3 3 Synopsis (Funny Enough) is an entertaining and poignant dark comedy, which explores the pain inflicted by humour on the average human being. The film, an original piece written and directed by David Moore, follows a down-and-out comedian (Casper de Vries) who drifts from one small town to another. Having alienated his audience with his crude comments and dirty humours, his popularity has faded. He hits the road fighting not only for survival, but also to find the spark he once had. He has been reduced to doing shows in small towns and working for food and accommodation. As he drifts from remote location to remote location, successful comedians are being kidnapped, tortured and murdered in bizarre ways, and he seems to be riding right into the centre of this storm. The murders and kidnappings are in fact being orchestrated by a genius lawyer, Koos van der Merwe (Tobie Cronje), who gets criminals off their charges in exchange for sorting out comedians who offend him and his family name. De Vries has some strange experiences along his journey, some hard and some less so, and all help to make him look at himself and start to re-invent his persona. In the end, De Vries and Cronje come head-to-head in a somewhat unexpected finale. The film was shot in the Northern Cape and the Tankwa Karoo - one of the most arid and evocative regions of South Africa. With four of South Africa s top comedians playing themselves, the film has a realistic feel to it, and provides the perfect vehicle for them to do what they do best. 4 4 The Making Of Director s Notes I wrote this story more than 20 years ago while working in a takeaway shop in Epping. I always felt this would be an entertaining film. It was written for Bill Flynn and Tolla van der Merwe. Sadly, both passed away before it became possible to turn the idea into a reality. We did, however, convince Wicus van der Merwe to do a cameo for the film to represent his family. With the help of two friends, Erich Herbst and Gerry Bezuidenhout, I raised the funds required to complete the film. We have been granted a rebate from the DTI, which will be made available once the film is in cinemas. I travelled extensively through the lesser known parts of South Africa and more specifically the Karoo. All the locations featured in the film are authentic and none had to be redesigned or changed. Like the locations for my previous film Once Upon a Road Trip, which was sold to etv, was also shot in real places, with the story adapted around them. The movie is eccentric, but it has great fun appeal and it has been really well received by those who have seen it. As with our first film, we believe it will do well with film critics and the public alike. As a Director, I look to keep the style simple and the take odd. In addition to my love of images, I brought in Steve van Zyl to light and manage the first unit. The editing process was an interesting one in that we had various directors managing the cut. Casper de Vries, a filmmaker in his own right, added great value on the final cut. For me, music is extremely important. For that reason, we had music and a score written specifically for the film. Luna Paige and Daniel Kemp both produced incredible songs. Pierre Rommelaere who did the score for my first film once again tied the film together with his musical genius. This has been an incredible journey and one that demanded much, but has also given us the drive to make more movies in the future. Managing a cast and crew of this size and travelling almost 1 500kms while shooting is not easy but I would happily do it all again tomorrow. David Moore, Writer, Producer and Director

5 5 Cast Casper de Vries Casper de Vries Casper s professional career started in 1986 with Hallo Suid-Afrika (Hello South Africa). He has been on stage and television ever since. He wrote, produced and starred in a three-series comedy variety show, Die Casper Rasper Show ( ) and a soapie-spoof Haak & Steek (2003/04). He was also the host of Doen met 'n Miljoen!, the Afrikaans version of Deal or no Deal. In the early 1990s he hosted an America's Funniest Home Videos-style show called Devries. In 2009 he guest-starred in South Africa's longest running soap, Egoli. In 2010 he appears as a guest artist in the Afrikaans improvisational TV-show Proesstraat and as judge on the popular Afrikaans reality show Supersterre alongside Shaleen-Surtie Richards and Theuns Jordaan. He has appeared numerous times on Comedy Central Africa in the stand-up comedy show, Comedy Central Presents Live at Parker s, in Several of his stand-up, one-man comedy shows have also been featured on the channel including Mondig, Broeders, Ancestors and Mondig deel 2. In 2013 he announced that he was going to retire from his one-man stand-up comedy shows to focus on film and TV. Tobie Cronje Koos van der Merwe Tobie Cronje is an iconic South African actor. He studied drama at the University of Pretoria. He then worked for a motor insurance company and gave music lessons. He made his debut in the film Die Sersant en die Tiger Moth and thereafter became a household name and one of SA s most loved actors. His roles included those in the television series Louis Motors, Manakwalanners, Onder Draai die Duiwel Rond and Egoli. Tobie has won major awards and for decades has been a favourite comic of the nation. He has appeared in hundreds of stage productions and shows, and is well-known for his roles in Janice Honeyman s pantomimes. In 2002, he appeared in Promised Land Sandra Prinlsoo Johanna Sandra s stage and film career spans a period of 30 years. During this time, she has performed leading female roles in plays by renowned international dramatists and South African playwrights,

