Using high quality imagery to link in with social or political upheaval to do with the era of the album covers. Using MRI scans, influences from Lennart and Gunther, medical imagery, highlight the parts that connect with music. If can incorporate Gunther style of sculpture work, the fine detail into a cover, maybe 3D printing. MIND MAP How music effects our emotions, play on love getting hurt as the song links into struggles within life. Colour code each segment of the brain, different colours link into different movements and how I perceive them as a colour. Listen to the song and pick out colours, or watch on serato and which colours coordinate with segments of the song. Looking into our brain and how music effects it, does it create patterns, that interlink with emotions. Research studies into the gulf war and who that effected why and when. Decide whether a lyric needs to be used as there albums are prominently image based.
INFLUENCES Lennart Nilsson a innovator in photography and the human body up close. Capturing outstanding images of never seen before happenings. Gunther Von Haynes a man of science, sculpting interact works of art, turning science into art. Robert Del Naja massive attacks founding member of massive attack and graffiti artist. Heavily influences there artwork.
ORIGINAL COVERS 12'' Record The 12 record sleeve was the album of which Unfinished Sympathy appeared on. There logo or brand image was orientated around this warning symbol or icon. Symbolises the flame through danger and the use of the red. The logo comes from and old album from a band called stiff little fingers. Robert Del Naja also known as 3D, was the creator of the artwork that massive attack produced. He was heavily influenced by social and political situations that where relevant at the time of release. Therefore turning the band into this brand having such a recognisable logo was inspirational and very clever.
ORIGINAL COVERS CD Album The album cover specifically for the tune Unfinished Sympathy, was again created by Robert Del Naja one of massive attacks founding members. At the time of the release it was leading up to the first gulf war, the attacks on Iraq at the time caused a lot of controversy. Robert wanted to create something that would symbolize the medical hand and the nature of what comes with that. Having the hand covered in oil as if in surrender with a bandage on it, mimicking one of the medical hazard symbols, which linked in with there original band logo. Will notice they have removed the word attack from the album cover, as to not highlight towards what was happening at the time of the release.
I know that I've been mad in love before And how it could be with you Really hurt me baby, really hurt me baby How can have a day without a night You're the book that I have opened And now I've got to know much more The curiousness of your potential kiss UNFINISHED SYMPATHY LYRICS Has got my mind and body aching Really hurt me baby, really hurt me baby How can you have a day without a night You're the book that I have opened And now I've got to know much more Like a soul without a mind In a body without a heart I'm missing every part
IDEA ONE
First idea was to see how our brain reacts to emotions and music. Have decided to source high quality images or MRI scans & brain scans, and then research into what parts of your brain are connected to music and why, if they are directly or indirectly connected to certain emotions. To show that through highlighting those parts of the brain using a colour code system. The colours would relate to what emotions they relate to, or what we perceive colours and emotions to be. Want to connect two parts of the brain that would work together when listening to music, one emotional and the other relating to sounds or movement. To be able to display a side on view of this on either side of the cover. Don t want to take away from Massive Attacks previous covers. There artwork has always been high quality imagery, digitally changed or enhanced to provide a message an link to the album.
Lennart Nilsson was a famous photojournalist, even a pioneer. He was ground-breaking in his field of work, as not only a photographer but a scientist come explorer. Making the invisible visible. The idea behind the picture was always crucial. A good photograph is a photograph that shows something no one has seen before. His imagery is so powerful and of the highest quality, want to resonate that through my covers using the best images I can source. Unfortunately he doesn t have INFLUENCES any images of an MRI scan or of a humans brain. Gunther Von Hagens is a German anatomist and artist. He is well known for dissecting the human body on live lectures. He is a man of science, you can see this through his art. He sculpts realistic human bodies in varying positions to show the power of the human body and what makes us. Took interest in his work orientating around veins. He created an arm and a heart out of what would appear to be veins. They where very interact pieces. He influenced the idea of utilising the strength of the human body and showing that off, what is more powerful than the humans brain, an how it reacts to certain noises and movements. The links below are of Lennart Nilsson and Gunther Von Hagens works. exhibitions/current_exhibitions.html
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Two main images to choose from, sourced from the internet. One was of the top view of the brain, this would make it harder to place the sections of the brain relating to the emotions and music. The second of the two images, was a side on view of the MRI. This would allow me to place the separate segments in the right place, according to there reactions with music.
