1 SUMMER 2011 Yorkshire s major new art gallery Free Admission
2 WELCOME THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD OPENING 21 MAY 2011 The Hepworth Wakefield is Britain s major new art gallery, and the region s new social hub, designed by the award-winning David Chipperfield Architects. It embodies the forward looking spirit of civic pride, confidence and ambition we have in Wakefield, and is at the heart of its physical and social regeneration. The gallery celebrates the region s heritage as the birth place of modern British sculpture through the achievements of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore two of the most important artists of the 20 th century, who were born and grew up in the Wakefield district. We are building on our artistic legacy and we look forward to inspiring and enriching the lives of residents in the region and welcoming our many visitors from all parts of the UK and abroad. Cllr Peter Box, Leader of Wakefield Council We have an exciting programme of contemporary art, collection displays and events to celebrate our opening year. One of our highlights is a collection of sculptures by Hepworth that reveals new aspects of her creativity, including her formative years in Wakefield and the influence of the Yorkshire landscape on her work. The gallery also exhibits Wakefield s nationally important art collection alongside major loans from Tate and the Arts Council Collection. I invite you to explore the gallery s ten superb exhibition spaces and be inspired by displays of historic and modern art as well as a major exhibition by one of the UK s most acclaimed sculptors, Eva Rothschild. Families can enjoy the gallery garden, play the waterside park, enjoy locally sourced food in the café. Don t forget to join as a THW Member to be a crucial part of all we do. We look forward to welcoming you and seeing you regularly. Simon Wallis, Director, The Hepworth Wakefield
3 EXHIBITION GALLERIES Eva Rothschild, Natural Beauty, Courtesy Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London, The Modern Institute, Glasgow, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich, 303 Gallery, New York EVA ROTHSCHILD: HOT TOUCH 21 MAY 9 OCTOBER 2011 Hot Touch presents a group of new and recent sculptures and photographs by Eva Rothschild. Her sculptures are made from a range of materials including fabric, leather and wood, bringing together the hand-made and the industrially produced. The works often combine the forms and strategies of modernist art squares, triangles, holes and repetition with an array of visual associations and symbols, such as totemic columns of piled heads and draped snakes. The exhibition is accompanied by a new publication with an essay by Prof. Anne Wagner, author of Mother Stone: The Vitality of Modern British Sculpture (Yale University Press, 2005). To coincide with the exhibition, Yorkshire Sculpture Park is showing Rothschild s work Someone & Someone, Eva Rothschild will be in conversation on Thursday 16 June, pm, 5 ( 3). To book events@hepworthwakefield.org or call Eva Rothschild: Hot Touch is supported by This exploration of the power and meaning of objects produces an encounter between the minimal and the magical. Leaning against walls, suspended in mid-air, or balancing impossibly, Rothschild s sculptures have an ambiguous and powerful presence, exploring universally recognised forms and symbols. 4 COLLECTION DISPLAY THE HEPWORTH PLASTERS The gallery is also home to a unique collection of work by Hepworth, given to Wakefield by the Hepworth Family. These sculptures are full-size prototypes, the majority made in plaster for casting in bronze. An adjoining display explores Hepworth s working processes and includes tools, materials, photographs and film of the artist in her studio. These works are exhibited alongside major loans from private and national collections, including Tate, Arts Council Collection and The British Council Collection. Our opening displays include J.M.W. Turner s watercolour of Wakefield s Chantry Chapel on loan from the British Museum, alongside a selection of paintings, drawings and prints of this historic landmark from the Wakefield collection. Alfred Wallis, The Hold House Port Mear Square Island Port Mear Beach, c Tate, London, 2011 Wakefield s collection was established with gifts from local individuals and was developed through ambitious and pioneering acquisition policies committed to the support of contemporary art. Consequently, the collection has a core of work by some of the most significant British artists of the 20 th century including Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, both born in the Wakefield district. 5 ARTIST COMMISSIONS EVENTS OUTDOOR SCULPTURE Heather and Ivan Morison To book contact Enjoy the gallery garden with sculptures by Barbara Hepworth and Hubert Dalwood, recently given to the city from a private collection, alongside other pieces from our collection. JAMES PYMAN Sheffield-based artist James Pyman has been commissioned to make a new work for the historic watermill that sits in The Hepworth Wakefield s grounds. The watermill dates from the turn of the 19 th century and would have been used originally as a corn mill and later as part of the bargebuilding industry still evident today on the river Calder. Pyman captures the moment of flux between the mill s past and future through a highly rendered and detailed account of the watermill as it stands now. Artists Heather and Ivan Morison have created a new work to mark the launch of The Hepworth Wakefield. It takes the form of an outdoor shelter for people to gather, relax, entertain and enjoy the waterfront location. The Black Cloud has been repositioned and modified in response to the architectural and industrial backdrop of The Hepworth Wakefield. The Morisons create powerful and sensory works that explore architecture and aspects of escape and refuge. Their work is an active engagement with materials, histories and sites. The Black Cloud was originally commissioned by Situations at the University of the West of England for Victoria Park, Bristol in The commission in Wakefield is supported by Art in Yorkshire.