6 6 totalling over 100 different productions to date, eight feature films and numerous television productions. She has also established a reputation as an outstanding actress in many countries overseas, including England, France, Germany and the United States. After seeing Sandra perform in Koffer in die Kas at the Civic Theatre, Barry Ronge, former Sunday Times critic, wrote: In Japan, when the power and value of artists to the cultural life of the country are deemed to be at their height, they are declared 'national treasures' - an honour for which Sandra Prinsloo is long overdue. De Kat magazine named Sandra as one of the 100 most influential people in South Africa. At present Sandra has her own TV chat show on kyknet, interviewing prominent South Africans Her impressive list of accolades includes winning seven MNet and Vita awards, Most Popular Actress in South Africa, six Computicket Awards for her stage work and the Academy for Art and Sciences Award for her lifelong contribution to theatre in South Africa. Shaleen Surtie-Richards Cynthia Shaleen is best known for her title role in the 1988 feature film Fiela se Kind (Fiela's Child), and as Ester (Nenna) Willemse in the M-Net soap opera Egoli: Place of Gold. She has been a judge on the reality competition television series Supersterre since the show premiered in She has had recurring roles on two other South African soapies, Generations ( ) and 7de Laan (2002) and has appeared in the South African films Nag van die 19de (1992) and Leon Schuster's Mama Jack (2005), in which she played the role of the Mayoress. Born in Upington, Shaleen was originally a school teacher, before becoming a professional actress in 1984, and is now well-known for her many appearances on stage, television and films. Her stage work over the last 30 years includes productions by some of the country s leading directors. She has been seen on stage in all the main centres of the country, as well as London, and has participated in both the Grahamstown and Edinburgh Festivals. Barry Hilton Barry Hilton With a track record of 30 years in comedy, Barry Hilton has the knack of finding the ludicrous and the humorous in daily situations and making his audiences laugh at life. His universal appeal, coupled with a rigorous training on the comedy circuit alongside the likes of John Cleese, Billy Connolly and Bob Monkhouse, give him a professionalism welcomed by his peers.

7 7 In 2013 the industry paid tribute to Barry with A Lifetime Achiever Award, presented at the Annual Comics Choice Awards. His popularity extends far further, however. In 2013 he became the first South African to perform at the prestigious Harrah s Improv at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, headlining four shows. He opened the Hong Kong 2014 Comedy Festival, followed by gigs in Singapore, Macau and Shanghai. He s delighted the notoriously tough crowds in London s Clapham Grand and his hilarious performances in Dubai saw him shortlisted alongside John Cleese for the Best Comedy Act in Dubai s Timeout Nightlife Awards In between, he is a corporate entertainer, motivational speaker and actor. He has starred in two movies, produced five stand-up comedy DVDs, hosted TV talk shows and featured in numerous TV commercials, most memorably as the face of Savanna Cider for more than a dozen hugely popular adverts. Soli Philander Soli Philander Soli Philander is one of South Africa s top and most versatile performers. This seasoned broadcaster is also an award-winning actor, television presenter, director, comedian, playwright, columnist and motivational speaker. Born in Elsies River, Cape Town, Soli s roots are firmly planted in the Cape. After matriculating from John Ramsay Secondary School in Bishop Lavis, he says he fell into acting after accompanying a friend to an audition. Since then he has performed around South Africa in all the key theatres. He has also performed internationally in Sweden, The Netherlands, the US, the UK, Swaziland and Namibia. He is undoubtedly one of South Africa s great entertainers, more often than not using his distinctly unique brand of Cape Coloured humour. His immensely likable self-penned Heppie Hawker character, DC Diamond, has had South African and international audiences rolling in the aisles with his winning, oh-so-congenial Cape-Flat stereotypical stories of District Six and days of old. He has also presented on RSG, and portrayed comic characters on both Metro FM and AM Live. As well as being a comic and performer, Soli is also a highly respected and prolific writer and director. He has performed in many corporate shows for major companies like Colgate, Castrol, Glaxo, Sachs, SAA, SAB, Eskom, Telkom, M-Net, Afrikaans Stereo, John Deere, and more.

