Integrated Marine Observing System NCRIS 2013 Facility/Sub-facility Project Plan (period July 2013 to June 2015) Overview: IMOS Facility 6 National mooring network (ANMN) Sub-facility ANMN 6c Southern Australia moorings Operator South Australian Research and Development Institute Facility Leader Name: John Middleton Position: Program leader Oceanography john.middleton@sa.gov.au Phone: (office) (mobile) Other key people Charles James, Paul Malthouse, Paul van Ruth, SARDI Aquatic Sciences Operator Name: Gavin Begg Position: Chief Scientist Aquatic Sciences Representative Approval gavin.begg@sa.gov.au Phone: (office) Nature of investment and Implementation Strategy: Summary and Objectives Oceanographic and biogeochemical data will continue to be collected for the SAIMOS region (Figure 1 below), so as to continue to monitor the shelf and slope currents and cross-shelf exchange. The priority will be to maintain (KI ref station), (gulf) and SAM5CB (Coffin Bay) moorings continuously and the IMOS biogeochemical at the reference station. Additional biogeochemical will also continue to be made at these moorings. The very deep SAM7DS and SAM3MS moorings are at the shelf edge and weather and waves have in the past restricted their deployment and retrieval. On the other hand these moorings can be deployed for up to a year and suffer no bio-fouling. These moorings will be deployed if conditions permit. Major activities Under the CRIS funding, 5 cruises were planned between July 2013 and September 2014, with only and being maintained (Table 2). This will continue until the NCRIS 2013 contracts are signed. At that time the NCRIS 2013 mooring and cruise plan will commence as summarized in Figure 1 and the Tables 1 and 2 below. The number of cruises will be six per year under NCRIS 2013 (Figure 1), including: 1) Four, 4-day cruises will be made servicing 3 moorings with CTD. IMOS bio- will be done on each cruise, as well as SAIMOS bio- at the sites shown in Figure 1 (, and SAM5CB). Bio- at SAM2CP will cease. The number of SAIMOS biogeochemical samples will be reduced from 4 sites at 3 depths/cruise, to 3 sites at 3 depths/cruise. 2) Two, 3-day cruises will be made to turn moorings over and conduct IMOS bio- at the. Biofouling during summer becomes problematic for near surface moorings at
the reference station and also at the Spencer mooring. Thus, turn-arounds are required every 3 months, which can be done using 6 cruises/year. Each of the 4 main cruises (including bio/ctd ) will need 4 people to work in 2 shifts. The cruises are 4 days at sea, 2 days TOIL and 2 days preparation and 2 days after cruise activities for a total of 10 days. Note, this time does not include QA/QC, uploading emii, planning, purchase of consumables, instrument maintenance, etc which will be undertaken by Paul Malthouse, Charles James (physical) and Paul van Ruth (biogeochemical). Each of the two 3-day cruises will involve IMOS bio- at the reference station, but no other, and be focused on swapping moorings to minimise bio-fouling. These cruises will be undertaken by Malthouse and one other. The cruise activities and staffing are summarised in Table 1. The mooring locations are shown in Figure 2. Table 1. Cruise plans, activities and staff (PM=Paul Malthouse). This plan is detailed along with quarterly milestones in Table 2 below. Month August November January February March Activities (moorings) Hot swap, SAM5CB and Pull SAM3MS and SAM7DS out Hot swap, SAM5CB and Put SAM3MS and SAM7DS in if possible Nil Hot swap, SAM5CB and Hot swap, SAM5CP and Activities () CTD, SAIMOS bio- at 3 depths at sites(, SAM5CB, ) IMOS bio- at IMOS bio- at CTD, SAIMOS bio- at 3 depths at sites(, SAM5CB, ) IMOS bio- at CTD, SAIMOS bio- at 3 depths at sites(, SAM5CB, ) IMOS bio- at CTD, SAIMOS bio- at 3 depths at sites(, SAM5CB, ) IMOS bio- at IMOS bio- at Staff PM and 3 others PM and 1 other PM, and 3 others PM and 3 others PM and 3 others PM and 1 other Cruise length (days) Expected highlights, difficulties and/or breakthroughs for the NCRIS-2013 period SARDI s RV Ngerin has now been largely renovated. However, it is still an old vessel and we expect vessel failures will still occur.
Equipment to be purchased - only replacement parts and titanium replacements for the claws on the acoustic releases should increase likelihood of mooring retrieval. Figure 1. SAIMOS Mooring cruise track for NCRIS 2013 period.
Performance indicators: Data availability The be made available is outlined in the Implementation Planning Table. QC (for sensors, BGC / analysis and CTD data) is as per the agreed ANMN workflows and procedures available on the IMOS website. Utilising the datastreams from this facility: o Research projects - ongoing and planned projects Completed: Those completed to (and near completion) are listed in the IMOS data base On-going: a) Further validation of SARDI s Southern Australian Regional Ocean Model. b) The MARine Virtual Laboratory will use the SAIMOS and a global model to enhance the predictive skill of SARDI s S.A. Regional Ocean Model. In addition, through the BP project, extensive hydrodynamic models will be developed by SARDI and CSIRO for the Great Australian Bight region and be valid against the SAIMOS and IMOS data. The SAIMOS biogeochemical data will also be used. There are a number of ARC projects planned that will utilise the data (to be announced November). o Postgraduate student projects: To begin: Hugo de Oliveira will begin (January 2014) a detailed comparison of SARDI s SAROM model with the SAIMOS data collected to. This will provide the basis for the development of a data assimilating model in collaboration with Peter Oke (CSIRO) and Richard Colemen (UTas). Completed: Those completed to (and near completion) are listed in the IMOS data base o Publications, by category: Those completed to (and near completion) are listed in the IMOS data base. o Participation in conferences, symposia, workshops, public seminars: The SAIMOS mooring data has been used in studies to sustainably manage aquaculture and prawn fisheries in Spencer. The results of these studies will be published in and presented at various conferences and workshops. o Reanalysis products Nil Quality of research infrastructure SAIMOS mooring facility maintains an infrastructure that is of equal quality to that found throughout IMOS and ranked well in an international context. Collaborative infrastructure provision t.b.a. Waiting on ARC Federation Fellowship announcements for 2014 and beyond. Fostering collaborative and world-class research: Collaborative research has begun between SARDI Oceanography and Professor Noel James and PhD students (Queens University, Ontario, Canada). Using the IMOS data we have begun to show how the distribution of the benthic sediments (and temperature and salinity) is controlled by oceanic currents. This collaboration is expected to continue to examine links between oceanography and the benthos.
Informal collaborations are underway between SARDI Oceanography and Dr Craig Stevens (NIWA, N.Z.) on modelling and measurement related to aquaculture. SARDI s modelling and marine measurement capability complements that of NIWA. Budgets The Operator has confirmed the NCRIS-2013 cash and in-kind budget for this Facility in November Asset summary: Assets purchased under NCRIS or EIF funding: Only three moorings are to be maintained out of five so that 40% of the gear is to be mothballed. The mooring equipment was purchased in 2007 and 2008 and most have now been deployed for about 2 years which is expected to be the life of the equipment. However, while most equipment is functioning well, we expect that serious loss of performance of some during the NCRIS 2013 funding period. Assets to be purchased / co-invested / from 1 July 2013: - No major assets to be purchased only replacement parts if needed.
