1 Architectural Conservancy Ontario Port Hope Branch Newsletter September 2016 Chairman's Report I can t quite believe it is time for our next ACO Matters. Time flies and the ACO has been busy. I reported last time that the Royal Bank of Canada had vacated their building on Walton street, containing the historic Port Hope Opera House. We have had several meetings to discuss the building with the Municipality and the Capitol Theatre. I have no report at this time except to say that everybody is keen to see something positive result form the availability of the building for the people of Port Hope. Another building we need to keep our eye on is the historic Central School on Pine St. There have been rumblings of a possible development there. Our Downtown committee has been hard at work and there are more buildings in the downtown that will benefit from an ACO Port Hope Grant. We have really made a difference and the core of our Town is looking better and better. This is in no small part due to the activities of the other committees, notably the House and the Garden Tours and the Auction with their fundraising efforts. On the subject of fundraising, I am also very pleased to announce that we have received an additional final gift from the Estate of Barbara Jones in the amount of $25,000. This brings the gift to a total of $150,000. Extraordinary! We can t thank Barbara enough for her gift to help further our work. On August 11th we hosted our annual ACO thank you picnic for our volunteers and supporters. A big thanks goes to everyone who pitches in to help us in all our projects and activities and to Peter Kedwell and his committee for their hard work in putting on the event. As a part of our evening we were thrilled to present scholarships to three young persons studying heritage conservation: Quintin Madsen, studying at Algonquin college; Akira Inman, studying at City and Guilds Art School in London, UK; and Evan Oxland, attending Penn Design in Philadelphia. Our next big event is our major fundraiser, the House Tour, on Saturday October 1st, an event on which the committee works all year round. Our heartfelt thanks go to this tireless committee, and to the home-owners who have so generously opened their homes for the event. It promises to be a great Tour with a fascinating crop of diverse homes (see the promo on this page), so be sure not to miss it. Your Chair, Phil Goldsmith I call architecture frozen music. 3 3 11 th Evening with the ACO Thursday October 13 th, 7pm Port Hope Library Lack of Peace, Disorder and Bad Government in America, I came to help the Good Americans overcome the Bad. General James Robertson General Robertson s quotation is the most concise and precise summary of British strategy in America, from 1763 to The failure of the strategy of course was the basic cause of British defeat and the independence of the United States. Instead of the restoration of Good Government, there was surrender as Good Americans trickled north to live among the bogs and mosquitoes of Upper Canada. Why did General Robertson and his fellow generals fail? The British army was no stranger to the pacification of hostile subjects, in Ireland and Scotland, and it was generally successful at the task. In America it was numerous and well supplied, and won more battles than it lost. The key to success, however, lay in the Good Americans. Without sufficient local support the army could not sustain or restore constitutional government, and without the ability to maintain order a police function it could not restore peace. The Good Americans, as it turned out, were not up to the job, and professionals like Robertson could not do it for them. For their pains, the Good Americans exist as caricatures in American history, like the fiendish John Graves Simcoe, the notable villain (and only interesting character) in the recent US TV series, Turn! Robert Selkirk Bothwell, historian, professor, was educated at the University of Toronto and Harvard University, where he received a PhD in He began teaching at the University of Toronto in 1970, and was appointed full professor in He was director of the university s international relations program from 1995 to Bothwell s writing is mainly in the area of international relations and on Canada s relations with Quebec. Recent books include: The Penguin History of Canada (2006); Alliance and Illusion (2007), a study of Canadian foreign relations from 1945 to 1984; and Your Country, My Country (2015), an analysis of the tangled connections between Canada and the United States. $20 members, $25 non-members, includes wine and refreshments. Make out cheque to: ACO Port Hope PEACE, and mail/deliver to 8 King St., Port Hope, L1A 2R4. (INCLUDE AND TEL. #) 12 th Evening with the ACO. DON T MISS THIS FILM WHICH WE VE BEEN TREMENDOUSLY FORTUNATE TO GET! Finn with an Oyster: The Story Behind Toronto s City Hall Wednesday November 30 th, 7pm Sculthorpe Theatre, Capitol Toronto City Hall is an iconic building that needs no introduction. Yet the events leading up to the construction of Revell s civic masterpiece have largely been forgotten. This film by Michael Kainer, sponsored by the ACO, addresses that void and explores the roles that major players such as Nathan Phillips, the former Toronto Mayor, Eric Arthur, the professional advisor for the international competition and Viljo Revell, the building s architect, played in achieving this inspirational civic building. The film has been nominated for a Heritage Toronto Media Award. Michael Kainer, creator of the film, will be present at the screening, and will be available afterwards to answer questions. $10 members, $15 non-members. Capitol s cash Bar. Make out cheque to ACO Port Hope Oyster, and mail /deliver to 8 King St., Port Hope, L1A 2R4 (INCLUDE AND TEL.#).

