WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 2014 VOLUME 26 Decades Day By Summer Foraste Today was decade day so almost every one dressed up as if it was that decade I dressed up as a 60 s hippy. You could dress up as the 50 s, 60 s, 70 s, 80 s. Some people dressed up crazy for decade day!! Theme Day By Dori Manning Today is theme day. You get to dress up and be able to show your costumes of people who are from the olden days. I dressed up as Abigail Adams! There were also a lot of other costumes! One other costume was a flapper dress. Several people wore these. They were very pretty! Make sure to dress up. Remember tomorrow is a huge water day! Bring a towel and a swim suit!!! Check Out Derby Summer Arts Online! Amazing videos from the Noontime Show Candid photos of friends and counselors Useful information and notifications The Weathervane can be found online at Summer Arts at Derby website: 1
My Brother Jake Thomas Buffington By Emily Buffington My brother Jake is a twoyear-old boy. His favorite shows are Wiggles, Mickey Mouse, Max and Ruby, and Jake and the Never Land Pirates. Jake is smart, talented, and learning to talk. Do you have a younger brother or sister? Kiri and Shawn Kiri? By Kate Lewack Yes Shawn? Will you host with me? Yes Shawn, I will. Kiri? Yes Shawn? I love you. Picture Puzzle By Grace Desai and Amy Zhang and 10 DA This is a picture puzzle if you can t tell from the title. It shows a sentence with 3 words in it. Can you find out what those 3 words are? To enter a lottery for a small prize tell Amy or Grace what the answer is. You can find us during festival period or put a note under the door in the newspaper room that has your full name and answer. Then we will pick a name out of a hat so it is fair. We will do this every Friday at second period so get your answers in. This week s puzzle is amazingly easy, but they will get harder and harder each week. Every week we will have a new question for you and a better prize. So stay tuned! 2
The Little Pony Frozen By Charlie Donahue Once upon a time there was a little pony. His name was Bob and his last name was The Builder. He was a very nice pony. But one day he was fetching some water by the little stream in the woods. But every time he got something from nature he had to ask it first. So he asked the stream but the stream said No!!!. If you want to know what happens next well then look for THE LITTLE PONY BY CHARLIE DO- NAHUE in the Weathervane. By Ava Bub I love the movie Frozen. It has really good music. My favorite song is Let it Go. The movie is about a girl who has magic powers: she freezes things when she wants or when she is scared. She accidentally strikes her sister! I won t tell any more. I hope you see the movie! How to Make a Comic Step-by-Step By Ned Torrey Age: 8 STEP 1: Make little squares called panels. These are the most important things in your comic. STEP 2: Make cheesy little drawings in each box. It s okay to mess up a little bit! STEP 3: Write words! You may want to use speech bubbles. An Ending By Olivia Pace An ending is only what is brought before us and the way we chose to go around it. STEP 4: Let your imagination go wild! Make a cheesy ending! Maybe add in some stupidity! Just make it funny. 3
Derby Mad Libs Before You Perform By Caroline Patterson, Megan Bowen, Lucy Nash, and Kyra McConnell Derby (season) (plural noun) is a(n) (adjective) camp. Every (time of day), we have a circle where announcements are made to everyone by (name). Then we go to first period. There are many classes to choose from, such as (verb ending in ing), (verb ending in ing), and (adjective) classical. They are all (adjective). There is also a musical at camp. This year s is The Music (noun). The mini-musical is The (adjective) Mermaid. After (meal), we have the (time of day) show. This is where counselors and campers can perform or show crafts for the entire camp. Next is festival period, where campers can (verb) their class daily. At the end of the day, everybody is (adjective) because the day is over. The camp lasts for (number) weeks, and on the last day we have (noun) day!, 11, 13, and 13 By Samantha Hosp and Eliza Farley Have you ever wanted to go on stage and perform at the noontime show, but you are a little shy, nervous, or get knots in your stomach just from thinking about it? Well that was just how we felt before we performed today. It s normal to get nervous, but just go for it and SHINE!!!!!!!!! If that is you we are going to give you some tips on how to stop worrying and just go for it and perform! 