Editorials - André Delvaux Academy Unflagging ambition and motivation! In these troubled times, culture, and with it creation, continues to play an essential role. And film, in all its forms, has its rightful place on this stage. Whether it entertains or asks questions, whether it makes us think, tremble or laugh, like so many other artistic disciplines, it gives us a range of insights into the world and into ourselves. A booming film industry also brings a particular gravitas to the professionals who make up the André Delvaux Academy, since they will be called upon again this year to choose between 72 films of all genres and to cast their votes. A vote that will lead to the presentation of no fewer than 21 Magritte awards during the Ceremony on the 4 th of February 2017 to the many talents that make up our community. For the André Delvaux Academy, 2017 will be a year of continuity, confirming our commitment to the short film with, for the second consecutive year, the award of a specific Magritte for a short animated film in addition to the award for the live action short film, as well as our firm undertaking, through the 6

Curtain up on the 7th Magritte for the Best Flemish Film, to highlight and share our neighbour s flourishing film industry. But the Academy also wants to move forward, by reaching out to the public both upstream and downstream of the Ceremony on the 4 th of February. We will also be stepping up our cooperation with our film distribution partners to allow the public to see or rediscover the films in the running for a Magritte Award. As such, the Academy has signed an agreement with the Quadrature du Cercle (the network of cinema programmers of the cultural centres) to screen the winning films in the month following the Ceremony. Other promotional campaigns will also be rolled out, before the Ceremony, at several film festivals and at the Riches-Claires Cultural Centre in particular. The Ceremony on the 4 th of February puts the spotlight on films and the professionals who produce and create them. A celebration orchestrated once again by Be tv, and supported also by all the partners and sponsors who have signed up for the event. On behalf of the Academy, we sincerely thank them for their efforts. Bringing films to life by keeping them present in our minds, whether fiction or documentary, regardless of format or duration. Showing the craft that our film makers, producers, actors and technicians inject into their work. Defending all the measures that allow such diversity of creation. Our ambitions remains unflagging for this 7 th edition of the Magritte Awards! Patrick Quinet and Luc Jabon, Co-Presidents of the André Delvaux Academy 7

Editorials - André Delvaux Academy The age of reason? While, for the dictionaries, the number 7 is simply and prosaically the natural integer following 6 and preceding 8, it is also commonly considered as the age of reason. I m not sure whether this is something we should wish the Magritte Awards, which are blowing out their 7 th candle this year, which are at the service of the 7 th art, and which have, by some lucky coincidence, directly or indirectly, awarded prizes to 77 films to date. Or, on the contrary, whether we should wish them to preserve that element of madness that has enabled them to harmoniously combine the sense of celebration, pride and derision we have witnessed so far. At the beginning of December 2016, at the time of writing, little information is filtering on the next ceremony, the voting has not yet started and, logically, the names of the presenters of the awards, and especially the winners, are still a complete mystery. However, two names are already known to all: that of the President of the 7 th ceremony first of all. Winner of an audience award at the second edition of the Magritte Awards, Virginie Efira is at the height of an exemplary and atypical career. 8

Adulated by the public in each of her metamorphoses, for this fine actress, the year 2016 will have been a breakthrough year with Elle by Paul Verhoeven then Victoria by Justine Triet. At the time of writing, another name has been revealed, that of the Ceremony s host, Anne-Pascale Clairembourg. Winner of the Magritte Award for Most Promising Actress in 2013, it was on stage that she made her mark in 2016 with Tristesses. One of the hottest tickets in town at the Avignon Theatre Festival, this play was voted best play of the year by the Critics Prize. The choice of Virginia Efira as President of the Ceremony, and that of Anne-Pascale Clairembourg as its host are emblematic of a Belgian cinema that is proud of its talents and its diversity. Emblematic also of this desire never to be confined to a a certain format, to be pigeon-holed, to follow a particular school of thought or credo. Our talents reach beyond all borders, whether between comedies and art house films, between the Flemish Community and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, between theatre and film, between film and television. In this virtuous circle, which feeds on differences, there was a distinct lack of television series produced and made in our country. This void has been filled with La Trêve and Ennemi public that open new perspectives to our professionals. We are proud to support 50 years of cinematographic creation in French-speaking Belgium. To tell directors, producers, authors, technicians and of course the actors that they can be prophets in their own country and to recognise their talent. To emphasise also that there is too little opportunity to use the female form for these professions. And that is another reason why the choices of Virginie Efira and Anne-Pascale Clairembourg are emblematic. Long live the Magritte Film Awards! Frédéric Delcor, General Secretary of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation Long live the Magritte Awards 9

