1 December 14, 2017 FYI Slate Hill Student Newspaper Website Wiz Written By: Jo Majors Hello! I would like to tell you about a cool new coding website! Coding is a lot of numbers and letters to create an app or a game. But Scratch makes it MUCH easier! All you do is drag blocks together to code! Now don t go rushing to a computer. Scratch has some rules. 1. Search Scratch.mit.edu 2. On the top right corner in a blue box it will say Join Scratch. Click on that! 3. Make an account. Now you can make games and have fun (plus Scratch has some tips for you)! If You Think It s Getting Colder You re Wrong By: Hannah Houghtaling If you re reading this column, the title probably shocked you, but it s true. If you don t know what climate change is, it is the steadily growing temperature that affects the world. I interviewed Mrs. Rhodes for a little background info on what climate change is. (I had a class with her about it.) What is a brief summary of what climate change is? It is the temperature slowly growing by one or two degrees. That might not seem like a lot but it s been going on for a while, so if you think about it that s a lot of growing heat. Where is this happening? It is happening world wide. Why is it happening? People burning fossil fuels (such as gas and oil) releases greenhouse gases into the air and is trapped in Earth s atmosphere, and keeps the heat inside the Earth. Now you know what climate change is, try to find Letter From The Editor By: Ms.Kochensparger I am incredibly sorry to realize that I accidentally left out a reporter from the article about Newspaper Club in our last edition! Brooklyn Jacks has been with our marvelous team since the very beginning, and has been writing and contributing her excellent creative work to our newspaper since day one! Our current team now consists of: Bella Hayhurst, Conner Moghannam, Allison Bontley, Abby Comp, Logan McKim, Jayden White, Jo Majors, Bella Majors, Sid Wiles, Brooklyn Jacks, Hannah Houghtaling, Riley Drummond, Madison Slade, Carleigh Traverse, Natalie Manley, and Amari Hood. Thanks for reading these fabulous reporters hard work!

3 Words of Wisdom with Waddles By: Sid Wiles Animal of the Week By: Abby Comp We had six nominees for Animal of the Week: Giant Squid Fox Pig Hamster Moose Snow Leopard The winner is.the.fox. Wikipedia states that foxes are small to medium-sized omnivorous mammals belonging to several genera of the family Canidae. Foxes have a flattened skull, upright triangular ears, a pointed, slightly upturned snout, and a long bushy tail (or brush). (Source: All you need is a little sleep! CONGRATS to the FOX! One Question By: Hannah Houghtaling In this column you will read about my question to Mrs. White about the most important thing about Slate Hill. Her answer surprised me. I didn t think that she thought of the school the way she does. And now the question and the answer: What is the most important thing about the school? Well I think that the most important thing about the school is that we re all a big family. We educate so many people. But not just kids. The staff still take courses, and parents are learning too, the families of the kids, and the kids. We are all learning from each other and that is very important, was Mrs. White s answer. TEACHERS! By: Abby Comp Come one, come all, to the Only Teachers drawing competition. Any teacher can join! Just let Ms. Kochensparger know. The topic is..anything holiday-related! Everyone will get a certificate. GOOD LUCK!!!

We interviewed the 3rd grade teachers just before the parade began. We asked Are you excited? Ms. O Connell: I am ecstatic! Ms. Wanner: I am so excited! Ms. McCort: I am super excited Ms. Fischer: I hope it goes swimmingly! What s your favorite animal? Ms. O Connell: An anglerfish. Ms. Wanner: A beluga whale. I love saying it! 5 Testing Crime Scene Kids on the Spot By: Hannah Houghtaling This is the follow-up on the recent testing survey from the last newspaper that I hope you read. But now we got the kids opinion. I interviewed Madison Kirn in 6th grade about her feelings on tests. How do you feel when you have a test? It depends on the subject. I don t like science and social studies. But I do like math and reading. What do you do when you re informed of a test? I study really hard and pay attention in class. Now that you know this what do you think about testing? Is your answer different or the same? Logan with the Scoop and I m Not Talking About Ice Cream! By: Logan Mckim Do you think our teachers test us too much? My friend Hannah wrote about the same topic. I think kids deserve a say! I talked with some C.A.S. students and this is their very important thinking. Let it rip! Me: Do you think we are being tested too much? Patty: Yeah, totally. We are way overworked. Cali: Yes, completely. We need more time to grasp the subject. Robin: Yes! I need a BREAK! I myself have thought long and hard about this as well. I believe we should not be pushed so hard on testing matters. This has been the scoop of the week and I think it was a very important one. Until next time, bye people! Top Christmas Presents of 2017 (Picked by Newspaper Club) By Sidney Wiles 1. A pig!!! 2. Cold hard cash 3. Squishies 4. Hoverboard 5. Starbucks 6. Ikea floor pillow 7. 6 Stop the Hate: End the Cutting of Beautiful Squishies By: Madison Slade I have gone around to people to see their opinion on this hateful crime. Let s see what their opinion was It s sad because I love them, and people just cut them open after tons of money wasted on them - Presley Pingue I like them, so, no? -Hannah Cole Mhghtfghfgyr grrrr -Hannah Houghtaling It s a hateful crime and should stop -Logan Mckim It s disrespect for the squishies and the makers who made the squishies, that spent hours and days on end, and it s just sad. -A random person that dislikes squishy cutting There you go, I have proof that all of those people really hate squishy cutting. Please, end the hatred crime. Introducing By: Carleigh Ann Traverse I know you all may not know, but we all have new students this year at Slate hill Elementary. They all come in different grades. Especially for the kindergartners, they are all new here to Slate Hill. I think we should all take a moment to welcome all the new people to school, and the newest member to newspaper club...me. From kindergarten, all the way to 6th grade...and beyond, we should accept everyone for who they are. (Yes, even the students who have been here before. Also, the wonderful teachers who make sure we learn and walk out of school every day with at least some things you learned that day, and a smile on your face.) We all are different in many different ways and it s okay to be. We all are aware of the virtues, but...sometimes we choose NOT to show them, and I wish we would show all of them for the right reasons. I am sooo glad to be a part of this school to help everyone, and the teachers as much as I can. Info from Mr. Tailsman, and Ms. Chub: Mr. Tailsman: We read a book together called Wonder, and we both thought the same way. Ms. Chub: When given the choice between being right, and being kind...choose kind. (Said by Summer Dawson.)

