De belangrijkste reden was dat ik erg van science fiction boeken houdt. Ik heb dit boek een aantal jaar geleden gelezen en toen vond ik het al erg leuk. Ik was alweer vergeten waar het boek precies over ging, dus ik besloot het weer te lezen. Ik vond het boek de tweede keer nog leuker. Ik denk dat dit komt omdat ik het Engels beter beheers en dus meer begrijp van het verhaal. "And God created man in His own image. And God decreed that man should have one body, one head, two arms and two legs: that each arm should be jointed in two plces and end in one hand: that each hand should have four fingers and one thumb: that each finger should bear a flat finger-nail. Then God created woman, also, and in the same image, but with these differences, according to her nature: her voice should be of a higher pitch than a man's: she should grow no beard: she should have two breasts..." Eerste recensie Review by Adam-Troy Castro It is some time hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of years after an atomic war shattered civilization and left large parts of the world uninhabitable. Among the rural people of what used to be Newfoundland, the danger of mutation has led to a strict and ruthless definition of what constitutes humanity. Any deviation from the norm is considered an abomination. If livestock, it is slaughtered. Humans are banished to the barbarous lands known as the Fringes. David Strorm is a young boy being raised by a religious-zealot father who takes the commandments against mutation even more seriously than his society requires. Dad is such a meanie that when his sisterin-law appears, begging for the life of a baby whose mutation she considers slight, he banishes her from his sight with a loud ringing sermon about her wickedness. David, a secret telepath who shares thoughtcommunication with several others his own age, knows his survival depends on his father never being allowed to find out what he is. One day in early childhood, David meets a young girl named Sophie, and discovers she's hiding an extra toe. He likes her, so he promises to keep her secret. 2 might be his own. Then his younger sister Petra is born and she has a mutation so powerful it endangers David and his telepath friends... A primal tale made rich in the telling A child growing up in a repressive, unloving family discovers that he has powers that make him special, powers that the normal people who oppress him refuse to tolerate or understand. He finds a new home among people as special as himself, who take him away from his unhappy past into a place where he can be appreciated and loved. It's a basic plot outline which has long proven irresistible to readers of fantasy and science fiction, as it speaks with such eloquence to the inner (and sometimes outer) geek in all of us. It drives Harry Potter, it drives the X-Men, and it has driven any number of other stories, by authors throughout the history of the field, about children who find out they are secretly royalty or extraterrestrials or the next stage in Mankind's evolution. There wasn't anything startling about it even in 1955, when Wyndham wrote this slim but evocative novel. The poetry was of course in the details. Wyndham was never a writer of grand innovative ideas; his other novels include a thriller about an island infested with spiders, and another about an invasion by carnivorous trees, ideas so hackneyed on the face of them that plot synopses make his work sound as pedestrian as science fiction ever gets. Wyndham's skill lay in taking such ideas and treating them with a sobriety and a deliberate sense of pace that made them seem real on the printed page. In The Chrysalids, the friendship between the children David and Sophie, forged upon his discovery of the sixth toe that would doom her if publicly revealed, is both subtle and real. The religious fundamentalism that makes David's father such a prig may be shared by his neighbors, but even they believe him to be too much of a humorless fanatic for their tastes. And there's one marvelous, haunting scene that lodges in the memory: a mother's futile pleas for her baby, whose mutation is described only as "such a little thing," and which is never revealed to either David or the reader. The Chrysalids grows downright unnerving in its final sections, when the rescuers from New Zealand not only massacre David's pursuers in a truly unnerving use of superior technology, but then spend a couple of pages explaining at length why this was just another justified example of evolution in action. But by that point the deus ex machina has blotted the book with ordinariness. What sticks is the portrait of a town rendered a prison by its rigid definition of humanity, and the plight of a little girl whose life depends on the concealment of an extra toe. Re-Birth was one of the first science fiction novels I read as a youth, and several times tempted me to take a piggy census. Returning to it now, more than 30 years later, I find that I remember vast parts of it with perfect clarity. As a book to kindle the joy of reading science fiction, you can certainly do much worse. 