John Kanaka 1. I heard, I heard the old man say, John Kanaka-naka tu-lai-ay. Today, today is a holiday, John Kanaka-naka tu-lai-ay. Refrain: Tu-lai-ay, Oh! Tu-lai-ay, John Kanaka, naka, Tu-lai-ay. 2. We ll work tomorrow, but no work today 3. We re bound away for Frisco Bay 4. A Yankee ship with a Yankee crew 5. Oh, haul away, oh, haul away!
Shenandoah Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you. Away, you rolling river. Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you. Away, I m bound away, Cross the wide Missouri. Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away, you rolling river. Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away, I m bound away. Cross the wide Missouri.
Tis seven long years since last I saw you. Away, you rolling river. Tis seven long years since last I saw you. Away, I m bound away. Cross the wide Missouri. Oh Shenandoah, she s bound to leave you. Away, you rolling river, Oh Shenandoah, I ll not deceive you. Away, I m bound away, Cross the wide Missouri. (Then CHORUS again!)
SHOOTING STAR (BY OWL CITY) SING and MOVE [VERSE 1] Close your tired eyes, relax and then Count from one to ten and open them. All these heavy thoughts will try to weigh you down, But not this time Way up in the air you're finally free. And you can stay up there right next to me. All this gravity will try to pull you down, But not this time
[CHORUS] When the sun goes down and the lights burn out, Then it's time for you to shine, Brighter than a shooting star, So shine no matter where you are. Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light, 'Cause its time for you to shine, Brighter than a shooting star, So shine no matter where you are... tonight! Woah, Woah, Woah Brighter than a shooting star Shine no matter where you are... Tonight!
[VERSE 2] Gaze into my eyes when the fire starts, And fan the flame so hot it melts our hearts. Oh, the pouring rain will try to put it out, But not this time. Let your colors burn and brightly burst, Into a million sparks that all disperse, And illuminate a world that will try to bring you down, But not this time!
[CHORUS] When the sun goes down and the lights burn out Then it's time for you to shine Brighter than a shooting star So shine no matter where you are Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light 'Cause its time for you to shine Brighter than a shooting star So shine no matter where you are... tonight Woah, Woah, Woah Brighter than a shooting star Shine no matter where you are... tonight
[BRIDGE] A thousand heartbeats beat in time, And makes this dark planet come alive. So when the lights flicker out tonight, You gotta shine!
[CHORUS] When the sun goes down and the lights burn out Then it's time for you to shine Brighter than a shooting star So shine no matter where you are Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light 'Cause its time for you to shine Brighter than a shooting star So shine no matter where you are... tonight Woah, Woah, Woah Brighter than a shooting star Shine no matter where you are... tonight
God Bless the U.S.A. (Sing and move with Mrs. Steele) If tomorrow all the things were gone I d worked for all my life, And I had to start again with just my children and my life, I d thank my lucky stars to be living here today, Cuz the flag still stands for freedom and they can t take that away!!! CHORUS: And I m proud to be an American where at least I know I m free, And I won t forget the ones who died who gave that right to, And I d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today, GOD BLESS THE U.S.A. From the lakes of Minnesota to the hills of Tennessee, Across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea, From Detroit down to Houston, and New York to L. A., Well, there s pride in every American heart and it s time we stand and say! CHORUS (Repeat twice)
The poems below are possible choices for 5 th grade groups to choose from. Please let me know which one interests you. If you have no preference, I will assign you a poem/group.
THE ACROBATS I ll swing By my ankles, She ll cling To your knees As you hang By your nose From a high-up Trapeze. But just one thing, please, As we float through the breeze Don t sneeze. Monica, Tanaya, Cheyenne, Trinity
LITTLE HOARSE My voice was raspy, rough, and cracked. I said, I am a little hoarse. They stuck a saddle on my back And jumped on me and now, of course, They trot me and they gallop me, They prance me up and down the town Yellin, Giddy up, little hoarse. (Some things don t mean the way they sound.)
INVENTION By Shel Silverstein I ve done it, I ve done it! Guess what I ve done! Invented a light that plugs into the sun. The sun is bright enough, The bulb is strong enough, But, oh, there s only one thing wrong The cord ain t long enough.