Be tv - 7 th Magritte Awards Ceremony #magritteducinema Staged by Samuel Tilman and Emmanuel Dekoninck Directed by Vincent Gustin Produced by José Bouquiaux

7 years celebrating the achievements of the 7 th art in Belgium Be tv has always supported the 7 th Art, and the Belgian film industry in particular. This support is reflected both in its programming and in its investment as a co-producer. Each year, it co-produces more than 20 films. It is with immense pride and untiring enthusiasm that Be tv will once again collaborate with the André Delvaux Academy, continuing its unbroken tradition, to organise, produce and broadcast the 7 th Magritte Awards Ceremony, live and unencrypted, on the 4 th of February. The ceremony will also be streamed live on the Be tv website. Once again this year, the diversity of our film industry and the many talents that make it up, will be represented by the 72 films nominated for this 7 th edition. These include Joachim Lafosse s L Economie du couple, La fille inconnue by the Dardenne Brothers, Les premiers, les derniers by Bouli Lanners, Keeper by Guillaume Senez, and the documentaries La terre abandonnée by Gilles Laurent and Pablo Munoz Gomez s Intrégration Inch Allah, which will also be shown on Be tv as part of the special three-day programming it has put together during the weekend of the Ceremony. Finally, Be tv is delighted to entrust the reins of this 7 th Ceremony to a 100% female duo. The President, the radiant Virginie Efira and the Host, the elegant actress and comedienne, Anne-Pascale Clairembourg. Long live the Magritte Awards and the 7 th Art in Belgium! 12 Virginie Efira, President of the 7 th Magritte Awards Ceremony Virginie Efira is one of those artists who boast a rare quality, an aura that betrays a true kindness and a sincere humility. A passionate personality who can arouse passion in others, Virginie is the rising star of Belgian and French cinema. Her freshness, her talent and her inimitable spontaneity make her a witty and endearing personality. Moving in 20 ans d écart with Pierre Ninet, a courageous yet flirtatious mother with Benoît Poelvoorde in Une famille à louer, the screen beauty also managed to make Jean Dujardin fall for her charms in Un homme à la hauteur. The actress has a knack for picking great stories and box office success. The year 2016 once again marks a turning point in her career. After several years playing comic parts, another facet of her personality has been brought out by directors who have challenged her and taken her to a deeper level. In the shoes off Victoria, a film that won rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival in competition during Critics Week, she is radiant and disarming. In Elle, by Paul Verhoeven, she is quite simply transformed. Her performance is masterful. Virginie no longer only makes you laugh or smile, her presence blows you away, leaving everyone speechless! It is with immense respect and pride that the André Delvaux Academy and Be tv are pleased to welcome Virginie Efira as President of the 7 th Magritte Awards Ceremony. On Saturday, the 4 th of February, she will proudly represent Belgian cinema with her natural brilliance, authenticity and humour when she announces: I declare the 7 th Awards Ceremony open.

The President of the 7 th Ceremony 13

Anne-Pascale Clairembourg, Host This year, the Ceremony has a female host. Be tv and the André Delvaux Academy are pleased to welcome the host of the 2017 Ceremony, Anne-Pascale Clairembourg. A Magritte award for Most Promising Actress for Mobile Home in 2013, presenter of the Magritte award for Most Promising Actor in 2014, Anne-Pascale Clairembourg continues is writing another chapter of her history with the Magritte Awards by donning the host s hat for the 7 th Magritte Awards Ceremony. Tell us a little about yourself. My parents took me to the theatre from an early age and instilled this passion in me, so theatre quickly became part of my daily life. And I just love films! Films are my world, I m a bit of a film buff! The two worlds collided during my acting course at the IAD (Institut des Arts de Diffusion), where I began to participate in film projects. Since then, these two universes have continually been intertwined for me. I actually met François Pirot, who directed Mobile Home, at the IAD, but met Jaco Van Dormael at the theatre!

