears and lungs. This personal electronic, among others,gives us a sense of control, a distraction or distance from time passing and our inescapable mortality. The rose, however, being living, decaying nature, reminds us tenderly of both inevitabilities as it sits incased in its glass tomb. 8 BY THE CLICKING AN EYE Czech center Bucharest, Romania Ondřej Vicena Curator: František Zachoval The images created for the Družstevní práce Panorama catalog, a magazine edited by Czech designer Ladislav Sutnar, represent the tendencies of Czech functionalism during the 1930s. They also predict the beginnings of the advertisement photographic methods. The pictures show largely the creation of Sutnar, the tea service of glass laboratory PALEX Kavalier, which consisted of six cups and saucers, a milk jug, sugar bowl and teapot with severely exposed construction handles, then further demonstration of its beverage service is bell shaped goblets for red and white wine, dessert plates or a set of transparent glass plates, which again may remind the technical equipment in the lab. The positive of Sudek s photographs also show a porcelain teapot, which Sutnar designed and created in collaboration with Carlsbad porcelain Epiag, as well as a split plate that perfectly expresses the functionalist understanding of everyday dining. Sutnar drafted for cooperative work also with a set of red lined porcelain that had more than a fancy character because the red line is defining and indicating the edge of the object. The photos also show the cooperative work between Bohumil Južnič and a metal factory for which he designed a set of stainless teel trays and other metal equipment for the Krásná jizba shop. These objects were a celebration of adequate home instruments and mechanization of house. Ondřej Vicena presents his recent collection of modernist dishes as an obsolete concept of utopian living. Grid on the table defines the edge of the collection even though it is only a part of endless field. I have the feeling that increasingly those worlds overlap. Hyperreality is intertwined with reality. I do not know exactly when it happened, but I saw how tourist view burned spoon. 25 NEW MADE RELIGION AM 180 Gallery Prague Ondřej Vicena Material reality produced by man has always been a way of condensed fear of the unknown. This aversion to infinity, the feeling of loneliness in a world governed by the unexplainable laws of being, thoughts in the dark, it took on the character of its materiality in the form of our chosen reality. We can therefore say with certainty that we have built our world to trump what we can not explain, that what we call fear. The reality that is constructed by us confirms our physical presence in this world changing in time. Prehistoric people affirming themselves through their own palm prints on a rock, leaning so hard to the point that withstands time, the immortal point of the stone which will confirm their own existence. Human hand controlled by the human mind, was always trying to compensate the tightness of the world around. Everything that was created by the human mind can be seen as a ritual tool to control earthly forces. Every thing of our everyday reality could preserve some invisible magic charge of ritualistic character. Any ordinary thing is so gifted with the power of religious character.materialized anxiety of existence is contained in all things created by man. 29 HEADCLEANER NIKA Gallery Prague Ondřej Vicena Cassette for head cleaning or Headcleaner is one of the ways how to remove the buildup of particles playback devices physically released from magnetic video tape and audio cassettes. For Ondrej Vicena, this cartridge becomes almost religious, worship worthy object. While it may seem that such an approach has to do with the current retro culture, rather it is a cleansing ritual element that Ondrej is interested in. the head is part of playback devices, which allows recording, erasing and reading data. When clogging the data quality decreases. Cleaning cassette so can become a drug not only for the now old fashioned equipment, but for most of today, data clogged society.
