1 FROM THE PRESIDENT On all accounts the 40th Annual National Awards for Cinematography on April 30 were very successful. 178 cinematographers, partners, sponsors and friends attended to see 15 Golden Tripods and 10 Awards of Distinctions handed out at our old stomping ground, the Hotel Grand Chancellor. These awards were dedicated to the memory of John Bowring ACS, who passed away at the early age of 55 as he was heading home from NAB. Included later in this newsletter is a eulogy from Victorian President, Alan Cole ACS. I was great to have the internationally recognised Australian cinematographer John Seale AM ACS ASC as our Guest of Honour at the awards and MC Jane Doyle was gracious and sharp as ever. The awards were dedicated to the memory of John Bowring ACS and various people used the occasion to talk about what a great cinematographer, father and partner to Sue Greenshields and wonderful supporter of the ACS JB was. Upcoming Events May 23 Canon DSLR Video Workshop in Adelaide with Pieter de Vries ACS and Nick Rains. See page 6 of this newsletter for details. Awards Entries Don t forget to collect your Awards entries from Anifex: 65 King William St., Kent Town New ACS Website The new ACS website is now live. 4 VALE JOHN BOWRING ACS I first met John in the 70 s when I went to his family home in East Malvern to hire a camera, one of two he had tucked under the bed in the spare bedroom. Sue was in the kitchen if I recall correctly. Little did I know then that these two would later on become such a formidable combination, not only as life partners, but business partners too, they were the driving force behind Lemac camera rentals. John is a legend in our industry and was one of our most highly respected cinematographers. He was a true visionary who unreservedly embraced new technologies. In spite of always proclaiming to be a!"film" person, I can t think of anyone that knew as much about video and digital technology as JB. His involvement with the ACS is longstanding, as a National sponsor, as a committee member, and as a provider of technical advice and facilities for ACS. John won over 30 ACS awards for his cinematography and in later years would not enter the awards because he was embarrassed he had too many already. In 1990 John received ACS accreditation, in 1998 Life Membership, and in 2005 he was inducted into the ACS Hall of Fame. His generosity was well known. He encouraged everybody with his vast knowledge and irrepressible sense of humour. The John Bowring ACS memorial fund has been established to continue John s passion for preserving the rich heritage of Australia's moving image industries for future generations. If you wish to make a contribution, I would invite you to visit the ACS website for details. On behalf of the ACS National Executive and all our members I would like to express our condolences and deepest sympathies to Sue, Jack and Kate. We all have our own special memories of John as a colleague, as a mentor and as a friend. He was such a terrific bloke. he is simply irreplaceable. Alan Cole ACS ACS Victoria President " PAGE 4
5 I concur with what Al said. As our National President was overseas, I attended JB s Memorial Service at Docklands Studios, Melbourne. It was huge! Somewhere between 1200 to 1500 people attended, there were video tributes from around the world, and many tributes presented by John s friends and family. John strongly supported our branch and helped many in the industry. Lemac have been a proud National Gold Sponsor of the ACS for many years. Note: Sue Greenshields, John Bowring's wife & lifetime partner requested prior to the Victorian Memorial Event, that instead of flowers, donations may be made to: The John Bowring ACS Memorial Fund. c/- Australian Cinematographers Society, PO Box 207 Cammeray NSW 2062 The fund is being set up in memory of John to be used to further the history of film in Australia.