INTERVIEW How did you react when you were asked to host the Magritte Awards? Do I have to tell the truth? (laughs) The truth is, I almost ran away. But on a more serious note, I was very surprised, and at the same time very curious to know more. What tipped the balance for me was when I realised that it was going to be a real team effort. With the producer, with the director, with the authors. I needed this strength, to feel that we were going to create this Ceremony together. This kind of opportunity is rare and it would have been a shame to refuse it out of fear. Beyond the personal opportunity, it s a great challenge! What film is your personal favourite? I have a bit of a soft spot for Mike Leigh s Secrets and Lies and for his work in general: it s smart, funny and yet poignant. The actors, mostly theatre actors, are all incredible, from the smallest walk-on part to the leading role. Among the films that have marked me, I would cite Bloody Sunday by Paul Greengrass; Nothing by Vincenzo Natali; Cashback by Sean Ellis and more recently The Broken Circle Breakdown by Felix van Groeningen. But there are so many genres and directors that I find exciting, it s hard to name just the one! What kind of Host are you going to be? I can t reveal everything, you have to keep the element of surprise! Above all, I want to highlight the artists, give pleasure to people and share my passion for film. What drives you? Since I graduated, I have had the chance to work in completely different styles. Switching from Tristesses (the creation of Anne-Cécile Vandalem which was performed at the Avignon Theatre Festival 2016) to Feydeau means working a very different range. Adapting to a film director or a stage director, trying to decipher their language and capturing it, understanding and being in tune with your partners those are the things that drive me as an actress. You are shaken in your convictions, in your way of doing things, and it is really rewarding. For you, what is Belgian cinema? For me, it is a unique cinema, unique in its kind. It is often defined as social, earthy. Personally, I find it very diverse, it is raw but also naive, poetic, creative, delirious The Dardenne brothers, Bouli Lanners, Jaco Van Dormael, Yolande Moreau, Benoit Mariage, Vanja d Alcantara there you already have a huge spectrum of talents! I ve been lucky enough to work with Jaco (Le tout nouveau testament), Géraldine Doignon (De leur vivant), François Pirot, Silvestre Sbille and more recently with Matthieu Donck (on the series La Trêve and the short film Partouze): I m convinced that Belgian cinema has a bright future ahead of it! What are your future projects? From March onwards, I ll be touring France against with the play Tristesses. After that I ll be working with Alexandre Trocki in a play written by Thomas Gunzig and staged by David Strosberg. 15

Behind the scenes at the Magritte Awards Behind the scenes... The Magritte Awards Ceremony is also broadcast live on television. More than 80 professionals are involved in the filming of this prestigious Ceremony. Behind the scenes, you have the director and his 5 assistants, the director of photography, the cameramen, the sound technicians, the floor managers and, last but not least, the continuity supervisors. The role of the continuity supervisor: ensure that the live broadcast runs smoothly. Consistency of the shots, follow-up of the cue sheet, respect of the timing, these are some of their main tasks. The continuity supervisor is in a way the director s assistant. For the Magritte Awards, a duo of experts is at the helm: Réjane Duriau, (continuity supervisor for The Voice, Cap 48) and Nathalie Husson (continuity supervisor of the César Award Ceremony for many years, of the Victories de la musique and several World Cup finals). Réjane Duriau and Nathalie Husson have been the two official continuity supervisors of the Ceremony since its inception.

THE CONTINUITY SUPERVISOR Nathalie Husson reveals the secrets of preparing for the 7 th Magritte Awards: What is the role of the continuity supervisors of the Magritte Awards Ceremony? Upstream, I gather all the technical information necessary to organise the cue sheet of the TV broadcast. Like a scribe, my job is to reference, for each sequence, the needs in terms of sound, image, light, text, timing, camera or even equipment. For example, if a choreography is planned, the music, images, lighting and timing all have to be synchronised. It s all about anticipation and respecting the timing. Our Bible is called the cue sheet. During the Ceremony, I oversee that everything runs smoothly and its continuity. On the basis of the cue sheet, my role will be to warn all key people, such as the Host, the producer, the directors, about what will happen, manage the entry of the presenters, the rehearsals, and to handle the technical specificities associated with it. While this year, it is a female Host who is entrusted with the presentation of the 7 th Ceremony, Réjane has been tasked with directing the 4 portable cameras towards the personalities in the room, towards the nominees according to what was planned in the cue sheet. Continuity supervisor is a profession where you have to be alert at all times, that calls for a great deal of self-control and reactivity. We often associate the profession of continuity supervisor with that of the conductor but also of 3 rd eye of the director Yes that s exactly it! It is a work in the shadows, but it is instrumental because it facilitates the work of the director. Our role is to anticipate, prepare the cameras, light, sound to facilitate the work of the director. With Vincent Gustin and Rejane, we form a fantastic and, above all, a very effective trio. We have some great surprises in store for you again this year! 17

