2 DISOBEDIENT BODIES: J.W.ANDERSON AT THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD 16 MARCH 18 JUNE 2017 I m obsessed by 20th-century British art. I go to Wakefield whenever I can. I have a [Ben] Nicholson and a [Keith] Vaughan. I m also a big ceramics collector.potters like Lucie Rie, Hans Coper and John Ward. Jonathan Anderson, The Telegraph, 2015 Jonathan Anderson, one of the world s most innovative and critically acclaimed contemporary fashion designers, will respond to Wakefield s impressive collection of modern British art in a major new exhibition, that will explore the human form in art, fashion and design. Anderson will collaborate with Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald of 6a architects to present this exhibition, which will unfold in a series of contrasting experiences. Figurative sculptures by artists including: Jean Arp, Louise Bourgeois, Lynn Chadwick, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Sarah Lucas, Henry Moore, Magali Reus and Dorothea Tanning will be brought into direct dialogue with fashion pieces by designers such as Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Rei Kawakubo of Commes des Garçons, Helmut Lang and Issey Miyake. Design and craft items will include ceramics by Hans Coper and lamps by Isamu Noguchi. The personal selection is shaped by Anderson s long-standing passion for modern art (from the mid-20th century) and the underlying questions of gender that have been posed by his own fashion collections. HOWARD HODGKIN 29 JUNE 8 OCTOBER 2017 (India) I couldn t work without it Howard Hodgkin Howard Hodgkin (b.1932) is widely regarded as one of the world s greatest living painters and has been a central figure in contemporary art for over half a century. Programmed to coincide with 2017 UK-India Year of Culture, this will be the first significant exhibition to explore the enduring influence of India on Hodgkin s work, a place he has returned to almost annually for the last 50 years. Approximately 35 works will be exhibited, from Hodgkin s earliest India-inspired paintings of the 1960s through to new works due to be painted during the artist s forthcoming trip to India in the winter of 2016/17. Showing work made over this expansive time period will offer an in-depth overview of Hodgkin s relationship to India and reveal the evolution of his pictorial language - from the figurative work in the 1960s through to the dynamic, gestural style of the last 20 years. As a painter of memories and experiences, many of the works capture the sensory impressions of India - from fierce blazing sunsets to the heavy oppressive rains of the landscapes and cities he has visited, and portraits of the people the artist has befriended. Photographs and documents from Hodgkin s personal archive, including material relating to his 1992 British Council commission in New Delhi with the architect Charles Correa, will be shown for the first time.
3 ALINA SZAPOCZNIKOW 20 OCTOBER 2017 FEBRUARY 2018 This will be the first UK retrospective of the work of the much-overlooked Polish artist Alina Szapocznikow ( ), whose elaborately constructed sculptures remain as powerfully resonant today as when they were first made. Szapocznikow s career was cut short by her premature death in 1973 at the age 47 but her work has been reappraised internationally in the last decade. A chronological display will highlight how the artist s work developed from classically figurative sculptures to her later awkward objects which are politically charged and overlaid with Surrealist and Pop Art influences. The exhibition will include works incorporating Szapocznikow s characteristic use of cast body parts, many of which she transformed into everyday objects like lamps or ashtrays. It will feature over 50 works created between 1956 and 1972 including sculpture, drawings, and photography, the exhibition draws on loans from private and public collections, including major institutions in Poland. Szapocznikow radically reconceptualized sculpture as an imprint not only of memory but also of her own body, related to her traumatic experiences during WWII, as a Polish Jew, imprisoned for over 10 months in Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps. After the war Szapocznikow trained as a sculptor in Prague and later in Paris where she first came into contact with the work of artists such as Jean Arp, Alberto Giacometti and Henry Moore. She returned to Poland in 1951 and represented her country in the 1962 Venice Biennale. COLLECTION INSPIRED EXHIBITIONS ANTHEA HAMILTON REIMAGINES KETTLE S YARD 17 SEPTEMBER MARCH 2017 For this new exhibition, Turner-Prize nominee Anthea Hamilton has reinstalled Kettle s Yard at The Hepworth Wakefield, introducing a series of her own art work alongside pieces by a series of international contemporary artists. Many of the contemporary works are newly created by Hamilton in response to the collection. New works include a functional cabinet and a spiral staircase, created to display objects from Kettle s Yard, a Kimono piece inspired by a Christopher Wood painting and large, circular mats, made in Swaziland by local artisans. Significantly, Hamilton has invited several British and international artists, with whom she has either previously worked, or whose work is important to her, to contribute to the new installation, to echo the way that Kettle s Yard founder Jim Ede assembled his collection (objects and art works acquired through his friends and acquaintances). Collaborators include: French artist Laëtitia Badaut Haussmann; British artist Nicholas Byrne; German artist Daniel Sinsel and the celebrated American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The installation fundamentally explores Hamilton s interest in how our environment shapes the way we see objects and our understanding and experience of art. The careful arrangement of art and objects in Kettle s Yard as outlined in Jim Ede s book, A Way of Life (a written and photographic document of each detail and aesthetic relationship in Kettle s Yard) resonates with Hamilton s own interest in the choreographing of space and objects.
4 WAKEFIELD: A CONTEMPORARY COLLECTION OPENS 24 SEPTEMBER 2016 (The purpose of Wakefield s Collection is) to keep in touch with modern art, in its relations to modern life. Founding Chairman, Councillor Alfred Carr, 1934 This exhibition celebrates the founding ethos of Wakefield s collection - to be a firm supporter of contemporary art. Today, that original simple vision still holds true. For more than 80 years the collection has grown through acquisitions and gifts of work by important contemporary artists including: Roger Fry and the Camden Town Group, and Modernists such as Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson. It will show how The Hepworth Wakefield has continued this tradition. A gift of paintings from Sir Alan Bowness, through the Art Fund will be exhibited and includes works by Alan Davie and significant abstract artists of the 1960s and 70s such as John Golding and John Holland. Eva Rothschild s sculpture Wandering Palm, 2011, will be displayed for the first time since it premiered in the gallery s inaugural exhibition by Rothschild five years ago. HEPWORTH AND MOORE IN THE WAKEFIELD PERMANENT ART COLLECTION OPENS 30 MARCH 2017 British Modernists Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore grew up and studied in and around Wakefield. Two new displays drawn from Wakefield s Permanent Art Collection will celebrate their careers and reveal their personal interests. Local families will work with the gallery s award-winning learning team to develop a child-led interactive interpretation of Moore s work. The Hepworth display will feature a series of sculptures tracing her whole career, from the early carvings of the s, to the iconic stringed forms emerging during the 1940s and her later, large-scale marble sculptures. For the first time, Barbara Hepworth s private library (which forms part of the Hepworth Family Gift) will be publicly displayed, as part of a collaborative PhD research project between The Hepworth Wakefield and Huddersfield University. Hepworth s love of and engagement with the decorative arts will also be revealed, with a display of her fabric and domestic designs.