7 Teacher of the Week By: Bella Hayhurst and Brooklyn Jacks This week s teacher of the week is Mr. Pound. He told the newspaper crew a few facts and here they are! Mr. Pound loves the color blue and his favorite animal is a shark! Wait isn t the Worthington Park Elementary school's mascot a shark? Hmmmm... He also said that when he was younger his favorite grade was 6th grade. His favorite food is chicken wings. Should his next career be teaching sixth graders how to make chicken wings? Mr. Pound said that if he ever had children that he would name them Zoey or Ethan. When we asked him what his favorite book was he replied with Above The Line. He must really like lines. New Releases! By Jayden White For the people that like Lego movies you will like this. The Lego Ninjago movie will be coming out soon. Here is some more news. The most rated video that came out two months ago, is the one and only NBA 2K18. But, this is the bad part, Kyrie Irving is on the cover. So Beware!!! Dabbin On Them Haters By Bella Majors I asked a few teachers how they felt about bullying. Mrs. Ewing: I hate bullying. It makes me very very very sad. Mr. Grizzell: It s terrible. Ms. Rosemeier: It makes me really sad to see someone purposely trying to hurt someone. Mr. Pound: I don t think it s cool to be mean to someone. I don t like bullying. It s not stellar. My favorite song is Why Can t We Be Friends. Friendship ROCKS! Mrs. Hill: I think it is an important topic that needs to be talked about at home and school. Drawn By Amari Hood These are what some of your teachers feel about bullying. If you are being bullied, these are just a few teachers that you can talk to. Stay tuned next time and remember, always be dabbin on them haters.

8 Flight of Stairs A Poem by Bella Hayhurst (The bold words are a line from a poem from the Harlem Renaissance) Listen here, Life is an exercise you have to push yourself to make your dreams come true. You re strong, unique and powerful. When you fall use your talents and your mind to pull yourself up. Don t try to be like the people who say it s easy. You learn from your mistakes. That is how you grow. Life is like a flight of stairs. You will start at the bottom. Don t be doubtful that you won t climb higher. Your intelligence and power will help the hate not get the best of you. You are not weak. You are not dumb. You are you! Don t change yourself to be somebody new. That won t prove anything. It will knock you down. Anything that you do either builds you or breaks you. You re too good for that. You re perfect. Don t take anything less from anyone. Dabbin On Them Haters (Part Two) Big Bully Five By Bella Majors With Mrs. Loges 1. Is it repeated? 2. Is it a habit? 3. Do they want control of you? 4. Is it hurting you? 5. Is it on purpose? 4 Types of Bullying 1. Cyber bullying 2. Social bullying 3. Physical bullying 4. Verbal bullying Cycle of Seasons by Natalie Manley (The bold words are a line from a poem from the Harlem Renaissance) When our race is approved, The joy and excitement of the cycle that God gave to us in hopes of binding us together, seasons upon seasons, until the underdogs are no longer disapproved of and the tidals carry away the hate of the past. Until man realizes that all of us on Earth revolve around the sun even in our darkest days, we are warmed by the glowing hot orb that lights a path of hope for us all. An animal of diseases is always welcome. They are infinite and we are not. But we will always belong to our own plan.