3 blasphemy before God who had fashioned man in his own image and must be dealt with immediately before such evil could propagate and spread. Young David knew the words by heart for they were reinforced daily by his evangelical father, yet how could his friend Sophie be considered evil?? Sure she had a sixth toe on each foot, but certainly she was no threat to anyone. But when her abnormality was discovered, David soon learned to what extent his society would go in these cases. To make matters worse he now began to find he had an invisible deviation himself, telepathic powers. Soon David and his new friends, fellow "picture talkers," would live in fear of their lives, persecuted and hunted by family and friends. Where could they go but to the Fringes, the place where abominations like themselves escaped to? Would they find peace and acceptance there? Post disaster stories are perhaps one of the most worked subgenres in science fiction. From H.G. Wells' THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME, to Walter Miller's classic A CANTICLE FOR LIEBOWITZ, to David Brin's recently filmed THE POSTMAN, we seem to be fascinated with man's abilities/inabilities to cope with what nature or himself brings to pass. Usually these tales are centred around humankind's attempts to find a sense of self and society amongst chaos and are heavily salted with religious overtones, to this extent RE- BIRTH is no different. The microcosm we are presented with is a highly evangelical society where even the deviants, much to our protagonist's chagrin, have their own spiritual dogma. In many ways this story is a condemnation of religious extremism, yet surprisingly even the most enlightened thinkers of the story are monotheistic. That's not to say that enlightened thinkers have to be atheists, but I marveled at the fact that in a virtually destroyed world no one seemed to even question the existence of a God. What really sets this book apart from the others I've read is that it's from the perspective of children, immature beings who know the words being preached to them, but who are incapable of applying their meanings to their innocent worlds. This is a very interesting and well written story. And even though it's written in the typical austere English style, it deserves the label, "classic." Samenvatting De bevolking van Waknuk heeft een kernoorlog overleefd. De mensen herinneren zich dit nauwelijsk meer en noemen die periode de Tribulation (rampspoed), een tijd waarin de mensen moesten lijden voor hun zonden. Ook al was deze oorlog een tijd geleden, de nucleaire straling besmet nog steeds de wereld buiten de kleine gemeenschap van Waknuk. Als er ook maar enig bewijs van besmetting wordt gevonden binnen Waknuk dan wordt de besmette plant, het besmette dier of de besmette mens direct afgevoerd. Het verhaal draait om de verteller, David Strorm. Hij heeft een kleine groep vrienden die allemaal een ESP (extrasensory perception = buitenzintuiglijke waarneming) hebben en een streng religieuze familie. Als kind leert David over de strenge moraal van zijn gemeenschap: De norm is God's wil en De duivel is de vader van afwijkingen. Dit hield in dat alle levende dingen planten, dieren, mensen vernield moesten worden als ze afweken van de norm. Daid's vader, Joseph Strorm, werd gezien als leider in deze beweging. Waknuk had geluk, omdat het ver weg lag van de plekken die het ergst waren getroffen door de kernoorlog. De oude generaties in Waknuk zijn altijd erg voorzichtig geweest, wat resulteerde in erg weinig afwijkingen door de straling. Alle afwijkingen die toch verschenen werden vernield, mensen werden verbannen naar de Fringes, een land meer naar het zuiden. Pagina 3 van 6