1. You can t even see anybody because of the light, but if you are so nervous and just can t look just look at the light it makes you feel like no one is in the room. 2. If you are singing just look at the clock, I know it sounds weird but the clock is up above everyone. 3. (Only if you are doing something that doesn t involves walking) close your eyes and just imagine your just at your house doing it with no one around (but don t fall off the stage). 4. (If you can see people) imagine them in their underpants (Hey, it always helps me). BTW we were the ones who sang Cups!! WE really hope you use these tips and hope to see you perform in the Noontime Show!!! SHINE!!!!! 4
So this is theater. Bright lights prevent you from seeing the individual faces packed together in the audience. White boots hug your ankles as you wiggle your toes in all the extra room. Pale pink tights hug your legs snugly, but not uncomfortably. You straighten the white lace around your neck and shoulders. Two straight, smooth braids hang down on either side of your face. A floral dress hangs down to your knees. Puffy sleeves grasp your wrists. The rock in your stomach is gone. Someone starts to yell about a pool table. Here we go So this is theater. Theater By Lindsey Vogelmann Age: 13 A Very Random Fairy Tale #3 By Brooke Halaby Once upon a time there was a sign on a door, but not just any sign, a sign that said DO NOT OPEN THIS DOOR. Behind the door was a long dark hallway with snakes on each side and knives on the floor. In front of the door is a big room that is always filled with happiness. If anyone opens the door it looks like just a long dark hallway with nothing in it. But if someone walks one step into it the knives will come out through the floor and into the person s foot and they will die. Then the snakes will come through the walls and kill the rest of the people in that room and lock the doors so no one can get out and escape. This has thankfully never happened because no one has ever opened the door. People have been thinking of tearing it down but it is inside the room filled with happiness and if that room is destroyed, happiness will be ruined forever and everyone will be depressed forever. This is the question: Who will be the first to open the door? This is the REAL question: Who will be the first person to destroy the long dark hallway? Gaming Corner By Andrew Jones At the beginning of Raft Wars you see a little boy finding treasure. But, when pirates find out about the treasure, they want to steal it. You must defend your treasure. After your first win, you get credit that you can use to upgrade your boat, get rockets or get grenades. There are 11 levels and 4 upgrades for your ship; you can get 2 grenades and 2 rockets at a time. This game is really fun, and I say you should all play it. 5
Narwhals?? Interviewing Eliza By Luc Kylander By Hannah Chase Why did Shawn and Kiri pick narwhals? Why not sharks or whales or tigers? Narwhals are part whales part unicorn or so I ve been told. Seriously, a puppet show of narwhals! Why? It all started with improv on Monday. Really unicorns? Why unicorns. Why in the world was narwhals the theme? Sassy Classical By Alexa Cohen Age: 8 Sassy Classical is a class at Derby Summer Arts. The funny thing is, this year, only two people are taking the class. The class is in the lower school building in music 3. You can play any classical instrument you want! In the class, right now, they are playing a violin and a piano. When you play these instruments, you get to make up different lyrics. They can be about whatever you want! The people in the class like the class. That is because they get to play whatever they want to play without anyone saying they can t. I think this class is very fun and interesting. Q: How many years have you been at DSA? A: About five counting kids and juniors. Q: What is your favorite class? A: I don t know. Maybe Music Video or Mini Musical. Q: How long are you here for? A: Five weeks because I LOVE THIS CAMP!! Q: What are you most looking forward to this summer? A: The Mini Musical. Q: What part did you get in Mini Musical? A: Well, I would tell you but I want it to be a BIG SURPRISE!! Q: What do you like most about Derby Summer Arts? A: EVERYTHING!! Pasta: 12 Chicken: 2 Sandwiches: 2 Puppies: 3 Cats: Brendan, two others Favorite Food Survey By Jonathan Wisler and Reid Hosp (The cat one might or might not be true.) 6
