1 1 rchitectural Conservancy of Ontario Port Hope Branch Newsletter September 2014 President's Report It has been an unusually damp summer but the record rains certainly haven t dampened the spirits of our Membership! This year s bus Tour was on rainy June 11th and took us to Lindsay and Sturgeon Point. The homes and churches we visited in both locations were unique, extremely interesting and gave us an insight into the historical importance and prosperity of these communities. Participants in our other summer events enjoyed much finer weather: The Masseys at Home outing on June 14th was fully subscribed well in advance and everyone attending enjoyed visiting Batterwood and Durham House and their gracious owners. Our ugust 10th Picnic in the park had perfect weather too and hundreds of people joined us to celebrate our 50th anniversary in Port Hope. Everyone had a wonderful time enjoying all the activities, entertainment and of course - food. Thanks to the organizers and all of the volunteers for making this a very special day. nother special day will be Saturday October 4th our 49th nnual House Tour. There are some real gems on this year s Tour and you won t want to miss them. Remember, last year tickets sold out well before the event buy yours now so you won t be disappointed! You will have noticed the scaffolding in front of Walton Street as our Branch works with another building owner in the restoration of the façade of their building. The unveiling may have happened by the time you read this so please stop by to enjoy the results. Our last issue reported that Phil Carter is putting together a book The History of CO - Port Hope Over the Last 50 Years. The book is nearly finalized. proof was available for viewing at the ugust 10th picnic and a large number of people signed up for copies. Make sure you get yours when it s published! In my June report I referred to CO s new Brand and hoped this issue would contain an article and pictures. Well I jumped the gun I m afraid as the province-wide release won t take place for a couple of months, at which point I ll provide full details. It s rewarding to be part of an effective group such as ours and I m honoured to be at the helm at this very important time as we reflect on and celebrate the successes of our first fifty years while laying the ground work for going forward. Downtown Task Force: Your Money Well Spent, Part II follow-up from our previous edition about the Downtown Task Force. Behind the scenes, Port Hope CO s Downtown Task Force is up to its neck fielding inquiries, as it continues to put your donation dollars to work on the restoration of buildings in the heritage district. Out of recent discussions, our fourth project has emerged: the commercial block at Walton Street is getting the restorative touch, thanks to funding assistance from the Task Force. The building, which houses the BBC variety store and Ganaraska rt & Framing is jointly owned "Before": Imagine this building without the humdrum grey paint. by Mel Talbot and George Watson. In the shadow of the larger and more elaborate St. Lawrence Hotel next door, the building is sometimes overlooked but it s a gem nevertheless. Built about 1855, it s a six-bay Georgian made fancy with a nicely executed brick cornice and slender brick pilasters between each bay. These haven t been visible for a while, as the building has been hidden under scaffolding. When all is done, the masonry on the façade will look good as new, especially shorn of its current dull grey paint. Bricks cleaned and the mortar joints under repair. The Downtown Task Force is Port Hope CO s single most ambitious Endeavour and receives the lion s share of the proceeds from the house tour, the auction, other CO activities and of course, your donations. The Olde Tyme Picnic Fun-Filled Day at CO s 50th nniversary Picnic Sunday, ugust 10th brought sunshine, warmth and hundreds of Port Hope s citizens to Memorial Park in celebration of the CO s 50th nniversary. Everyone was invited to the Olde Tyme Picnic held from noon to 4 pm in the park and those who were fortunate to attend enjoyed great, live entertainment, wagon rides, Denholm Blair the clown, a tug-of-war contest, delicious food, fun-filled children s activities and prizes, facepainting, craft demos and much more. Memorial Park was transformed back in time with checkered table cloths, fresh cut flowers in mason jars, bunches of balloons on every table, trees covered with ribbon, children playing games, families enjoying the complementary entertainment and barbecue. Committee members were dressed in turn-of-the-century attire and served hot dogs, sausages, corn on the cob, watermelon, lemonade and other goodies. The Tug of War between Port Hope Police and Port Hope Firefighters was certainly an entertaining battle and showed great community spirit. The mbassador s Dixieland Band and Maple Leaf Champions Band provided lively music to complement a very upbeat atmosphere. The day garnered a great sense of community and enjoyment, along with interest and support towards the CO s commitment to restoration and preservation. prototype of the CO Port Hope s 50th nniversary book by Phil Carter was on hand for viewing. 