4 bienvenue 4 4 bon festival! The 26th presentation of the Alliance Française French Film Festival will be my very first, and as such, it gives me great pleasure to celebrate the occasion with all of you. Indeed, it is most heartening to know that the Festival has been such an enormous success in Australia. Such success truly embodies the creativity and influence of French cinema and is largely due to the richness of our industrys output, with more than 250 French films being produced each year. This richness is evidenced by the selection for the 2015 Festival, which offers a diverse array of films for all cinematic tastes. In fact, even the most discerning movie-goer should find several films to enjoy! This year, there are 49 movies to discover; 49 occasions on which to experience emotion, humour, drama and share the masterpieces of tomorrow with friends and family. There will also be the opportunity to revisit several classic films that commemorate the First World War, which comprise a special section of the programme will also see us reach new cities and audiences via expansion of our venues. For the first time, Hobart will host the Festival and so join the circle of Australian capital cities that showcase the event. Likewise, the inclusion of Parramatta will increase the number of participating localities in New South Wales, by hosting a selected number of screenings at the Riverside Theatres in April. Also for this 26th year, David Stratton and Margaret Pomeranz, Australias two most esteemed cinema critics, who are well known and held in great affection by all, have kindly agreed to be the Festivals Patrons. We have given them carte blanche to choose their favourite films. I thank them wholeheartedly for joining us and their presence further illustrates the strong cultural links between Australia and France. The first ever visit to Australia, last November, by a President of the French Republic, was also an occasion that reaffirmed these ties, to which the Festival has been an early witness. The success of the Festival also marks the enormously fruitful collaboration of Team France, between the French State, our industries and the Alliances Françaises across Australia. It is a shared success and I would now like to deeply thank all of our partners, teams and volunteers, who each year make it possible to stage this great, cultural get-together. Bon Festival! Christophe Lecourtier Ambassador of France to Australia

6 opening night Toronto International Film festival Special Presentations v v 6 6 gemma bovery A jewel of humour and intelligence beautifully performed La Croix When an English couple named Gemma and Charles Bovery move into a small Normandy town, Martin Joubert, the baker and resident Flaubert fan, cant believe it. Here are two real life figures who seem to be replicating the behaviour of his favourite fictional characters right before his eyes. This charming retelling of the classic Madame Bovary story is a visual feast, from the picturesque countryside to the so-good-you-canalmost-taste-it patisserie. Gemma Arterton is the playfully updated version of Frances most famous heroine with Fabrice Luchini as the smitten baker and films narrator. Complications ensue when Gemma meets a dashing aristocrat just as the plot unfolds in the book. Skilfully directed by Anne Fontaine, who also made the similarly sumptuous Coco Before Chanel, Gemma Bovery is based on the popular graphic novel by Posy Simmonds. Balancing real sensuality and hilarious one-liners, this is an endearing film about the dangers of stirring passions, with Arterton radiant as the titular bored housewife and Luchini delightful as always in the role of the comically obsessed baker. 8 8 8 at the festival with margaret and david alliance française french film festival 2015 patrons There is an ongoing beautiful romance between French culture and Australia, never seen more intensely than with Australians love of French cinema. France was the birthplace of cinema and that early history has a direct connection to this country with the 1912 visit of the lesser-known Méliès brother, Gaston, to this country. He was in search of the exotic in his travels around the Pacific and Asia and his documenting of indigenous life is a precious part of the collection in our National Film and Sound Archive. But France didnt just invent cinema, they revolutionized it with the Nouvelle Vague, introducing the world to the talents of Jean-Luc Godard, Eric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette, Jacques Demy and thank goodness there was a woman included in that group, Agnès Varda. How we worshipped at their shrine. It was exciting cinema, different, daring and literate. The French ability to produce such a wide range of cinema is enticing, from winsome romances like Amélie (2001) to hard-hitting urban dramas like La Haine (1995), and for their ability to produce stars of such talent and durability as Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva. That diversity is reflected in the Alliance Française French Film Festival of 2015 at which we are honoured to be the patrons. There are some marvelous films to be found in this program, we hope you will join us in celebrating them. Our Festival picks are featured in this section, and on page 42. and Margaret Pomeranz David Stratton

