2 Poetic Device Vocabulary Resource (15 Terms with definitions AND examples) Perfect for student binders or notebooks
3 Poetry Vocabulary 1. stanza a group of lines forming a unit in a poem (like a paragraph) **2 line stanza is a couplet **4 line stanza is a quatrain Example of a STANZA from Jack Prelutsky s Be Glad Your Nose is on Your Face Be glad your nose is on your face, Not pasted on some other place, For if it were where it is not, You might dislike your nose a lot. 2. simile a comparison between 2 unlike things using like or as Example: She was as clever as a fox. 3. metaphor a directly stated comparison without using like or as Example: Our defensive line was a rock wall last night. 4. onomatopoeia the sound suggest the meaning (the attempt to spell out a sound) Examples: boom, bang, growl, buzz, meow, **We heard the hiss of the snake and the buzz of the bees. 5. personification giving human characteristics to inanimate objects or animals Examples: the teeth of the comb. 4 6. alliteration The repetition of the same sounds or letter at the beginning of each (or most) of the words in a sentence Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Ann ate anxiously as she waited for her Aunt Angie to arrive. 7. rhythm- the beat in a poem **Nursery rhymes usually have rhythm. Example: Mary has a little lamb Twinkle, twinkle little star 8. rhyme two or more words or phrases that end with the same sound. Example: cat/bat or flew/grew 9 repetition- using a key word or phrases several times throughout a poem (used to emphasize or help the reader understand the topic better) Example: Shel Siverstein s Early Bird 10. couplet two line stanzas that rhyme Oh, if you re a bird, be an early bird And catch the worm for your breakfast plate. If you re a bird, be an early early bird- But it you re a worm, sleep late. EX 1. Oh how I yearn to go EX 2. The kids were ecstatic that summer was one day away, Out in the cold, frigid snow. 5 11. haiku Japanese poem with 3 lines of 5, 7, 5 syllables Example: Love and adopt pets. Line 1 (5 syllables) They will always love you back. Line 2 (7 syllables) Best friends forever. Line 3 (5 syllables) 12. free verse a flowing poem that does NOT have a particular pattern (meter) or does not rhyme. Example: Teaching Building inquisitive minds Imparting knowledge Arousing Creativity Encouraging and enlightening souls 13. mood the feeling of a poem (could be pride, peace, sadness, fear, love, anger, etc) 14. imagery the use of vivid or descriptive language ***imagery sparks off the senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell) **imagery reaches the reader s senses Example :Excerpt from William Wordsworth s poem, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud 15. symbolism when something stands for something else I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze!! dove peace heart love, olive branch peace purple royal color 2014 Created by.
