2 o-t-ourself wins! When was a kid, wished had a twin. twin would be like having a best friend live in my house! twin would look like me and want to do all the same things did! twin would be non-stop fun! ut, unfortunately, didn t have a twin. just had a sister. n older sister, who always did exciting things before did. o one day, decided to make my own twin. got a mirror, a big one, and walked around the house with it, holding it at my side. Whenever looked towards it, saw someone just like me my identical twin! t was really fun until tried to go downstairs and almost broke my kneecap. hat was a problem. ut ve solved it. now know how to make myself a twin without breaking my bones. f you, too, would like to have a twin for a little while here s how: What you ll need: piece of paper pen or pencil ow to do it: ut the paper down on a table. With one hand, hold the mirror perpendicular to the paper on the table, like this: old the pencil with the other hand. ooking at the reflection of your hand in the mirror (not at your actual hand), write your name. ow write think hear them. ow write y name is aurice, or some other name that your twin might have. eep writing and keep watching the reflection of your hands. on t look away. retty soon, your brain will fuse, and you ll begin to think that they re not your hands! hey re your twin s hands! sn t that weird? hand mirror (or, if you don t have a mirror, a cell-phone with the camera on reverse video so that it shows you). / / / agicby nnie in thearrows ix
3 nfortunately for all of us, time travel doesn t happen just because you want it to happen. t happens when it feels like it. nd you generally don t get to pick which time you re going to travel in; you just get dropped off in some other era. he result? ometimes you travel through time and don t have slightest idea what year you ve landed in. his can be very embarrassing and possibly dangerous. he ime-raveling heat heet can help. ere, you ll find tips on identifying eras through clothing, one of the most reliable clues available to the time traveler (if you end up someplace where no one s wearing anything, you have other problems). lip out the cheat sheet and keep it in your pocket because you never know! hoes: ime-raveling heat heet imonos: re the men wearing shoes that don t have soles and look like this? re ladies and gents wearing them? ongratulations! ou re in Japan! ilitary uniforms: ou ve landed sometime before ilitary uniforms are super-helpful because sometimes they have information written right on them, like for instance.. rmy on a belt buckle. re the men wearing high heels with bows? ikes! ou re in urope and it s somewhere between 1600 and re there guys in armor wearing helmets with brooms on top, like this? air: o all the rich-looking people have gray hair, even if they re young? re the soldiers wearing red coats and tight white pants? o any of the women have short hair? Whew! t s after uttons: re there any? t s after o the ladies have teeny-weeny waists and great big circle skirts that touch the ground, like this? t s between 1830 and 1870 o they have a whole lot of material bunched up on their behinds, like this? t s between 1870 and 1895 ou re in ancient ome, and that is a centurion. ood luck. t s between 1700 and 1800 in urope or orth merica. kirts: t s between 1750 and 1835, and those guys are ritish. o their skirts stop halfway between their ankles and their knees? ould be either or re they wearing helmets that look like this? t s World War. un!. / / / agicby nnie in thearrows ix

5 aking istory Whether you live in an apartment, a castle, or a yurt, the odds are that someone else will live there in the future. ou should leave a message for that kid. ow, you could write the kid a letter telling all about your life and times. hat would be very nice. ut wouldn t it be more fun to confuse the heck out of him or her by creating a fake historical document? f course it would! here are many kinds of fake documents you can make. For example: map of the neighborhood, with an X labeled burial spot n old-looking letter, describing an earthquake or a flood or something exciting orn notes that have interesting half-sentences on them, like avis couldn t stop laughing when or ell me the truth about the What you ll need: a piece of paper a pen watercolor paint (optional) What to do: Write or draw whatever you ve decided on. rumple the paper up. ip it. f you can, paint it yellowish-brown or dip it in tea. et it dry. ip it a little more. ut it in your house, someplace where no one will disturb it, like under the basement stairs, behind the toilet tank, taped to the underside of a shelf, on the ceiling of a cupboard. eave it there forever. What will happen: : ears from now, when you re all grownup and have forgotten all about it, some kid will be running around your present house, apartment, or yurt, screaming h my gosh! here s buried treasure in the neighborhood! urry! et me a shovel! nything else you think is cool nd that will be funny. picture with mysterious symbols on it.. / / / agicby nnie in thearrows ix
