2 NOW A QUESTION FOR YOU Interviews by Kellen O. & Nora K. WHAT DO YOU THINK? by Nora K. & Kellen O. Should libraries be quiet OR should they be social? Nora: People come here to read. Kellen:People may want to do read-alouds, or discuss books they are reading. Nora:Tutors come here with kids to help them learn. Too much noise can be distracting! We asked people around the library what their favorite type of joke is. These are their answers: Chermekaa and Addison said Nonsense jokes Emma, Megan, and four others said Knock-knock jokes Cecelia said Cow jokes Hailey said The banana/orange joke Someone anonymous said Political jokes and Claire said Subtle jokes Interesting what are YOUR favorite kind of jokes? (Illustration by Izzy B.) Kellen: If someone desires to be tutored- without talking- how could they get information? Nora: Some people have sensitive ears. If it s too loud, their ears may hurt. Kellen:You know that earplugs are a thing, right? Maybe sets of earplugs could be put in the library. Nora: We ve gotten suggestions from people saying it should be quieter. Kellen: Oh, come on! That was one person! Nora: Too much noise can make people upset. Kellen: Babies are the ones usually making the noise the noise isn t making them cry. Nora: Maybe if it s quieter the babies won t cry. Nora: People do homework here. Kellen: Babies cry- it s what they do! Kellen: Maybe sometimes people will need help with their homework. Nora: Sometimes people are in a bad mood and talking makes it worse. Kellen: People could talk to someone to cheer them up. Nora: I have every reason to believe that people would enjoy libraries to be quieter. Kellen: I think libraries should be social because more people would find a reason to come to the library. Besides, maybe libraries could become a better, more fun place to be if people could gather and hang out. (Illustration by Grailey D.) WE HAVE REACHED A DEADLOCK! HOW ABOUT YOU DECIDE NOW PUT YOUR OPINION IN OUR SUGGESTION ENVELOPE!
3 A COMIC by Caleb H. AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT by Grailey D. SERIES SPOTLIGHT by Izzy B. Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) Dr. Seuss was born on March 2 nd 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in English. He married Helen Palmer in He was famous for writing many books such as The Cat in the Hat. His first book was And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. He also wrote Green Eggs and Ham. He died in LaJolla, California on September 24 th 1991 at the age of 81. (Illustration by Chloe L.) I Funny: A Middle School Story by James Patterson Do you like stories about middle school? Are you a junior comedian? Then read this book (and series)- I Funny! Comedian Jamie Grimm is living a hilarious tale, but that doesn t stop him from being funny. He enters in Long Island s Funniest Comic Contest, and when he comes out a winner, he decides to enter the Manhattan contest. Even with his supportive friends and uncle, the competition s really stiff! Will he be a winner or loser (like his brother says) find out in I Funny! And if you like this one, there are 3 others in the series! Enjoy!
4 MOVIE SPOTLIGHT by Kendall B. JUST JOKING AROUND by Lily S. What do you call a fake noodle? An impasta What do lawyers wear to court? Lawsuits Home Alone Rated PG Starring Macaulay Culkin One of my favorite funny kids movies is Home Alone. I know that Home Alone is a Christmas movie but I like watching it all year long. The movie is about a boy who is supposed to go on vacation over Christmas break, but when the McCallister family leaves for Paris, they forget Kevin at home. Kevin s brother Buzz likes to say that Kevin will be fine because they live on the most boring street in the whole United States, but 2 robbers known as the Wet Bandits have their eye on the stuff in Kevin s house and they try to rob it. What the Wet Bandits don t know is that Kevin knows about their robbery and he sets up traps for the Wet Bandits to fall into. This is my favorite funny kids movie because of all the traps that the Wet Bandits fall into. They did make many more Home Alone movies, but they are not as good as the original. TRY THIS MAGAZINE! by Kellen O. What did the pencil say to the other pencil? You re looking sharp! Why did the picture go to jail? Because it was framed What do you call a baby monkey? 6 GREAT GRAPHIC NOVELS! by Nora K. & Izzy B. RESEARCH CORNER by Nora K. El Deafo by Cece Bell Cece s life changed forever when she lost her hearing. Her friend starts to treat her differently and she goes to a school that teaches her how to lip read. It also prevents her from making a friend, and even when she does, it s not easy. Cece has a disability, but will that keep her from making friends? I recommend this story for people who love rabbits (Cece s a rabbit). (Review by Izzy B.) Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson Are you a fan of roller skating? Well, if you are, read Roller Girl! Ever since Astrid watched a roller derby with her BFF Nicole, she had an interest in roller derby, so she wanted to sign up for roller derby camp. But when Nicole ditched her for dance camp and started hanging out with the school bully, Rachel, Astrid is forced to go alone to camp. Even though she was bad at it, she made a friend! But is a new BFF enough to make Astrid stop missing Nicole? Read this to find out! (Review by Izzy B.) Grolier Online Kids This database is good to use because it has a section on what happened today in history. It also has sections on animals, government, the world, space, and it s also available in Spanish! You can access it on the library website under Research at THIS ISSUE S POLL by Chloe L. & Izzy B. Izzy B. and I went around the library and asked people what book character they thought was the funniest. Here is what we found out. Thanks to the 22 people who voted! Sisters by Raina Telgemeier Do you want to know what sisters are really like? Well, if so, read Sisters! It includes flashbacks, lots of arguments, and more! It s about one sister who likes snakes and one who doesn t. That fact is VERY important! Read Sisters! (Review by Nora K.)
