2 Yorkshire Sculpture Park What s On Spring /3 The only one of its kind, Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an extraordinary place that sets out to challenge, inspire, inform and delight. Over the last 34 years, YSP has become an international centre for modern and contemporary art, experienced and enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year. Where else can you explore open-air displays by some of the world s finest artists, enjoy fascinating exhibitions throughout five stunning galleries, be inspired by the natural beauty of an historic 500 acre estate, and get involved in a dynamic line up of events and activities? Over the coming months YSP, like many other arts organisations, faces major challenges as the Government reduces the deficit. After a period of sustained support the UK arts sector is thriving. Two thirds of the population enjoy the arts every year and we have the largest cultural economy in the world, relative to GDP. Despite these difficult times, YSP has an ambitious vision for 2011 and the future. This year, we ll continue to provide worldclass art for everyone with projects by Jaume Plensa and Shirin Neshat, among others. We will also open up 150 acres of historic parkland to the public for the very first time and relaunch our educational programme with a stunning new Learning Centre. To find out more visit

3 MAIN EXHIBITION Jaume Plensa from 9 April 2011 Jaume Plensa From 9 April 2011 Underground Gallery, Open Air Generously supported by YSP presents an extraordinary body of new and recent work by renowned Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. Encouraging tactile and sensory exploration, this vibrant exhibition includes a 50-metre curtain of poetry made of suspended steel letters, large illuminated sculptures in the landscape, and engraved gongs that visitors can strike to fill the gallery with sound. Plensa s sculpture gives physical form to the intangible, using the body as a way of exploring what it means to be human and engaging with universal themes: love, memory, language and despair. Other works need the presence of a human body to make them complete, such as Song of Songs. These glass cabins, immersed in coloured light, are only large enough for one visitor to enter and are spaces for solitary contemplation. Plensa has an international reputation and has completed significant public art projects around the world, including the momentous Crown Fountain (2004) in Chicago. In 2009 he created Dream, a 20-metre high sculpture for St Helens as part of Channel 4 s Big Art Project. A 20 catalogue with texts by Jeremy Strick, Kosme de Baranano and Laurie Peake, a 5 guidebook, and special exhibition merchandise are available from the YSP Shop, Galleries and website. YSP & OPERA NORTH PRESENT FOUR SEASONS: SPRING 9 April, 7.30pm, performance only 15. Twocourse dinner deal at 6pm in the YSP Restaurant 30. Book online or call In the beautiful, intimate surroundings of the Chapel, musicians perform music and song to celebrate the opening of the Jaume Plensa show and to evoke the spring season. With music ranging from Purcell to Mahler, and including Vivaldi and Piazzolla, who both wrote for the four seasons, this is a one-off performance that promises to bring audiences closer to the very essence of spring. Featuring cellist Matthew Sharp ( virtuosic, charismatic, brimming with verve and poetry, The Times) and guitarist Craig Ogden ( miraculous playing, The Telegraph). 4/5

4 CURRENT ARTISTS/PROJECTS Throughout the Park and Galleries 6/7 Shirin Neshat: Soliloquy 5 March 26 June 2011 Chapel A rare showing of Neshat s poetic film, on loan from Tate, in YSP s listed Georgian Chapel. This unique context provides a serene yet provocative space for the installation which explores themes of identity, exile and cultural history. With characteristic subtlety, Neshat renders East and West as cultures in exile from each other, but which have distinct parallels and possible points of connection, revealing beauty and difference within each place. Film Screening: Women Without Men A quietly tremendous film which ensnares both the heart and the mind. The Guardian 24 March, 6.30pm, 4. See page 14. In Soliloquy Neshat uses architecture as a cultural reference as she walks through two distinct landscapes; one in Mardin, Turkey and the other in Albany, New York. The two films make visual the state of longing and dislocation experienced as a result of being born in one country, living in another and belonging to neither. Using dual screen projections facing one another, the viewer is physically immersed in hauntingly beautiful imagery and evocative sound. Neshat was born in Iran in 1957 and, after leaving school, moved to the USA to study art. She was exiled in 1979 following the Islamic Revolution in Iran and now lives in New York. Neshat is an important international artist who was recently awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival for her first feature film, Women Without Men. STRUCTURE & MATERIAL Claire Barclay, Becky Beasley, Karla Black 31 March 26 June 2011 Longside Gallery An Arts Council Collection exhibition curated by Katrina Brown and Caroline Douglas Structure & Material investigates the work of three significant young artists who each investigate the way we create meaning through form. Unlikely sculptural materials such as cosmetics, sugar paper, blackboard paint and brass hinges, or craft in the form of turned wood and tapestry, are employed to diverse and distinctive effect. From elements that are sometimes meagre or over-familiar, new forms are created that are mysterious and highly evocative. Structure & Material features a comprehensive body of work by each artist and includes recent acquisitions from the Arts Council Collection and installations made in response to Longside Gallery. 