2 Predavanja skupaj s predmetom Umetnost starega veka II tvorijo celoto. In combination with its self-contained but complementary sequel, this B.A. class constitutes the first half of the two-part Period Introduction Overview dedicated to the art and architecture of the Ancient World, in which first-year students attain basic knowledge of the most characteristic artistic accomplishments of Ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations, along with the Bronze-Age cultures of the Aegean, prior to being introduced to the earlier periods of Greek Art spanning between its Dark-Age beginnings and the Classical Period. The second-year course content in turn covers the most remarkable and in part, but not entirely, Classically-inspired stylistic and iconographic innovations that have (keeping pace with the continually increasing number of new artistic tasks and changing contexts of production and reception) characterized the ever more diversified visual culture of the Hellenistic monarchies and the later Roman Empire. Before and After the Emergence of Greek Art The course is introduced by a rigorously selective survey of architecture, sculpture and painting within the two earliest ancient civilizations, which primarily focuses on those from among their pioneering achievements that had at a later stage profoundly affected the emergence of distinctively Greek figurative arts. Following upon a brief introduction to the Bronze Age Aegean cultures (with particular stress on the so-called Minoan and Mycenaean Art), the remaining sections of this onesemester class logically center around the art of Greece from the Proto-Geometric and Geometric periods through the especially vigorous Archaic epoch paving the way for the fifth-century Classical style, which was (first and foremost in Athens) distinguished by the introduction of a number of not only groundbreaking but also astoundingly enduring representational paradigms that have throughout (and beyond) the Mediterranean basin determined the subsequent evolution of
3 the shared Graeco-Roman artistic koine. (And the latter has in turn also provided the obvious point of departure for all later Classical revivals that left, especially in the Early-Modern period, an indelible mark on the history of visual arts in Western Europe). Temeljni literatura in viri / Readings: H. FRANKFORT: The Art and Architecture of the Ancient Orient, New Haven London: Yale University Press, W. S. SMITH: The Art and Architecture of Ancient Egypt, New Haven London: Yale University Press, J. G. PEDLEY: Greek Art and Archaeology, Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, M. ROBERTSON: A History of Greek Art, 1-2, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, A. STEWART: Greek Sculpture, 1-2, New Haven London: Yale University Press, Cilji in kompetence: Predmet omogoča študentom: seznanjanje s ključnimi pojavnimi oblikami umetnostnega ustvarjanja starih civilizacij bližnjega vzhoda in egejskih kultur bronaste dobe ter pregledno poznavanje najpomembnejših stvaritev starejše grške umetnosti do klasične dobe, razumevanje zgodovinskih okoliščin, ki so pogojevale širjenje umetnostnih dosežkov starih civilizacij bronaste in zgodnje železne dobe po celotnem Sredozemlju vključno s podalpskim zaledjem severnega Jadrana, zavedanje o vidni vlogi, ki so jo slogovni, vsebinski in idejni vplivi starih kultur bližnjega vzhoda in vzhodnega Sredozemlja v njenem formativnem obdobju odigrali pri izoblikovanju temeljnih značilnosti antične grške umetnosti. Objectives and competences: This B.A. course aims at: introducing students to the key artistic innovations (and most outstanding surviving monuments) of the ancient civilizations of the Near East, the Levant, and the Aegean as well as at selectively surveying the most remarkable early stages of Greek art up to the Classical period; enhancing students understanding of specific historical circumstances underlying the diffusion of artistic achievements of the most advanced Bronze- and Iron-Age cultures throughout the Mediterranean basin, including the sub-alpine hinterland of the northern Adriatic coast (viz. the national territory of the present-day Republic of Slovenia); fostering students awareness of the arguably seminal role played in terms of style and iconography no less than in the realm of ideas by the impact of the foremost Near-Eastern and Levantine civilizations on some of the fundamental traits of ancient Greek art during its formative period.
4 Predvideni študijski rezultati: Študent mora prepoznati glavne umetnostne spomenike, jih na podlagi natančnega opazovanja slogovno opredeliti ter jih umestiti v ustrezni zgodovinski kontekst. Temeljno je osnovno poznavanje umetnostnih pojavov ključnih obdobij in vodilnih osebnosti (arhitektov, kiparjev in slikarjev ter njihovih naročnikov in občinstva). Pridobljeno osnovno znanje in razumevanje temeljnih interpretativnih postopkov študentke in študenti sproti preverjajo in poglabljajo ob konkretnih spomenikih ter ob postopnem seznanjanju s temeljno znanstveno literaturo. Smisel študija ni mehanično učenje»enciklopedičnih podatkov«, ampak uporaba in preverjanje temeljnih spoznanj na raznolikih primerkih. Študentke in študente se spodbuja k kritični presoji hipotez v prebrani literaturi. krepitev percepcijskih spretnosti in umetnostnozgodovinskih ekdotičnih metod ob analizi spomenikov vizualne kulture, spretnost uporabe sekundarnih in primarnih virov za študij zgodovine umetnosti starega veka Intended learning outcomes: Students are expected to memorize a representative selection of key monuments of architecture, sculpture, painting and decorative arts, while simultaneously attaining rudimentary descriptive skills of closely observed stylistic analysis as well as becoming aware of the crucial importance of assessing each individual artwork s form and content within its own specific historical context. Particular emphasis is placed on the course participants familiarization with the patrimony dating from the periods of intense artistic innovation and on highlighting crucial contributions of the most outstanding personalities architects, sculptors, and painters no less than their patrons and audiences. While gradually absorbing the fundamental factual data regarding specific monuments under consideration (and concomitantly becoming familiar with the gist of current scholarship on the subject), students are, moreover, encouraged to critically reflect upon the underlying premises of some of the basic interpretive approaches of art history. This firstlevel course does therefore not merely aim at subjecting undergraduates to mechanical memorization but rather seeks to foster reasoned application of thus acquired basic knowledge to historically better founded understanding of architectures and artifacts from the period under investigation. Within the given limits, B.A. students will accordingly also be introduced to critical reading of scholarly publications, which shall in turn not only strengthen their awareness of the respective evidential values of primary and secondary sources for the study of the art and architecture of the Ancient World, but also advance their grasp of those discipline-specific methods that are the foundation of scholarly grounded interpretation of the distinctive features of any other past or present visual culture.