8 8 Kurt Schoonraad Kurt Schoonraad Kurt Schoonraad is one of South Africa s most recognised stand-up comedians. His earthy humour and comedic personality reaches from every corner of South Africa to the front page of the New York Times. The actor and comedian says that hailing from Mitchell s Plain, one of South Africa s largest townships, was influential in developing his sense of humour. Kurt s professional comedy career took flight almost two decades ago and he has since gone on to produce and perform his hugely successful one-man shows all over the country. He first earned attention as the quirky accidental tourist on the hit TV series Going Nowhere Slowly. He has since been acknowledged as one of SA s favourite TV personalities, hosting various game shows, appearing in the well-known BBC format Who Do You Think You Are? and Comedy Central presents Kurt Schoonraad, to name just two. He has starred in various big screen productions, with his latest appearance as a lead in the international award winning South African movie Skeem. He pioneered Jou Ma Se Comedy Club in Cape Town, growing it from its humble festival origins and taking it to its exciting new home at the V&A Waterfront, where it is Cape Town s only dedicated stand-up comedy venue. Jason Goliath Jason Goliath Jason Goliath is a larger than life comedian with a commanding stage presence, ridiculous amounts of energy and a character-based set focused on making audiences laugh at life s uncomfortable truths. He has performed successfully at numerous corporate events and leading comedy rooms at events, such as Blacks Only, Proudly Coloured Comedy Festival, Parkers, Melville Underground, Kings and Queens of Comedy, Captains Comedy Festival, AWEdnesday Comedy Jam, LOL at Gold Reef City, Comics Choice Awards Winners Lap, The Box and many more. He was nominated as Best Newcomer in the 2012 and Breakthrough Act in 2013, 2014 and 2015 for the Comics Choice Awards. Jason has also featured as the lead in a number of TV ads including Castle Lager, First For Women, Tiger Wheel and Tyre, CTM, Mobicell, Sasol, Bar One and Wimpy to name a few. Jason also starred as Gatiep in the SABC 1 Sitcom Ses Top La season 1 and 2 which screened on SABC 1. He performed to full houses at the Montreux Comedy Festival in Switzerland in December Jason was recognized as one of Africa s best comedians and was invited to represent Africa in Montreal at the Just for Laughs festival in July 2015.

9 9 Robin B Smith Dawid van der Merwe Robin is a South African former wrestling manager and actor. He has appeared in numerous films and television series since he began his acting career in the 1980s. In 2009 he played Johan De Villers in Invictus, a film about the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Ramey Short Johan van der Merwe Ramey Short is a South African actor who has worked on local and international film, television & commercials. He made a name for himself when he played the character of Dr Quinton Meyer on television series Binnelanders between 2008 and In 2015 he appeared in two South African feature films and Finders Keepers, and he appeared in the television series Black Sails. He plays the role of Kallie in Getroud Met Rugby, and can be seen on DStv channel kyknet. Philip Moolman Charl van der Merwe Philip Moolman is a South African singer, songwriter and actor best known for his television roles as Andre Vorster in Egoli and as Neil MacDonald in Die Sonkring. He has appeared in numerous television series, including Wenners, Die Netwerk, Torings, Die Fourth Reich, Rhythm City, Binnelanders, High Rollers, and Sterlopers. He was also seen on stage in the musicals Ester, Liefling and Ons Vir Jou. Philip is the owner of the popular live music venue Die Blou Hond, where acts such as Prime Circle, Chris Chameleon, Arno Carstens, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Bok van Blerk, Koos Kombuis and Coenie de Villiers have appeared on stage. Waldemar Schultz Koos van der Merwe Waldemar Schultz is a South African actor, director and voice artist best known for his role as Jan- Hendrik Terreblanche in the SABC2 soapie 7de Laan, from 2000 to He was also the host of the 7de Laan companion show Ken Jou Laan (Know Your Lane), which aired on SABC2 from 13 June to 5 September, He has a Master s degree in Drama from the University of Stellenbosch, where he taught acting. From 2010 to 2011 he starred as the lead character in the kyknet improvisational show Proesstraat (Proes Street), recorded without a script, in front of a live audience. In 2012 he guest-starred in the final season of the SABC1 sitcom Stokvel and in 2013 he starred in the fifth episode of the kyknet

