BAFTA Kids BAFTA 70 Name: Age: School: Think about the films, television and games you enjoy most. What are they? Can you say what it is about them you like? Favourite film(s): What I like about them: Favourite TV programmes: What I like about them: Favourite game(s): What I like about them: Take it further: Ask an adult what films, television or games they enjoyed most when they were a child. Can they say what it is about them that they liked? What is the first film or television programme you remember watching? What was the first game you remember playing? Can you remember much about them, or how they made you feel? My first... What I remember about it: Film: TV programme: Game: Take it further: Ask an adult the same question.
Activity Draw a picture of your first film, game or TV memory. Think about where you were (at home, in a cinema etc) and who you were with. Write a few lines about how you felt.
BAFTA is a charity which has supported great film, television and games for 70 years. It was started in 1947, two years after the end of World War II, to assist the British film and television industry. Since then BAFTA has helped countless actors, writers, directors and creative people work in entertainment. One major way in which the charity does this is with its awards ceremonies which promote and celebrate the best in creativity. It s not just grown up film television and games though, in 1996 BAFTA hosted its first Children s Awards for film, television and games made for children. And the winner is Give it a go: BAFTA is famous for its awards shows and winning a BAFTA award can help people become extremely successful and famous. Imagine you are in charge of the awards who would you give them to? Why do they deserve to win? Have a look at the previous BAFTA winners at if you need some ideas. Category Best Film Best TV Programme Best Actress Best Actor Best Game The winner is They/it deserves to win because (we ve left a few rows blank for you to come up with your own awards categories) You might want to fill in some of this now and come back to it later when you ve had a think. Why not fill it in again in a year s time and see which new things you like? You might surprise yourself! Take it further: Ask an adult to complete a list too (things they like that are suitable for children). Have they heard of your choices? If they haven t, how would you describe them to your adult?
In front of the camera Do you have what it takes to be a television presenter? You don t need to be an actor to go in front of the camera presenters can come from all sorts of backgrounds. The most important skills you need are resilience, self-esteem, confidence and communication, the sort of skills you need in most parts of your life! For inspiration, watch BAFTA Kids reporter Tianna at work at. BAFTA FACT BAFTA has been awarding presenters since Mortimer Wheeler, an archaeology expert, won the first award and other winners include David Attenborough, Ant and Dec, Sam and Mark and Holly Willoughby. Visit our online timeline heritage.bafta.org to explore more. FLOELLA BENJAMIN Children s Special Award winner Floella, (or, to give her her full title, Baroness Floella Benjamin obe) came to the UK with her family from Trinidad when she was very young an experience she wrote about in her book Coming to England. Always wanting to perform, she auditioned to sing in her father s jazz band when she was just 12. Floella acted in musicals and plays before moving into television. She is best known for presenting and acting in children s programmes including Play School and Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. She has worked with numerous charities and has been a BAFTA chairperson, helping to ensure that the voices of women and people of different races are also heard on television.
Give it a go: Interview another child in your class about their film, TV and game memories. You can write your own questions, but make sure you ask them about why they like something an interview is more interesting if you learn something about what the interviewee is like. Listen carefully and make notes you might even want to film or record your interview to listen back to later. Share what you have found out about your interviewee with the rest of the class. You could even write it up into a proper magazine-style interview! Interview Notes & Question Ideas What is the first film/tv programme/game you remember? (just ask for one at a time!) Where did you watch/play it? Did you enjoy it? What did you like/dislike about it? Add some of your own questions to ask: Take it further: Interview an adult in the same way. What do they remember about the films, TV and games from their childhood?
Behind the scenes When you watch a film or programme, or play a game, thousands of people have been hard at work to create it. Writers come up with stories, artists design locations, costumes and effects, and directors take charge and make sure everything is on track. And those are just some of the thousands of jobs out there! AARDMAN ANIMATION 13 BAFTA wins and 15 nominations Aardman, the company which makes Shaun the Sheep, was founded way back in 1972 by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, both wanting to fulfil their dream of creating an animated film. Today it is one of the most famous animation studios in the world, having made many films and television programmes. In 1985 Nick Park joined Aardman. Having loved cartoons as a child, he started making films with his mum s help when he was just 13. He went on to create, amongst others, Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep. Aardman are now considered to be one of the world leaders in a technique called stop motion animation, using plasticine models. BAFTA FACT The first animation to win a BAFTA was a czech film called Song of the Prairie. Animation is a painstaking process and they take large teams of people a very long time to create. For this reason, it used to be rare to have feature length animation films (like the ones shown in cinemas). With the advent of computers, these became more common place, and so BAFTA introduced a special award for feature length animations into the film awards in Visit our online timeline heritage.bafta.org to explore more.