4 6 7 CO Matters September th nnual House Tour Saturday, October 4th, 2014, 10am 4pm Please join us for this year s tour, a tour which is full of gems, ranging from the ultra-modern and a converted factory, to a large Romanesque home and several of Port Hope s famous "Ontario cottages". The tour provides a truly eclectic mix. We feature three "Trick" cottages: 9 Church St., 254 Ridout St. and 15 Sullivan St. William Trick and his brother, Richard, were masons in the 1850s who were responsible for a number of cottages in the area in Port Hope called 15 Sullivan St. English Town. lthough these three homes show similarities, the differences in their layouts create a distinctive atmosphere within each. 254 Ridout St. 9 Church St. t 28 Bedford St. you will find Crawley House, which also started out as a modest Ontario cottage c. 1850, but, with the addition of a second storey in the 1880s, was transformed into the Romanesque Revival style. period style that created harmonious streetscapes in central Toronto, here, as a single example set back on a large lot, the house stands out. t 14 Cumberland St. (c. 2004), we showcase an International style, architect-designed home in which the materials used were often chosen for their recycled content. Don t be fooled by its external box-like 14 Cumberland St. 28 Bedford St. appearance; inside it has dramatic spaces. Greenaway Cottage, an example of a rectangularshaped Ontario Cottage at 15 Victoria St., has a Regency flair created by its high ceilings, large windows, and the lovely front porch with its delicately turned columns and decorative trellis. The Georgian Vernacular house at 36 Princess St. is symmetrical in design which, with a modern addition at the back, makes a very comfortable family home. Its Georgian feel receives added emphasis from the simplicity of the treatment of its front door, its running red brick face, and its hipped roof.... continued (Continued from previous page) The cottage at 66 Pine St. is one of a terrace of three frame, workers cottages. It gives us an insight into the generosity of space in these early cottages with layouts that now provide comfortable modern living-space. 78 Victoria St. is a modern (c. 1965), flat-roofed bungalow with an intriguing interior plan that has created a courtyard between the two wings of the house. Within this courtyard is a very private swimming pool. The house has recently been extensively renovated. The three story rectangular yellow brick building at 39 Mill St. is thought to have been a carpet mill in the past. The middle of 3 units that comprise this building has been completely renovated and shows how modern interventions can give new life to an old building. Lastly, we visit St. Mark s on King St., the oldest of Port Hope s churches. Featured for this tour, however, is its new addition, the Parish Hall completed in 2013, designed to provide modern, flexible space, but also to be suitable in its exterior appearance as a complement to a significant designated heritage building. Please remember that the funds raised from this Tour are directed to supporting the work of the CO in Port Hope. The most recent example of such ongoing restoration assistance is currently hidden by scaffolding on the south side of Walton St. Tickets are $25 and available at select area merchants, by mail or by PayPal. If the subject is of general interest, we shall publish the question and answer. 7th Evening with the CO & Friends: Down the Creek Wed, Nov 12th, 7pm, Port Hope Library Brief Historic Tour of the Ganaraska River, tracing its mills, development, deforestation, flooding, and more with Robin Long Robin Long is the owner and custodian of the Long Collection, one of the finest collections of old photos of Port Hope in existence. Many of you will remember the GM was it eight years ago? when Robin gave his magical slide show on old Port Hope to the assembled members. The audience was captivated couldn t have enough of it. Each slide was met with a chorus of exclamations and animated discussion as people recognized scenes they knew yet didn t know of a Port Hope transmuted by time. So Robin (having been badgered by us to do it once more) is again giving us a slide show, but this time it s a different one. This one features the Ganaraska, which gave rise to our town and still forms its central feature and its pulse, with a few interesting side angles devoted to the railways, and a scattering of slides to divert us of early Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny occasions. $20 members, $25 non-members, including Wine & refreshments.