10 10 crime anthology murder mystery drama series Die Boland Moorde (The Boland Murders). Most recently, he starred in the crime drama series Die Byl (The Axe), playing the lead role of Colonel Piet van der Bijl, a detective loosely based on the real life South African detective Piet Byleveld.

11 11 Crew David Moore Director, Writer, Producer David Moore has been in the industry for 25 years. He started as a sound engineer and then moved on to creating, shooting and directing his own projects. He produced inserts for SABC3 for several years in the early 90s and went on to winning the highest SA film and television award at the time for a short film, Spring2Mind. He won for directing, creating, and cinematography. David then created the famous cult travel show Going Nowhere Slowly which ran for seven years. His love of drifting and creating stories in odd places led him to finally make his first film Once Upon a Road Trip. This movie was nominated for four Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAAs) and took one for make-up. David has produced over 300 episodes of various shows for television with travel being his real passion. He writes continuously. His stories are original pieces and it is his plan to make sure all are completed in his lifetime. Erich Herbst Executive Producer Erich Herbst is an entrepreneur with a focus on various industries. He joined in the production of as Executive Producer and he plans to become more involved in the media industry by acquiring interests in online marketing. Gerry Bezuidenhout Producer Gerry Bezuidenhout grew up in Cape Town. After matriculating in 1986, he did his compulsory military service in Upington and then worked at the Media Centre in Cape Town making short clips on "driver of the year", "corporal of the year" and more. He studied at Pretoria film school and then left to travel around the world for seven years. He worked at Planet Hollywood in London as a waiter serving celebrities from all over the world. He also attended the Royal premier of Back to the Future 3 alongside the late Princess Diana.

12 12 On his return to South Africa, he worked for director David Moore as a camera operator and production assistant on various productions. He currently works in the aviation section for the United Nations World Food Programme in Darfur, Sudan. Steve Van Zyl Director of Photography (DoP) Steve has been in the film and television industry for more than 26 years. He started at Trillion Cape in the 1980s and shortly thereafter became a freelancer. He has been a DoP for more than 20 years and has added to his portfolio editing on digital systems, graphics, photographic manipulation, final sound mix and animation. His experience in lighting and editing is backed by an infinite love for the film and television industry. He is currently working as a producer, director and DoP for advertising agencies and direct to clients. Rick Taylor Editor Rick has been in the film industry for just over 10 years. He has worked on two indie films written and directed by David Moore. Rick was nominated for an Africa Movie Academy Award (AAMA) in editing for the 2014 movie Once Upon a Road Trip. Rick is a passionate and creative team member who has worked on a wide range of productions such as commercials, events, sports and music videos. He is currently working under the banner of his own company Caption Productions as an editor and DoP. David Warby Editor David Warby has many years of experience as a writer, director and editor in the media and television industry on a variety of projects including documentaries, reality TV, magazine shows, music videos, educational projects, corporate videos, commercials, sports events and the like. He directed and edited Summersalt's Rock Stars music video for MTV, and edited the award-winning Nelson Mandela documentary Max Oor Madiba. David enjoys crafting narratives, whether scripted or not, that inspire the audience.