Starting with the second image, the side on view of the brain, researched into emotional connections with the brain, and what parts would be active with certain ones, also researched which segments of the brain react with music, an whether they go hand in hand together. As want to try and find two parts that connect, so I can link them in on either side of the album cover, one either being emotion and the other an reaction, or same outcomes of both, if cannot find sections that connect. IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Placing the image into Photoshop. Using the magic eraser tool, tried to erase the black background as wanted a white transparent one to work with. As can see I erased the inner parts, which was not intended.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT After undoing the previous work the magic eraser had done, just used the eraser and zoomed in close to try and create a round shape and keep the integrity of the original image. Then in-putted this into Illustrator so could trace around the segments and highlight them according to music.
RESEARCH
Sourced this research, which explains which parts of the brain react to which parts of music. Whether this be through reactions, or movements. It allowed me to be able to learn about the segments and which ones would work together to create a song. One dance and one reaction, one memory and one reaction, they work hand in hand. Very useful research to obtain. IMAGE ONE RESEARCH
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT This is the Hippo-campus, a memory based segment helping us remember tunes and words, those experiences we hold connected to that piece of music. This is the Auditory Cortex. This allows us to analysis the tones of the music.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Highlighted all the segments in red to start with so can see each one. Did this on separate images to piece together an idea. This is the Cerebellum, a movement section, relating to dancing, connection to emotions. This is the Visual Cortex, this aids the ability to read music and controls own movements.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT This is the Sensory Cortex. Connected with musicians and playing of an instrument, the tapping or movements that are connected with that. This is the Nucleus Accumbus, this is the segment that is directly connected with our emotional responses to music.
COLOUR CONNECTION
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT After selecting which segments wanted to work with and highlight, then had to pair each section to a colour. Hippo-campus is a memory based segment, green is related to growth and development linking into memory. The Auditory cortex our analysis of a tune, the breaks, the beat and speed. Yellow links into intuition and imagination, being able to remember that pattern of the tune.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT The Sensory cortex is related to the playing of an instrument, have linked this in with the colour purple to show the intelligence and creativity, to have such a skill. The Nucleus Accumbus the segment directly connected with a person emotions. Linking into the love aspect of the song, and how she is hurt or betrayed by the other emotions involved.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT The Cerebellum connected to the emotional reactions we have and the physical movements associated. Red is linked in with emotions and a range of them from love to anger to fear. The Visual cortex links into the reading of music, and the persons movements connected. Showing how logic and self confidence play a part, linking this into the colour blue.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Paired them together using the colours and there meanings, as-well as the link between the reaction and the movement. Paired them together using the colours and there meanings, as-well as the link between the reaction and the movement.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Paired them together using the colours and there meanings, as-well as the link between the reaction and the movement. Then altered the transparency of the MRI scan, wanted to see the contrast between whether I wanted the segment to be more prominent or the scan itself.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT The colour is more prevalent therefore highlighting the segment and showing the connection better. May change the background colour or adjust the transparency levels a but more so the scan isn t so lost, but have the colours more prominent than the scan.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Pieced all the segments together in one image to see what the outcome would be like. Reflected the images and placed them back to back. Will highlight some and leave others out to create that connection between music and emotions.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Decided to take out the MRI scan and just leave the colours and the segments to show. Need to arrange to create a pattern and some sense of connection across the pages. Aligned the segments across the centre of the page. Each one linking to the next through emotion and musical connections.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT The segments stand out more against the white contrast of the background. Have made each segment bigger an moved them apart. Placed each one of the transparent heads, reflecting each connection. Shall bring them closer together as feel there is to much white space between, which then lack the connection links to each image.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Aligned the sets of heads closer.. Aligned the set of heads side by side facing to the left.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Aligned the set of heads side by side facing to the right. Then alternated each of the facing heads aligned them in threes and put them together.
IMAGE ONE DEVELOPMENT Then alternated each of the facing heads aligned them in threes and put them together.
INSERTS
INSERT DEVELOPMENT Had to create an insert that would sit inside the record sleeve. It could contain up to hundred and forty characters to describe the album cover and your ideas. Have done that on a minimal scope. This then follows the rest of the inserts created giving a nice flow between the record covers. Just described the connection between our emotions within music and how that effects our brain. The insert is double sided, with the pattern of the segments reflected onto the back.
