1 NOTHING BAD WILL HAPPEN Featured artists: 1 Part of this year's Plymouth Art Weekender, 'Nothing Bad Will Happen' is a student-led group show, featuring work by selected 3rd year students studying on BA (Hons) Fine Art programme at Plymouth College of Art. The show aims to compile work that otherwise would not have been shown at a tutorial, assessment or End of Year Show - presenting work made outside the realms of academic criteria. Some pieces could be seen as a continuation of project work started in college during the students' first and second year, while other work could be perceived as a response to the public as commercial work. Some is a reaction to personal events in the artists' lives while others engage on global matters. This exhibition aims to examine how much the Fine Art degree impacts the student's work and process. 2 2 Grace WAGSTAFF Everything Is Alright Pencil, biro, charcoal, water based pens The next year of my life is very important; it s the last year of my degree and I have to decide what to do next. These drawings individually are detailed and are almost perfect but, when put together there is chaos; the drawings are jumbled and do not make sense. This symbolises the chaotic nature of my life. I m trying to make everything alright but somehow it s not coming together just yet. Contact: g.wagstaff@hotmail.com Website: Sam TURNER Form Of A Cyclical Construct Found containers and zip ties Stacking and arranging empty containers so to be inefficient with space feels absurd or irrational, though there is an element of monumentalisation within the process. A lot of design, thought and work has gone into producing the containers but they inevitably end up in the bin. Some can and may be recycled or reused - to deny their ultimate fate, or to intercept and pause it, gives a chance to see them for what they are. They are hollow sculptures; monuments or totems of our society. Their emptiness holds unlimited potentials but is confined by its form and simply building upon it, further expresses something from its design and manufacturing that can be lost in its everyday use. 3 3 Rebecca WILLIAMS Rückkehrunruhe and Altschmerz (work in progress) Acrylic on canvas These paintings together represent the two fluctuating moods I can find myself in daily. From days of joy, happiness and being able to see hope and promise in the world. To days consumed by anxiety and depression that leave me in a constant struggle of decisions and doubt. Rückkehrunruhe - The feeling of returning home after an immersive trip only to find it fading rapidly from your awareness. The inspiration for this comes from an internet blog post as well as my own love for nature and to be surrounded by things outside our normal lives. This painting is a reminder to enjoy the little things in life. To take your headphones out once in a while and look up, just take in your surroundings in a moment of peace. and we'd wave through the clouds on a hot day. What if birds grew grass and the ground grew feathers. What if flowers were as tall as trees and trees and small as flowers.' Altschmerz - Weariness with the same old issues that you've always had - the same boring flaws and anxieties that you've been gnawing on for years. For this painting I have been looking at the quantum multiverse theory whereby a new timeline or universe is created when a diversion of events occurs. This is an appeal to how sufferers of mental illness such anxiety, depression and PTSD battle difficult choices and thoughts to find balance in their lives. 4 4 Sasha REEVE For The Things We See Now Will Soon Be Gone Series of A4 photographs From a very young age, I have been afraid of my father losing his battle with his illness. For as long as I can remember, he has been sick and suffering. This summer - in July - my world was turned upside down when my mum suffered a heart attack and it really shook me emotionally. It has really made me think about what life would be like if I lost either of them and what I would do without them in my life. I've taken very natural pictures of my mum and dad doing regular things that they like to do and that bring them genuine joy such as driving for my mum and attending dog shows as they're both dog lovers. These images are unedited and the same as when I took them as I would like to show that editing and lighting shouldn't always be needed to create beautiful images. I have been raised to never take things for granted but I have been - I took the most important people in my life for granted and I just want to capture their love and their personalities through my camera. What I am mostly trying to achieve is preservation - I'm trying to show that the things you take for granted the most are often the things you miss the most when they're gone. Stuffed rat My practice is varied but mainly combines photo collage and text to comment on what is happening in the world today. I am interested in the relationship between art, politics and activism - the subject of my degree dissertation. Occupy - reflects concerns about the expansion of surveillance and the curtailing of civil liberties, particularly in response to the US s Global War on Terror. Birds over Syria, New World Order, and Collateral Damage highlight the deaths and suffering being inflicted upon the people of the Middle East by the US, UK and their allies. No Surrender is a rallying call and also a memorial to the boxer Muhammad Ali, who died earlier this year. Fame is about identity, mortality and our 15 minutes in the spotlight. 6 6 Vesislava ZHELEVA Gurgurat E-book, text I have taken a restructured text by the Bulgarian writer Svetlozar Igov. He rewrote some well-known Bulgarian proverbs, changing key words to gurgur. Gurgur is a word of a dialect with many definitions. My intervention with the text is called translit (transliteration) replacing the Cyrillic alphabet letters with Latin alphabet letters. This work, exhibited in the Bulgarian speaking environment would have a different effect in comparison to any other language environment. Back in my country ever since technology took over the common household, the result of transliteration produced many opponents, arguing the importance of keep writing in Cyrillic, in order to preserve the Bulgarian literacy and identity. By showing Gurgurat here in England I am hoping to see how much of an interest will the work trigger. Will a non-bulgarian speaking person recognise or even bother to spend time looking for familiarity in the unknown text? Panoramic Images Gone Wrong Purposely: N1 Mum; Study Photographs, various sizes. This project began as a study of my mum, inspired partly by David Hockney s polaroid collages. I started by testing the use and misuse of the present day mobile technology and the photo regimes on smart phones, such as panoramic image and 360 image. I took portraiture images of my mum with these photo regimes, which came out destroyed. I continued purposely to look for this destroyed effect. I then started working on the images by drawing onto the prints, filling the background and sticking silver foil on some. This will be going on for some time, until I reach a satisfying outcome.