4 In het begin van het verhaal ontmoet David Sophie Wender. Hij komt erachter dat ze een fysieke afwijking heeft, namelijk zes tenen aan elke voet. Beide zij en haar familie moeten vluchten. Ze worden gevangen en verbannen naar de Fringes. David vindt het moeilijk te zich neer te leggen bij de wetten van zijn maatschappij. Dit probleem wordt nog erger als zijn tante zelfmoord pleegt, omdat ze een afwijkende baby baardde. David is ook bezorgd voor zijn eigen veiligheid, omdat hij en zijn groep ESP vrienden ook afwijkend zijn. Ze kunnen door middel van telepathie met elkaar communiceren. Dit is natuurlijk ook niet conform Waknuk's idee van de norm. Ook al kunnen ze hun afwijking goed verbergen, de geboorte van David's zusje, Petra, zorgt voor veel problemen. Ze is nog klein en kan haar krachten nog niet te beheersen. Er gebeurd iets waardoor Petra, David en zijn liefje, Rosalind, worden ontdekt. Ze worden afwijkend verklaard en verbannen. Ze moeten naar de Fringes vluchten, waar ze achtervolgd worden door de mensen uit Waknuk, zelfs door David's vader. In de Fringes worden ze gevangen door de afwijkende bevolking. De hele tijd is Petra in contact gebleven met een verre beschaving in Nieuw Zeeland (Sealand). Deze mensen, die allemaal telepathisch zijn, redden de gevangenen in het heetst van de strijd tussen Waknuk en Fringes mensen. David, Petra en Rosalind ontsnappen per helicopter naar Nieuw Zeeland. Mijn mening Ik vind het boek ontzettend leuk en kijk er naar uit om andere boeken van deze auteur te lezen. Ik hoop ook dat dit boek ooit zal worden verfilmd. Thema's Het meest belangrijke thema in dit boek is de tekortkomingen van onszelf en de maatschappij. In dit boek wordt gezegd dat de oude mensen (onze generatie) tot een eind zijn gekomen door een kernoorlog. Dat geeft wel stof tot nadenken, omdat een kernoorlog niet zo ver weg is als het lijkt. En de gevolgen er van zouden catastrofaal kunnen zijn. Het verschil tussen de een en de ander is ook een erg belangrijk thema. Er bestaat een norm en als je niet normaal bent, dan wordt je verbannen of vermoord. Dit is ook vergelijkbaar met onze eigen wereld, omdat racisme, xenofobie en genocide nog steeds voorkomen. Gebeurtenissen De belangrijkste gebeurtenis in het boek is wanneer de anderen erachter komen dat David en zijn vrienden telepathie gebruiken. Een andere belangrijke gebeurtenis is wanneer David uitvindt dat zijn zusje ook telepathisch is, maar veel sterker dan hij en zijn vrienden. Daarom worden ze ook ontdekt. Als Petra aangevallen wordt rent de hele groep richting het bosje waar ze in zit. Daar komen natuurlijk vragen van. Twee personen uit de groep worden gearresteerd en gemarteld. David, Rosalind en Petra worden achtervolgd en Petra maakt telepathisch contact met een vrouw uit Nieuw Zeeland. Het is een race tegen de tijd, maar met de hulp van de Nieuw Zeelandse vrouw lukt het. Personages Er zijn twee soorten personages in het boek. De telepathische groep die gedachtenplaatjes kan maken en de anderen. David hoort bij de eerste groep, maar zijn familie is heel erg tegen mensen die van de norm deviëren. Zijn jongere zus Petra hoort ook bij de eerste groep. Katherine: Telepathisch, wordt gemarteld en verraadt haar groep. Sealand women: Vrouw uit Nieuw Zeeland, redt de telepathische groep door contact te hebben met Petra. Sally: Katherine's buurvrouw. Harriet: David's tante. Had drie abnormale kinderen. Mark: Woont ver weg van de rest. Jeroma: Hij ontdekt de groep als eerst. Taalgebruik Het taalgebruik is niet erg ingewikkeld, maar in sommige delen wel ouderwets. Het verhaal leest makkelijk weg en dat is een van de redenen waarom ik dit boek zo leuk vind. Als je niet zo goed bent in Engels is dit boek nog steeds goed te begrijpen. Ik vind dat de auteur hiervoor een compliment verdiend, omdat als je gemakkelijke taal gebruikt het verhaal snel kinderachtig kan lijken, maar dit verhaal blijft erg volwassen. Een deel van de review is dan ook: the inspector. In het begin van het boek weet je nog weinig van Waknuk en de gebruiken. Als de spanning wordt opgebouwd krijg je te weten dat David anders is dan de rest en dat er meer zijn zoals hem. Je begrijpt meteen wat de gevolgen zijn voor hen als iemand er achter zou komen. Dan gebeurt het onvermijdelijke en Waknuk ontdekt de groep en hun abnormaliteit. Een ontzettend spannende achtervolging volgt. Gelukkig komt de Nieuw Zeelandse vrouw tot hun redding en eindigt het verhaal positief. Ze voelen zich geaccepteerd en op hun plaats in hun nieuwe omgeving. Je blijft alleen denken aan Michael: zal hij ooit naar Nieuw Zeeland komen? Ik hoop het wel.
