I passed my maths exam last week, though. Ben: You should be proud of that! Richard: But next week, I have another exam: History! Ben: Don t worry about school too much, will you? Thanks for phoning! Nicky: Here s our next caller. Hello? Who s on Line 2? Sarah: Hi, it s Sarah from Sheffield. Nicky: Hi Sarah. Sarah: Hi Nicky. Nicky: What do you get stressed about, Sarah? Sarah: It s my mobile phone. I don t like it when my phone has no battery and when I can t find my keys! Nicky: Oh I hate that too! Time for one more caller, Ben. Ben: Yes! Who s on Line 3? Pippa: Hi! This is Pippa from Bristol. Ben: Hi Pippa. What makes you stressed? Pippa: Oh it s my brother. Yesterday I arrived home from school and I was hungry. But there were no chocolate biscuits in the cupboard. My brother eats everything! Ben: Oh dear! You should hide the biscuits, Pippa. Pippa: Good idea! And today I m stressed because the wifi isn t working at home. Ben: The internet? Pippa: Yes. I can t go online. I m angry about that too! 9
10 Ben: Who fixes things in your house, Pippa? Pippa: Actually, my brother fixes the internet. He s really good with computers. So I guess we ll be friends again. Ben: That s good to hear! Thanks for calling, Pippa! TRACK 7: CROWN NEWS Nicky: In CROWN you can read about robots. A bank in Japan has robot receptionists. Robots are also in people s houses doing the jobs we hate. They can clean, they can do the washing up and even cook your dinner! Ben: Wow! Nicky: Well today, CROWN reporter, Daisy, is meeting a robot inventor. Hi Daisy! Daisy: Hi Ben and Nicky! I m here with Professor Richard Williams and his new robot, Spark. Professor: Hello listeners. Say hello, Spark. Spark: Goodbye! Professor: Oh dear. He shouldn t say goodbye. He should say hello! Spark: Hel-lo! Daisy: That s better. Describe Spark for us, Professor! Professor: Spark is one metre tall and he is made from metal. He has got two short arms and two metal hands and wheels for feet. Daisy: Ah, I see! Professor: Yes, look! He s good at moving across the floor. But, err, he s not so good at stopping. He shouldn t do that. He should stop when I press this button! Daisy: Are home-robots very popular? Professor: Not yet but Spark is a robot for the home. I think robots should start doing more jobs at home. 10
11 Daisy: So what can Spark do? Professor: So. Spark can wash and vacuum the floor. Look! Daisy: Very good! Professor: And he can make a bed! Look! Daisy: Brilliant! What else can he do? Professor: Spark is good at making a cup of tea! Daisy: Oh, I d like a cup of tea. Let s see! Professor: Right, look! He s very good at picking up the kettle. Daisy: It s amazing! Spark is holding the kettle! Professor: And when I press this button. He puts a teabag in the cup! Daisy: This is so cool! Professor: And now the water! Professor: Oh no! Stop! That s shouldn t happen. He s bad with water. Daisy: Stop him! There s water everywhere! I m all wet! Daisy: Thank you Professor Williams. I should go! Professor: Ah, oh, goodbye Daisy! Say goodbye, Spark. Spark: Hel-lo. Professor: Sorry Daisy. He should say goodbye! 11

Ben: Number 2! Ben: Number 3! Ben: Write down your answers! TRACK 9: THE CROWN STORY Ben: Turtles Nicky: Tigers Ben: Orang-utans Nicky: And mountain gorillas. Ben: These are just four animals in danger. But there s one animal which is in serious danger. Nicky: Yes, it s the northern white rhino. Ben: We sent our wildlife reporter, Emily, to a conservation park in Kenya, Africa. She spoke to a Kenyan rhino ranger, Hassan. What happened? Emily: Hi Ben, Hi Nicky. Yes, last week I went to Kenya. I met rhino expert Hassan. He told me that there were only five northern white rhinos in the world. One is in California, USA. One is in the Czech Republic and three are in a conservation park in Kenya. Ben: But why are there only five northern white rhinos in the world? Emily: Poachers. 12