5 CURRENT ARTISTS/PROJECTS Throughout the Park and Galleries See pages 13, 14 and 15 for Mel Brimfield and Rebecca Chesney events. New work in the open air 8/9 Mel Brimfield: This is Performance Art 9 April 3 July 2011 Bothy Gallery Mel Brimfield is a London-based artist and curator with a particular interest in performance art. Brimfield creates playful, alternative histories, inspired by real artists, artworks and pop culture. Recognising that performance art is difficult to document and represent accurately, Brimfield toys with the truth and produces fabricated information, objects and ephemera to support her often comical parallel realities. In this exhibition, Brimfield re-imagines the space as Room 27 of a major museum survey entitled This is Performance Art. Brimfield merges artists such as Gilbert and George with footage of Morecambe and Wise, and shows a film about the fictional sculptor and dancer Alex Owens, based on the female star of the popular 1980s film Flashdance. The exhibition captures Brimfield s joyfully subversive capacity to create entirely fictional scenarios that are intuitively plausible. Rebecca Chesney: Diligent Observation 9 April 3 July 2011 Garden Gallery Rebecca Chesney explores and reveals changing environments and the impact of human activity, creating installations that not only capture a sense of wonder in the natural world but also the inescapable struggle between survival and death. Chesney s project demonstrates YSP s unique ability to provide a landscape for art, in this case as a laboratory in which to research and develop new work. The exhibition maps the landscape of the Bretton Estate in relation to its populations of bees and wildflowers and includes drawings based on the sounds of bees and their hives, dead plant and animal specimens and a conceptual work for an extensive landscape intervention, created with bee-friendly plants. Martin Creed Work No. 700, 2007 Lower Park Martin Creed creates order where there is none, offering a simple frame through which people can see all the chaos of the world. Work No. 700 is the largest sculpture in a series made from stacking objects that ascend or descend in scale. The work is made up of three progressively slimmer I-beams stacked together, simultaneously eliminating and alluding to the intended function of the objects by making them unusable, but retaining a quality that suggests they are second-hand. Creed s practice takes in aspects of Minimalism and found art and is characterised by a spirit of enquiry posing questions about taste, commodification and reality versus the unreal. Courtesy the artist and Hauser & Wirth Eva Rothschild Someone & Someone, 2008 (Edition 3 of 3) Open Air To coincide with the inaugural exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield, YSP is showing a work by Eva Rothschild. Using varied materials, from leather to Perspex, Rothschild creates sculpture which hovers between figuration and abstraction. Someone & Someone surpasses the limitations of material to resemble two figures and, decorated with day-glo paint, is a striking addition to the landscape. In her own words Rothschild is interested in the ways of looking that go with concepts of faith and in how things are invested with a power above and beyond their materiality, the transference of spirituality onto objects. 6 CURRENT ARTISTS/PROJECTS New work in the open air HENRY MOORE From the Arts Council Collection 31 March 26 June 2011 Longside Gallery Project Space Barbara Hepworth & Landscape From 22 April 10 July 2011 Upper Space Henry Moore & Barbara Hepworth From 21 May 2011 Open Air 100 acres of undulating hills are home to one of the world s most significant open-air displays of Henry Moore bronzes. The selection of sculptures changes this year with new loans from the Henry Moore Foundation including Upright Motive No. 5 and Mother and Child: Block Seat. 10/11 Henry Moore is an important figure for the Arts Council Collection. He was a key advisor to the acquisitions committee during the early 1950s, shaping the Collection by advocating the acquisition of a significant group of post-war British sculpture. His representation within the Collection is also very strong, with sculptures and works on paper spanning five decades. This new Project Space display offers an opportunity to enjoy these rich holdings. During spring 2011, all 26 works by Moore in the Collection will be on display in Yorkshire, including nine sculptures and 15 works on paper in this exhibition. To celebrate the launch of The Hepworth Wakefield, YSP has worked with the Hepworth Estate to display photographs, sculpture, film and ephemera that share the artist s thoughts about landscape and its influence on her work. On Hillside is Barbara Hepworth s seminal Family of Man, a beautiful and poignant representation of figures in the landscape, and Squares with Two Circles, on loan from Tate. These displays coincide with the opening of The Hepworth Wakefield, Yorkshire s major new art gallery opening in May Find out more at