The André Delvaux Academy #magritteducinema The André Delvaux Academy, founded in 2010, created the Magritte Cinema Awards Ceremony to pay tribute to the talents of Belgian cinema who have contributed to the fame and influence of our cinema in Belgium and internationally. Each year, following a voting procedure in two rounds, members of the Academy, more than 800 Belgian film professionals, vote for the winners in the 21 eligible categories. On the 4 th of February, at the 7 th Magritte Awards Ceremony, 21 awards be presented, along with an Honorary Magritte awarded by the André Delvaux Academy to an emblematic personality of the 7 th Art in order to honour his or her cinematographic career. 24

Projection of the Magritte Award films For this 7 th edition, the André Delvaux Academy has partnered with the Les Riches-Claires cultural centre in Brussels for the second time since the creation of the Magritte Awards to allow the general public to discover the films in competition in a convivial and festive setting! In 2017, films nominated in the categories Best Film and Best First Film will be screened at the Riches-Claires between Sunday, the 15 th of January and Wednesday, the 18 th of January An opportunity for the public to discover, as the professionals cast their vote, all the films by Belgian directors competing for the coveted statuettes, and perhaps to meet the future winners during these screenings! Some lucky spectators will also have the chance, via a draw, to attend the 7 th Magritte Awards Ceremony. In addition, following the partnership with the Quadrature du Cercle (the network of cinema programmers in cultural centres) in 2016, the cultural centres of Wallonia and Brussels will be organising screenings of all the award-winning predominantly Belgian films for six weeks after the 7 th Ceremony. Members of the teams will be invited to participate in these screenings to allow, whenever possible, encounters with the spectators! These large-scale events are supplemented by screenings organised by several festivals, which programme, on an ad hoc or more regular basis, showings of the films of the current edition: the Be Film Festival, which takes place at the end of December, screens every year in the framework of two special sessions, all the short films selected at the Magritte Awards. In 2016, a screening dedicated to short animated films was also organised by FIDEC, in Huy, as part of its programming for Le Jour le plus Court on the 21 st of December. The Magritte Awards are also being exported: the Festival Paris Courts Devant, held in early December, organised a retrospective of the Magritte short film award winners in Paris in 2016, while, since 2015, the association Cannes Cinéma, has been organising an annual carte blanche in March, dedicated to some of the Magritte Award winners that have not yet been widely distributed in France. 25

72 films in competition The Academy makes an inventory of the Belgian fiction and animation films recognised by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation released between 16 October 2015 and 15 October For the 2017 Magritte Awards, this represents 17 predominantly Belgian films and 21 minority co-productions. The predominantly Belgian films section includes the feature films of Belgian directors and the co-productions section the films made by foreign directors. In addition, 16 short films, 8 live action and 8 animated, and 8 documentaries have been selected for this 7 th edition by the selection committees. Since 2016, the short film has been awarded two distinct prizes: Best animation short and Best live action short. Finally, in the category of Best Flemish Film, there are 10 films by Flemish directors in the competition. In total, there are 72 films in the running for this 7th edition of the Magritte Awards. The organisation of the vote The voting procedure takes place in two rounds: the first in December allows the members of the Academy to vote for three candidates in each section and determines the nominees; the second takes place during the second half of January. For the first round, 30 Belgian directors and/or screenwriters, around a 100 actors and actresses and more than 150 technicians can be nominated and receive votes. For the actresses and actors, eligibility is extended to films not eligible for the Magritte for Best Film or Best Foreign Film in co-production but where the Belgian actresses or actors play important roles. The Board of Directors of the André Delvaux Academy wished to allow voters to honour their performance in these films as well. All members of the Academy have received a box set containing virtually all the eligible films on a DVD in order to allow them to vote in the best possible conditions. 26