4 ACO Matters September 2016 ACO Summer Appreciation BBQ Through the Lens of Matt Desbarbieux A Diana and John Joynt, our hosts, greet Phil Goldsmith. lthough August 11 will go down as one of the hottest summer days of the year, it did not deter nearly 140 members (160 had signed on) from enjoying a summer BBQ at the home of Diana and John Joynt north of Cold Springs. Their Regency Cottage style bungalow with extensive surrounding gardens sits on a hilltop which affords spectacular views of the Northumberland Hills and Lake Ontario. This is an annual event hosted by the board in appreciation of our membership. Many thanks to board members and volunteers for their support and assistance with the bar/food service, with transportation, and the set-up and take-down of equipment. Again, we wish to express our gratitude to the Joynts as our hosts. Peter Kedwell, Chair Social Committee Chairman Phil Goldsmith says a few words

5 We Hear from Our Readers: Hi Patsy, I enjoyed your informative piece on Port Hope street names. I am frequently asked about Little Hope Street and the story we heard was that it was originally Hope Street in Englishtown, named after Col. Hope whose name adorned both the town of Port Hope and the street in Port Hope. After Englishtown became part of Port Hope they tidied up by calling the smaller street by its description, Little Hope Street. Can t vouch for the authenticity of that account, but it seems reasonable. Our street sign has attracted attention from people surprised by the name including a Toronto Star photographer a few years ago. Jon Ed How Well Do You Know Your High Street? WALTON STREET QUESTIONNAIRE (From Pine Down to Mill Street) 1) Where is there a plaque commemorating Peter Schultz? 2) What was originally above the now vacated Royal Bank on the corner of John St? 3) The partnership of the architect who designed Ontario Place also designed the Bank of Montreal on Walton in What is his name? 4) Which was the building from which William Hunt (later known as the Great Farini) performed his aerial stunt in 1859? To where? 5) Where can you see 18 HG 45 above a door and what does HG stand for? 6) Which buildings were built by brothers in the Smith family? 7) Where was the Evening Guide (taken over by Northumberland Today) first printed? By whom? 8) Which building was saved from destruction and restored by Peter Schultz in 1963? What is the name of its style? 9) Where did the railway run across the street? And what was its name? 10) Which building was designed by William Thomas who designed the St. Lawrence Hall and St. Michael s Cathedral in Toronto? Shots of the Barbecue in progress. ANSWERS: 1) The St. Lawrence Apartments building 2) The Opera House, or Music Hall. 3) Eberhard Zeidler 4) Walton, the riverside block containing Gould s Shoes. The high-wire ran across the river and connected with a building in Farini Park, no longer there. 5) The s.e. corner of Walton and Queen. H G stands for Hiram Gillett, the builder. 6) The riverside block, the E.Smith block at 35-46, and the original building which stood at 48-60, which burned and was replaced by this one. 7) It was originally printed by Peter Schultz in the building which now houses Sound Hearing Solutions, 118 Walton. 8) St. Lawrence Apartments. It was then the St. Lawrence Hotel. The style is Italianate 9) At Lent s Lane it emerged on its route northwards, crossed Walton Street and ran up Cavan Street. It was the Midland Railway. 10) 1 Walton Street, the building that now houses Gusto s.

