2 The [ahr-tuh-zen] Project: Dave Lefner A Documentary Short Film by Ric Serena Featuring music by Quiet Lights/Rival Songs Synopsis As a native-born Angeleno, artist Dave Lefner has always had a love for the city around him. His work reflects a nostalgia for its aging, but unique signage, storefronts, and architecture from all Los Angeles areas, ranging from the Valley to Hollywood to his current home of Downtown L.A. For Dave, the beauty of this metropolis, whether it s found in the extreme shadows cast from a broken neon sign at midday or maybe the intricate web of power lines crisscrossed overhead, provides the perfect inspiration for his detailed, very limited-edition, reduction linoleum block prints. Since earning his degree in Art from the California State University at Northridge, he has made it his main goal to try to document the history of LA through its urban landscape to help in the preservation of this city, especially Downtown s historical core. Even in his chosen medium of reduction linocuts, he hopes to further his goal of preservation. Because of the immediacy of today s world, the labor-intensive, process-oriented technique of block printing is being forgotten in the face of a digital age. Featuring the music of post-rock artists, Quiet Lights, the film documents the beautiful mystery of Dave s process. As his work slowly reveals itself with each new color, it becomes apparent that it is worth preserving as much as his subject matter, his city of angels.

3 Director s Statement I feel very fortunate to have spent 8 months documenting the inspiring talent of Los Angeles artist, Dave Lefner. I ve always enjoyed the visceral quality of his work, but now have a very fond appreciation for this incredibly passionate, dedicated and humble artisan. It brought me great joy to work on his documentary and to somehow be attached to his process if only by observing. A few months after the documentary was chosen as a Vimeo Staff Pick, Dave received an amazing gift, which he in turn shared with me. He relayed that he was having a particularly down day (something we're all susceptible to) when a large, stuffed envelope arrived in the mail. A middle school teacher in Tennessee who was teaching her students the process of reduction linocuts had stumbled on the documentary I'd directed. She watched it and decided to share it with her class. Afterward, her students came up with the idea to create their own pieces and send them to Dave along with their own personal messages. The envelope was filled with the classroom's work. Needless to say, Dave s day got much better.

4 Creative Team Director/Cinematographer/Editor Ric Serena is a director/editor living & working in beautiful Burbank, CA. His work includes commercial/promos, documentaries, narrative comedies and music videos. He co-owns Serena Creative, Inc. with his wife, Jen Serena (Still Photographer). They are currently working on the feature documentary film, Mile Mile & A Half, about their journey along the John Muir Trail with a group of other backpacker/filmmakers including TAP: Lefner sound mixer, Durand Trench.