The statuette A creation by Xavier Lust For the past 7 years, the Magritte Awards have rewarded the best of Belgian cinema. And who says reward, says statuette! If at the Oscar, the winners leave with a statuette representing the silhouette of Oscar, and are presented with a palm in Cannes, at the Magritte Awards, they come away with a part of the universe of its inspirer, René Magritte. An original creation by Xavier Lust, a Belgian designer, the Magritte Awards Cinéma statuette is 100% made in Belgium. Inspired by a poster created by the painter René Magritte for a film festival in 1958 entitled unforgettable moments of cinema. Each year, 22 Magritte statuettes are made to reward the talents of our film industry. 27

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Talents Dinner The 3 rd edition of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Talents Dinner took place on the 7th of November at the Boghossian Foundation - Villa Empain in Brussels. This year, Jaeger-LeCoultre and the André Delvaux Academy were keen to showcase the career and performances of four young talents, Aurora Marion, Babetida Sadjo, Jean-Jacques Rausin and Thomas Mustin under the watchful eye of their patron Natacha Régnier, winner of a César Award for Most Promising Actress and of a Best Actress Award in Cannes for La vie rêvée des anges, who was keen to lend them her support. During this dinner, the talents and their patron were able to discuss their respective careers and their shared passion for the cinema. 28

To confirm their interest, they must complete on the site of the Academy a membership newsletter to be returned to the association. In case of doubt on the eligibility of a member, the final decision on whether to accept or not the application is down to the Board of Directors of the association or, by decision of the Board, the Bureau [election committee]. Its decision shall be final and shall not be substantiated. Article 2 Any Belgian person (or living in Belgium for at least 5 years or having been domiciled in Belgium for a minimum of 15 years) who works in the film industry, but does not fall under the conditions set out in Article 1 as well as any Belgian personality who wishes to enter the Academy may submit a written application for membership to the Academy, in which case the Bureau or the Board will assess its relevance. Its decision shall be final and shall not be substantiated. Article 3 Each associate member of the Academy pays an annual fee to the André Delvaux Academy non-profit association. The sets can only be sent out within Europe and any request to send outside Belgium will be subject to a surcharge of 5 euros including VAT, as a contribution towards postage. If a member wishes to enrol without receiving the set, they may do so by paying a reduced fee, set for 2016, at 50 euros including VAT. Associate members benefit from the Academy s activities, participate in them in accordance with the statutes and regulations and are up to date with their dues. Article 4 Supporting membership of the André Delvaux Academy, giving the right to receive a Magritte Awards DVD set, is open to foreign film professionals who make an explicit application via the website of the Academy and whose Bureau considers that the candidacy is relevant. The amount of the fee is fixed for the year 2016 at 150 euros including VAT. Being a supporting member does not automatically entitle you to a place at the Magritte Awards Ceremony. Article 5 Any member of the Academy who has not paid the annual fee by the due date will not receive the voting materials for the current edition or the various written and audiovisual materials published by the Academy to facilitate the vote, and will not participate in said vote. Article 6 To enable them to participate in the activities of the Academy, including voting for the Magritte awards, members are invited to keep the Academy informed in writing of any change of postal address or address. Article 7 As part of the activities of the Academy, including the organisation of the vote for the award of the Magrittes, some information about the members of the Academy is subject to automated processing. The list of regularly enrolled Academy members may be made public and visible on the Academy website. Their contact information cannot however be communicated to any third party, including to a member of the Academy. By exception, the list of members and their contact information may be disclosed by the association, as part of the realisation of the Academy s activities, only to companies entrusted by the Academy by written contract with the performance of certain tasks requiring the availability of this list for the completion of those tasks. The companies involved in this case will sign a specific confidentiality clause specific to such information, and establish to the extent possible buffer systems for the effective use of information contained in this list. Academy members wishing to resign from the Academy must submit a written request to the Board of the non-profit association. The resignation does not give rise to the repayment of dues.