6 ACO Matters September 2016 Street Names, Part 2 John Ed (page 5) is right about his Little Hope Street address. In 1819 the Township of Hope was called after Colonel Henry Hope, a British army officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Two years after the War he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec. What the reasoning was behind the choice of his name we do not know as he had never visited the area. The Township s chief port then adopted the name of Port Hope, logically enough. And two streets, the smaller being Little Hope Street to distinguish it from the longer one on the east side of town, were also called after the colonel. [Once again we have drawn on Harold Reeve s research notes on the origins of Port Hope street names, which appeared in the Evening Guide of 1968, and are to be found in the Port Hope Archives.] Hope Street The division line between Lots 4 and 5. In 1819 it was decided that the old road leading from the Cavan (Rice Lake) Road was too muddy, crooked and inconvenient. Hope Street was opened to replace the old road. The traveller from the north could then get into town by way of Ward Street. At this time the land east of Hope Street was Hope Township, so the obvious name for this boundary road was Hope Street. And here are some more streets that might interest you. Close-up of the 1853 map of Port Hope, Canada West. Baldwin After William Warren Baldwin, who bought Town Plot 91 containing 9 ½ acres in 1818 for $2000 [we suspect this should be pounds, not dollars, as pounds were in use until pound equalled just over $4. Ed.). Baldwin came to Canada from England in 1798 and practiced medicine in Toronto. He later went into legal practice. He was a Member of the Legislative Council and died in His son, Robert Baldwin, a partner in his father s law practice, was the author of the Baldwin Act, which gave municipalities local government in At his death in 1858 Baldwin was reputed to be worth a million dollars (a huge sum in those days), a considerable portion of which had been inherited from the Hon. Peter Russell. Baldwin s aunt, Barbara Baldwin, married Daniel Sullivan before coming to Canada. One of the Sullivan daughters married Robert Baldwin ( who was her cousin), and the other T. G. Ridout. Sullivan Street. Their son, Judge Sullivan, gave his name to this street. Barrett Barrett is called after William Barrett who came to Port Hope in He and his son built a mill by the river on this street and also supplied power from the falls which then existed, for several satellite industries. Father and son were the builders of Barrett s Terrace, and the octagonal house on Martha Street was their home. [The house was influenced by the philosophy of the American phrenologist, Orson... continued onto next page

7 (Continued from previous page) Fowler, highly eccentric but very popular at the time, who had written A Home for All: or the Gravel Wall and Octagon Mode of Building in New York. Following Fowler s advice, the house was constructed of a strange mix of pebbles, rubble, horsehair, stucco and lime, known as the Fowler mix. Ed.] Bedford Jonathon Bedford, with his wife and six children, settled at Dale, north of Port Hope, in Stephen, Ephraim, Jonathon and David were in the Durham militia during the war of Luke, a grandson of Jonathon Sr., was active in the town s affairs in the 1840s and 50s, and it was after him that the street was named. Brown This Street was given by John Brown so that those attending the Methodist Church could have easier access. The church at that time was on the opposite side of the street from the present church. According to the town minutes, Brown Street was to be made passable for wagons in A volatile and highly energetic personality, John Brown came to Port Hope from Ireland in 1818 and spent the rest of his life here. Soon he was running a store, distillery, blacksmith shop, flour and grist mills. He was president and principal owner of the Harbour Company, and frequently elected to the Board of Police (the council at that time). He was Durham s M.P. in 1830 and With his feuds and shenanigans he made Port Hope an interesting place in which to live; and with his enterprise he did much to lift the village from its primitive state. Robertson After James Robertson, , who came to Port Hope in His tannery and house were on this street. He was active on the Board of Police (the original Town Council). He had a dispute with the above John Brown over the boundary line of stores he was building on the south side of Walton Street. The walls put up during the day were pulled down by Brown at night. This problem was solved by Robertson patrolling the wall at night with a shotgun. About Your Membership 1. All Memberships are renewable on or before January 1st of each year.