Give it a go: A storyboard gives you an outline of the story so that you have an idea how everything will work out before you actually make it. It s not about drawing the best pictures (simple stick figures will do!), it s about showing what will happen in a scene or story. Use the boxes to make your own storyboard. Think about who is in it, where it is set and what happens.
Online, and beyond! Entertainment has changed enormously over the last 70 years. From wireless radio and colour TV to 3D movies, virtual reality and smartphones which allow us to watch anything whenever we want, wherever we want, creative people have used technology to take us to new and exciting worlds. It s easier than ever before for people to make their own stories and games, sharing them online for the world to see. With a bit of passion and hard work, your ideas could become tomorrow s big hits! MINECRAFT Five BAFTA wins and five nominations Creator Markus Persson started coding his own games when he was seven. He worked as a games developer with big companies before leaving to create and release his own title, Minecraft. Through support from Mojang studios, it has gone on to become an enormous global smash with millions of players creating their own worlds within it. Some of the players inspired by it now might be future games designers themselves! BAFTA FACT In 1998 BAFTA created a new awards ceremony for games and online content. Originally these were called the interactive awards but by 2004 these had transformed into the games awards. Visit our online timeline heritage.bafta.org to explore more. Give it a go: Think of all the different ways you watch films/tv/play games (eg. cinema, DVD, bluray, tablet, phone...). Write them down here:
Can you imagine a new way to watch/play? Draw it here: Take it further: Compare your answers with an adult. What did they have access to when they were your age? Lots of entertainment is created for online spaces now. Which websites do you like to visit? What do you like about them? Check out the links at the end of this resource for sites you could check out. Website What I like about it
STAR WARS Six BAFTA wins and 26 nominations across film, games and interactive media Despite being an American film, the first Star Wars movie was made in the UK in 1977 and many of its cast and crew were British. Fast-forward 40 years and the new Star Wars films are also being made in studios in the UK with a huge cast and crew of people who grew up watching the old movies. Many of the fans who watched the films years ago as children now have children of their own. John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, both Brits who play the new heroes Finn and Rey, weren t even born when the original Star Wars came out, but here they are, exciting a whole new generation of filmgoers. Imagine making something today and children and adults still getting excited about it almost half a century later! ANT & DEC Seven BAFTA wins and four nominations for their shows and presenting roles Long time friends Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly started out as child actors over 25 years ago and met on the set of a popular CBBC show called Byker Grove. They became pop stars for a bit before getting jobs as TV presenters. At first they presented children s programmes and made some very popular Saturday morning shows. They have gone on to become most famous for presenting television in the evening, and shows such as Ant & Dec s Saturday Night Takeaway and I m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! have now been running for years. HORRIBLE HISTORIES Eight BAFTA wins and 13 nominations Terry Deary did all sorts of jobs before becoming a writer including being an actor, teacher and theatre director. While putting on children s plays he decided to try writing a funny history book and the rest is, well, history! 25 years later, Horrible Histories is a massive success: books, audiobooks, a TV series, stage shows, magazines and games, to name but a few. Terry even wanted to make a Horrible Histories theme park - imagine that!
THUNDERBIRDS Three BAFTA nominations The heroes of International Rescue blasted onto television screens over 50 years ago in Created by the husband and wife team of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the puppet adventures of the lifesaving team and their amazing vehicles became a big hit and went on to be made into films, books, toys and games. To celebrate Thunderbirds 50th anniversary in 2015, a new animated series was released, Thunderbirds Are Go, using a unique mix of CGI animation and live-action model sets. HARRY POTTER 10 BAFTA wins and 43 nominations The Harry Potter films are so big it sometimes feels as if every British actor has been in at least one of them! After the books became massively popular, a huge cast of actors young and old brought the characters to life on the big screen, helping Harry Potter to become popular all over the world. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint spent most of their childhood playing the parts, growing up in front of the camera. Behind the films there was an enormous British crew making sets, props and special effects, many of them working on every single movie that s over ten years! BLUE PETER Nine BAFTA wins and 31 nominations Now this is impressive: Blue Peter is the longest running children s television programme in the world! It first aired in 1958 and has been running ever since. It s a bit like a magazine, but on television, so it talks about lots of different subjects, including news, geography, science, entertainment and history. The arts and crafts sections are perhaps the most famous, with thousands of children following the instructions and making their own masterpieces at home. Most of the episodes are filmed live too, so there s no room to make mistakes!