13 Ben: What s a poacher, Emily? Emily: People who kill rhinos. They sell the horn for money. Rhino horn sells for 50 thousand pounds a kilo. Ben: 50 thousand pounds? That s crazy! Emily: Hassan said his father caught a poacher. His father tried to save the rhino s life - but it died. Ben: That s terrible. Was the poacher sorry? Emily: He was sorry they caught him! The poacher said he sold the rhino horn to people who made medicines. Ben: So is it true there is only one northern white rhino in Kenya? Emily: Yes. Hassan said guards protect the rhino for 24 hours a day! Ben: Wow. How sad! Ben: How can CROWN listeners help, Emily? Emily: Listeners can help by looking at the Keep the Rhino Rangers Safe Campaign online. Or they can adopt an animal in danger, such as a rhino or gorilla or an orang-utan and they give a little bit of money every month. Ben: Thank you for your report, Emily. 13

Brian: Right, so this is my first photo. I was about two months old in this photo. Nicky: Ah bless! Brian: Yes, but I don t look very happy, do I? I look really angry. I look like a tomato, my face is so red! Maybe I was hungry or tired! Nicky: Aw sweet! Brian: Here s my second photo. I look like I m two years old here. I ve got dungarees on. And that s my Dad! Nicky: Yes, ah he s holding your hand! He looks very young. Brian: Yes, my Dad looks about 26 years old in this photo! His hair is so long he looks like an idiot! Nicky: Don t be rude! Brian: OK third photo. It s my first day at school. I m five years old here. I look very smart with my school uniform and tie. Nicky: But you re not smiling. You look frightened. Brian: I was. 16 TRACK 11: CULTURE CHAT Nicky: Roses, chocolates, cards Ben: Yes, it s that time of year again: Valentine s Day! Nicky: We want to know: What do British teens really do for Valentine s Day? Katie: So the big question: Did you get any Valentine s cards? Be honest. Katie: Oh, it s very quiet. So nobody got a Valentine s card? I don t believe you! Gemma: Tim. Go on! Tim: Oh, OK. Yes, I got a card. Katie: What did it say? Who was it from? Tim: It said I love you, darling! Katie and Gemma: Ah! Sweet! Steven: No. It was from his mum! Katie: OK so did anyone send any Valentine s cards? Gemma: I sent one to my sister. Katie: That s sweet. Tim? Tim: No I didn t send anything this year. I once sent one to a crush when I was ten years old! Katie: And Steven? Steven: OK, well I didn t send any cards. I sent my girlfriend a text and I bought her twelve red roses! Katie: That s lovely! Steven: Yes, she loved them, but the flowers cost me twenty pounds! It s so expensive! 16
17 Katie: Did your girlfriend give you anything? Steven: Well I didn t get a card wait but she gave me, err, this! Katie: That s cute! It s a teddy bear with a heart on its jumper. Do you like it? Steven: No, no I don t like teddy bears! I m fourteen! Katie: And will you take your girlfriend for a romantic meal tonight? Steven: No, it s impossible to get a table on Valentine s Day and I don t want to sit with lots of old people. So we went out last Saturday and had fish and chips together! Katie: That s nice! Gemma and Tim, are you sure you didn t get any Valentine s presents? What s that box of chocolates over there? Tim: No, they re not mine! I didn t get anything! Gemma: Oh, they re mine. I don t have a boyfriend so I bought them for myself. Katie: Fair enough! So what do you think of Valentine s Day, Tim? Tim: I don t like it. It s really cringey! Gemma: I agree with Tim. I hate it, it s embarrassing! But the chocolates were good! Katie: And Steven? You have a girlfriend. Do you like the tradition? Steven: No, I don t really like it! If you love somebody then you can show them every day, you don t have to buy flowers and definitely not teddy bears! Katie: Well, thank you all. I don t think Valentine s Day is a very popular tradition with these teens! 17
