4 Maiden in the Mirror By Jared Beauty and glamour embrace her Though love and wisdom evade her Just like Narcissus When she looks at her reflection She then becomes spellbound with affection. She strolls down the street of her life Unaware Of the homelessness, poverty, and strife Everywhere With every sunrise She looks in the mirror And falls in love With what appears Through her own eyes She sees a goddess With coralline lips And hair colored chocolate But what lies beneath Her fragile skin? Could it be a kind soul Or a soul full of sin? She believes she is above all The world is about her She is the Narcissistic Woman Whom no one prefers. -4-

6 Tragedy Sings By Elise Minor-keyed and painfully did Melpomene croak about The Great Depression, How lachrymose her eyes were as she slipped by families yearning for the stalest of crumbs. How glossy her irises were when she cried cerulean tears from her auburn eyes. Her forehead wrinkled in immense thought, Trying to figure out why the hungry economy stole and ate every penny off these mortals plates. Maniacally the greedy economy snickered behind the human s backs. Oh how these bandits secretly roamed the world. How emphatically these humans heard Melpomene s tragic song of despair. How these mortals wished they could get the melody out of their heads. How they wished Thalia would sing instead. The deities on Olympus above Looked down on Prometheus s children with such sorrow, A sorrow that entered their bodies and transformed into generosity. Demeter looked down at the dusty, perished roads with disgust, And decided that life needed to be planted. Aphrodite saw bitter, gelid hearts and souls in these humans, And decided that love shall be granted. Hermes spotted laughless faces, And put delight and hope in mortals of all races. Zeus saw miseries gnawing at the flesh of youth and the grown, And slain them all Before the hideous swarm had known. Now the people were free from their chains of pain and went onwards to success. Melpomene s harmony was now silent. She had hushed after the problems were solved. The Muse was on her way to another struggle, To sing another hurtful song. *Melpomene- Muse of Tragedy *Thalia-Muse of Comedy -6-

8 Fought for Naught Thousands of bodies mangled and ripped, Lay in the dust There were cries of pain, as the scarlet blood dripped. Oh how I cried! Oh how I sobbed! The war that was fought for naught. All the lives lost forever, Some half lived, Gone because of foolhardy action. Oh how I cried! Oh how I sobbed! The war that was fought for naught. Ares took many, And Zeus darkened the sky in anger, But the mighty chariot of death raced on. Oh how I cried! Oh how I sobbed! The war that was fought for naught. And as the last young soul died, As his breath slipped away, I realized what I had begun and quietly, I cried. -8-

10 Just A Split S econd By Olivia This young swimmer is a relentless competitor With engrossed, spellbound spectators He constantly strives to trounce his time Believing he is a tremendous inspiration Compare him to the winged Nike The goddess of victory And companion of gray-eyed Athena The majestic goddess of wisdom When he fervently won his eight medallions His excided mom rooting for him on the deck Hot tears running down her jaws She exclaimed I m proud of you my son! He is as swift as a humming bird scavenging for nectar As lofty as a brown bear standing six feet high He has the sharp spectacles of a bald eagle Rapidly and quietly hunting for its meal A muscular glistening body as bulky as a mountain lion Having its muscles ripple smoothly under its groomed pelt And a sturdy kick that would propel him through a violent storm Practicing every week of his life to join powerful Olympic athletes One gleeful, un-knowledgeable night He smoked the tinted, addicting tonic in a glass pipe Some people still view his as a super hero While some categorize him as a villain This one dim-witted error resulted in The USA Committee crowned him with a dunce hat Kellogg s, the giant, ripped off his face from the boxes When these restless events occurred The red-eyed Phelps swore This event won t happen again Instead of concentrating on all his flaws Tally all of his strengths and accomplishments Calculate the percentage of his rights and wrongs Imagine him as the fastest swimmer in HISTORY! That one imperfection Shouldn t erase the enthusiasm And may that fact be known to every nation -10-