The Swing By Robert Louis Stevenson How do you like to go up in a swing, Up in the air so blue? Oh, I do think it is the pleasantest thing Ever a child can do. Up in the air and over the wall, Till I can see so wide, Rivers and streams and cattle and all, Over the countryside --- Till I look down on the garden green, Down on the roof so brown--- Up in the air I go flying again, Up in the air and down!
Beans (Author Unknown) Baked beans, butter beans, Big, fat, lima beans, Long, thin, string beans --- Those are just a few. Green beans, black beans, Big, fat, kidney beans, Red, hot, chili beans, Jumping beans too. Pea beans, pinto beans, Don t forget shelly beans. Last of all, best of all, I like jelly beans!!
EARLY BIRD By Shel Silverstein Oh, if you re a bird, be an early bird And catch the worm for your breakfast plate. If you re a bird, be an early bird But if you re a worm, sleep late.
OURCHESTRA By Shel Silverstein So you haven t got a drum, just beat your belly. So I haven t got a horn I ll play my nose. So we haven t any cymbals We ll just slap our hands together, And though there may be orchestras That sound a little better With their fancy shiny instruments That cost an awful lot Hey, we re making music twice as good By playing what we ve got!
We re Shaking Maracas By Jack Prelutsky We re shaking maracas And beating on drums, We re tapping on tables With fingers and thumbs, We jingle our bells, And we play tambourines, We rattle our bottles Of buttons and beans, We re blowing our whistles And tooting kazoos, We re clanging our cymbals As loud as we choose, We stomp up and down On the floor with our feet We love making music, The sound is so sweet.
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS (EVERYONE) BY Ralph Waldo Emerson To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people And the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics And endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch Or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded. We hope you enjoyed our program. Thank you for coming and good night.
This is the END of the program songs. The songs and poems below are for your own enjoyment.
THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER (Audience and students) Oh, say can you see, By the dawn s early light, What so proudly we hailed At the twilight s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, Through the perilous fight, O er the ramparts we watched Were so gallantly streaming? **And the rockets red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there, Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O er the land of the free And the home of the brave?
The Water is Wide 3. Oh, love is sweet, and love is fair, Fresh as the dew when it is new, But loves grows old, and it grows cold, And fades away like morning dew. 1. The water is wide, I cannot cross o er. And neither have I wings to fly. Give me a boat that can carry two, And both shall row, my love and I. 2. There is a ship sailing on the sea. It s loaded deep as deep can be. But not so deep as the love I m in ; I care not if I sink or swim.
Song #1: Rocky Mountain 1. Rocky mountain, rocky mountain, Rocky mountain HIGH! When you re on that rocky mountain HANG your head and cry. CHORUS: Do, do, do, do, do remember ME! Do, do, do, do, DO remember me! 2. Sunny valley, sunny valley, sunny valley LOW! When you re in that sunny valley, SING it soft and low. (CHORUS) 3. Stormy ocean, stormy ocean, stormy ocean WIDE, When you re on that stormy ocean, THERE S no place to hide. (then CHORUS)
Song # 7: I LOVE THE MOUNTAINS I love the mountains, I love the rolling hills, I love the flowers, I love the daffodils, I love the fireside when all the lights are low, Boom-dee-ah-da, Boom-dee-ah-da, Boom-dee-ah-da, Boom-dee-ah-da.

THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS It must have been cold there in my shadow, To never have sunlight on my face. You were content to let me shine, that s your way, You always walked a step behind. So I was the one with all the glory, While you were the one with all the strength. A beautiful face without a name, for so long, A beautiful smile to hide the pain.
CHORUS Did you ever know that you re my hero? And everything I would like to be? I can fly higher than an eagle, Cause you are the wind beneath my wings. It might have appeared to go unnoticed, But I ve got it all here in my heart. I want you to know I know the truth, Of course I know it. I would be nothing without you. CHORUS (TWICE)
Fly fly Fly away, you let me fly so high. Oh, fly fly So high against the sky, So high I almost touch the sky. Thank you, thank you, thank God for you, The wind beneath my wings.
