1 BAL BHARATI PUBLIC SCHOOL, PITAMPURA, DELHI 34 ANNUAL EXAM ENGLISH CODE A TIME: 3 hrs. MM: 88 Please note: The students are not allowed to open the dictionary or any text book. Ensure that your question paper contains six printed pages. SECTION A COMPREHENSION (22 marks) I. Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow: (12 marks) 1. For Swaminathan, events took an unexpected turn. Father looked over the newspaper he was reading under the hall lamp and said, Swami, listen to this: News today is one of the bravery of a village lad who, while returning home by the jungle path, came face to face with a tiger The paragraph described the fight the boy had with the tiger and his flight up a tree, where he stayed for half a day till some people came that way and killed the tiger. Swaminathan said, I think he must have been a very strong and grown-up person, not at all a boy. How could a boy fight a tiger? 2. You think you are wiser than the newspaper? Father sneered. A man may have the strength of an elephant and yet be a coward: whereas another may have the strength of a straw, but if he has courage he can do anything. Courage is everything, strength and ages are not important. Swami disputed the theory. How can it be, Father? Suppose I have all the courage, what can I do if a tiger should attack me? 3. Leave alone strength, can you prove you have courage? Let me see if you can sleep alone tonight in my office room. A frightful offer, Swaminathan thought. He had always slept beside his Granny, and any change in this arrangement kept him trembling and awake all night. He hoped at first that his father was only joking. He mumbled weakly, From the first of next month I ll sleep alone, Father. 4. No, you must do it now. It is disgraceful sleeping beside Granny or Mother like a baby. You are in class seven and I don t at all like the way you are being brought up, he said, and looked at his wife, who was rocking the cradle. Why do you look at me while you say it? she asked. I hardly know anything about the boy. No, no, I don t mean you, Father said. If you mean that your mother is spoiling him, tell her so; and don t look at me, she said, and turned away. Swaminathan s father sat gloomily gazing at the newspaper on his lap. Swaminathan rose silently and tiptoed away to his bed in the passage. 5. Presently, Father came and stood over him. Swami, get up, he said. Swaminathan stirred and groaned as if in sleep. Father said, Get up, swami. Granny pleaded, Why do you disturb him? Get up, Swami, he said for the third time, and Swaminathan got up. Swaminathan looked at his Granny, hesitated for a moment, and followed his father into the office room. On the way he threw a look of appeal at his mother and she said, Why do you take him to the office room? He can sleep in the hall, I think. I don t think so, Father said, and Swaminathan slunk behind him with bowed head. Let me sleep in the hall, Father, he pleaded. Your office room is very dusty and there may be scorpions behind your law books.

2 There are no scorpions, little fellow. Sleep on the bench if you like. Can I have a lamp burning in the room? No. You must learn not to be afraid of darkness. It is only a question of habit. You must cultivate good habits. Write the answers in your own words unless the question specifically asks you to quote from the passage. Q1.Why do you think Swami s father made him listen to the news story about the boy killing a tiger? 1 Q2.What was Swami s father s theory of courage? Did Swami agree with his theory? Give a reason. 2 Q3. A frightful offer. 1.5 a) What is the offer? b) Why and for whom is the offer frightful? Q4.Why was Swami s father not happy with the way Swami was being brought up? Whom did he hold responsible for it? 2 Q5. Swaminathan rose silently and tip-toed away to his bed. Explain. 1 Q6.How was Swami s mother and grandmother different from his father? Give two pieces of evidence from the passage. 2 Q7. Give a suitable title to this passage. 1 Q8. Find out the words from the passage that mean the same as following. 1.5 a) an earnest request (para5) b) to move quietly (para 4) c) to shake in an uncontrollable manner (para 3) II Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow: (10 marks) 1. The entire village is in great excitement. All normal work is suspended. In the maidan hectic activity is going on. Hundreds of youngsters are moving here and there. Children are rolling on the ground and screaming in sheer joy. The men are extremely busy. They are building a stage. Wooden planks, bamboo matting, coconut mats are brought in large and scattered quantities. Everyone is bringing whatever he can supply: the dhobi of the village, for instance, is bringing numerous sheets and pieces of coloured cloth to drape the stage. The costumes are provided by the village folk themselves and everyone is happy that something he can give is going to be useful for the drama. The carpenter of the village has taken the responsibility of supplying all the planks and poles necessary for the erection of the stage. There is also the village school master who normally teaches boys reading and writing. Today he is directing the drama: he creates the dialogues and songs, and trains all the actors. 2. By evening the stage is ready :coconut fronds and banana stalks are tied up at the entrance of the stage as an auspicious decoration. The play starts at about ten or even later.before that the organisers go around with pipe and drum and garlands to invite all the important citizens of the village. The rest of the audience seat themselves wherever they like.

3 3. There are certain formalities which are strictly observed in presenting a play: the narrator, most likely the school master himself with his face painted and wearing a cloak and turban, enters and offers his salutation to the gathering and then he tells them what tale they are about to see and explains its importance. The story is usually a well-known episode from the Ramayana or the Mahabharata. Write the answers in your own words unless the question specifically asks you to quote from the passage. Q1.Give two examples from the passage that show excitement of the villagers. 2 Q2.How did each member of the community contribute for the stage show? Give two examples. 2 Q3.Why was the stage decorated with banana stalks and coconut fronds? 1 Q4.What are the two important roles played by the school master in the passage? 2 Q5.Give a suitable title to the passage. 1 Q6.Find the words from the passage that mean the same as follows: 2 1.very busy (para1) 2.favourable (para2) SECTION B - LITERATURE (25 marks) PART A (12 MARKS) 1.
