1 Reflections Winners 2006 Literature K 2nd Grade Visual Arts-K-2nd Grade My Favorite Place... 1st Place- Will Rodosky Costa Rica My favorite place is Costa Rica because it has beautiful rain forest, beaches, hotels, pools, and nice friends. We took a tour on a boat. Our driver had one eyeball but could see a baby sloth in the biggest tree I had ever seen. At a hotel called Costa Rica Inn they would serve bananas wrapped in bacon. It was so delicious I said I need 100 more pieces! Then we went to Tamarindo. I went surfing and I got to go fishing. I caught five fish and my brother caught a Jackfish which weighed 40 pounds. It took four grownups and three kids to reel it in. We got to eat salmon that night, it was delicious. The next morning we went to Tortugero. The sand was twinkling, the water had four foot waves as if they were man-made. Then we went to La Paz. We went to a butterfly dome and it was amazing. Six monarch butterflies landed on my brother Charlie and me. When we all went to the rainforest we saw 16 poison dart frogs, six monkeys, four sloths, and sharks. We stayed in a hotel called Peace Lodge. It was really a place to live in peace. They had two pools. Then another family came. We made friends and talked about sports, it was pretty fun! Their last name was Sargents. Then we took a puddle jumper back to Tamarindo. A full plane took us back to Newport Beach. Costa Rica sure is a place of twinkling beaches and smiling faces. 2nd Place Julianne Bartz - Wild Animal Park My favorite place is the Wild Animal Park because there are so many giraffes and elephants. There are also tigers and meercats and lions and rhinos too. When we go there I like to see the animals and ride the train. If I could be an animal I would be a giraffe because they are beautiful and graceful. If there were no giraffes in the world I would be an elephant because they stomp around and have big trunks. I would be an Asian elephant with little ears. If there were no elephants, I would be a meercat because I like the way they hide in holes where there is danger. They also hide their food in the holes. They are so cute and little. But even though I like meercats, giraffes are still my favorite. 3rd Place Cameron James Harbilas- My Favorite Place My favorite place is inside a book. It s my favorite place because books are very interesting and adventurous to me. Whenever I read, I always imagine myself as the character I am reading about and think of a solution for the problems they encounter in the story. I also like to guess how the book will end. Books let me use my endless imagination. Wherever I can really use my imagination will always be my favorite place.

2 4th Place Katie Langley- My Cousins House My favorite place is with my cousins. I usually get to see my cousins at Christmas. They are all teenagers. It s fun to drive to their house because it takes a long time and we sing silly songs and eat junk food. I like to go in the hot tub with my cousin Kelly. I like it when my cousin Stephanie braids my hair. It s fun to play Checkers and Monopoly with all four cousins. Sometimes we go to Ghiradelli Chocolate Factory and eat a big ice cream sundae. I love to jump on the trampoline and play tag. I wish that I could see my cousins every day. 5th Place (tie) Ryan Meckler Soccer Field My favorite place is the soccer field. I like running on the soccer field. It s fun to feel the air on my face. I like to kick the ball hard and far. When my coach puts me in goalie, I see the whole field. I see the ball and players. It is fun being on the field. 5th Place(tie)-Henry Wilde- My Room My favorite place is my room. It is fun to play in my room. I like to play with my cars. Some of my cars are fast. My room has a lot of animals. One of my favorite games is to stack them on each other. My room is blue and white. It makes me feel good when I am in my room. I have lots of books in my room, but one of my favorites Frog and Toad. On my shelves, I have five trophies. In my room, I also have a desk where I do my homework and draw pictures. I have lots and lots of Lego s. I build things out of my Lego s, and I like to make ships. I like my room because it is a great place!

3 Reflections Winners 2006 Literature 3rd 5th Grade Visual Arts-K-2nd Grade My Favorite Place... 1st Place Cayla Yasukochi My Favorite Place Next to a winding river Beside a gnarled tree One girl discovered it That single girl was me The tree was very old A willow tree, in fact I like to sit under its branches All of which were intact The river was quite beautiful Not that deep at all With clear, shining water I could not resist its call There were flowers on the bank Tulips, pansies and more All of which were quite pretty Right down to the core Wildlife roamed Deer and bunnies such All of them were my friends And lovely to the touch If you want to find this place As elegant as well-made lace Look deep inside your heart That s how I found this place I ll tell you where it is right now This lovely sweet sensation But you ll have to create your own Because it s in my imagination

4 2nd Place Charlotte Valentine- Rangiputa Where the wind blows softly, And the trees are still, The ocean ripples as Speckled sunlight dances On the waves. Up and down the hill are we, Jumping, twirling, Spinning with glee. Running on the soft tufts of grass, Then across the white sand, In and out again. Splash, splach! Cools you down With crystal clear water tickling Your skin. A little remote paradise In the North Island Of New Zealand, In the middle of the Pacific, away from The busy World... Rangiputa. 3rd Place Elizabeth Russell- A Place Called Michigan My favorite place, Is it under a tree to clear my thoughts? Is it in a big brown cardboard box? No, its home, home beneath the trees, In my summer home filled with glee, It s in a place called Michigan, I love all things in it, now and then, I go canoeing in the clear water, Usually I go with my father, I love the frogs that sing at night, They give me no scares, they give me no fright, I love the bats in the warm, clear breeze, And reading under the calm birch trees, In the winter, go hiking in the hills of snow, To go to this place, I never say no.

5 4th Place-Sabrina Roy- My Favorite Place My favorite place is somewhere no one else can go. I visit there every single day. It s so great just for me and myself to be there. I can do anything I want any time I want. It can be as beautiful as a summer flower or as dull as a storm cloud; it just depends on my mood. If you haven t guessed by now it s my imagination. My imagination is my favorite place because anything can happen there. No one can interrupt me and there are usually no problems. I can think about strange things, like my cousins dance recital, or I think of normal things like school. There I am the boss and no one can tell me what to do. If I want to think of play-do I can. If I want to think of soap I can. There are many things I can do there so that s why my imagination is my favorite place. 5th Place Jordan Hanna- Home I love my house, It s where I sleep like a little mouse, It s where I live and where I play, It s my favorite place night or day. Home is full of a family s laughter, Memories and joy that will last, Forever after. Home is where your family gathers, For special times and holiday chatter. Big or small, You re grateful for it all, Home is the place to be.

7 2nd Place Molly Rovzar- Hawaii The waves break The palm trees sway The wind blows. The ocean warm The fish beautiful The sand soft I spend time with my family On the beach Splashing about The tropical smoothies The fresh fruit The tropical taste I miss it when I am not there I love it when I am going there I appreciate when I am there I love it here Welcoming and warm It feels like home to me