9 Venice International Film Festival Official Competition Toronto International Film festival Special Presentations A MOVING, UNMISSABLE FILM EXPERIENCE MARGARET POMERANZ One night in a provincial French city, after missing his train back to Paris, Marc meets Sylvie. The pair wander the streets until morning, talking happily, falling in love and making a date to meet again. When circumstances prevent this reunion, Marc searches for Sylvie but ends up finding someone else: Sophie. What Marc doesnt realise is that Sophie is Sylvies sister. After a stellar 40-year career, director Benoît Jacquot proves that he is still at the top of his game with the classic love triangle of 3 Hearts. Echoing great Hollywood melodramas such as An Affair To Remember, but told with a fresh, contemporary voice this is both an emotionally rich and rewarding enjoyably suspenseful film. The cast is superb, with a palpable sense of magnetism between Marc (Benoît Poelvoorde), Sylvie (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Sophie (Chiara Mastroianni). 10 Niels Arestrup and AndrÉ DussoLlier give commanding performances in this totally gripping drama DAVID stratton 10 It is August 25th, The Allies have entered Paris, and shortly before dawn the German military governor of the city is preparing to dynamite the capitals famous monuments and bridges on Hitlers orders. Of course we know that he changed his mind but why? Was it thanks to his meeting with the Swedish Consul-General, Raoul Nordling? This engrossing historical drama from Volker Schlöndorff, the acclaimed German director of The Tin Drum, has been adapted from the French playwright Cyril Gélys 2011 successful stage show. Niels Arestrup plays the loyal Third Reich governor, with André Dussollier as the man who must convince him not to destroy a city. Full of patriotism and passion, this is a tour-de-force by both lead actors (who originated the roles on stage) with their sparkling dialogue set against wartime Paris. Less about the horrors of war and more about the art of negotiation, Diplomacy is a fascinating film about duty, history and what was behind an 11th hour decision to save the City of Lights. davids pick diplomacy Volker Schlöndorff Niels Arestrup, André Dussollier, Burghart Klaussner, Robert Stadlober, Charlie Nelson germany HISTORy DRAMA 84 MINS 2014 M

The year is 1954, the war is beginning and village schoolteacher Daru (Mortensen), an ex-french Army soldier, is caught in the crossfire. Born in Algeria but Spanish by lineage, hes a man out of time and place, perceived as alien by both locals and colonisers alike. So when he reluctantly agrees to escort a dissident (rising star Reda Kateb, A Prophet) to a regional police station to face trial for murder, a series of incidents and revelations force the question of where Darus loyalties truly lie. Based on a short story by Albert Camus, writer/director David Oelhoffens masterful, breathtakingly-shot drama bears all the hallmarks of a classic frontier western, yet carries strong contemporary resonances. 12 Cannes International Film Festival Un Certain regard - Official Selection Lovers of well-made thriller and tasteful eroticism will be rewarded by Amalrics stylish and intelligent treatment DAVID stratton 12 After many false starts, the acclaimed novel The Blue Room by the Belgian writer, Georges Simenon, has finally been successfully adapted for the big screen by Mathieu Amalric. The renowned actor-turned-auteur shares screenwriting credits with one of the films stars, Stéphanie Cléau, and the film remains faithful to the novels tale of an illicit liaison between family man, Julien (Mathieu Amalric) and a pharmacists wife, Delphine (Léa Drucker). The unvoiced answer to Delphines question to Julien, If I were suddenly free, could you free yourself too? imbues this taut, claustrophobic thriller with a pervasive sense of foreboding. The intimate tale shifts from the sensual moments in a hotel to life beyond the blue room, and a crime that will trigger the collapse of the walls separating Juliens two lives. Will he survive unscathed? Amalric has cleverly blended stellar performances, a deft, non-linear narrative, a superb score by Grégoire Hetzel and masterful suspense to deliver a truly original and unforgettable film. davids pick the blue room Mathieu Amalric Mathieu Amalric, Léa Drucker, Stéphanie Cléau, Laurent Poitrenaux, Serge Bozon crime thriller 76 MINS 2014 CTC

13 Venice International Film Festival Official Competition & Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor - Romain Paul delaporte HAS SUBTEXT DOWN TO A FINE ART, HER SCENES ARE SUBTLE AND INCREDIBLY MOVING MARGARET POMERANZ The eagerly-awaited second film from writer/director Alix Delaporte (Angèle and Tony) is a profoundly affecting drama about a young boy determined to change the course of his future. Soccer mad 14-year-old Victor (extraordinary newcomer Romain Paul) lives in a community of trailers and huts on the seaside with his single mother Nadia (Clotilde Hesme). One day after practice, Nadia announces shed like him to go and live with her parents. Victor decides instead to seek out his long-absent father, the famous conductor Samuel Rovinski (Grégory Gadebois) who has recently arrived to rehearse Mahlers Sixth Symphony with the local orchestra, and is completely unaware of Victors existence. Samuel is less than welcoming, but the initial hostility soon turns to an awkward kind of tenderness, and possibly love. Intimate and emotionally satisfying, Delaportes film is a poetic, neo-realist jewel. Hesme and Gadebois deliver wonderful, nuanced performances, but its Romain Paul who, appearing in almost every frame, completely steals the show. 14 Toronto International Film Festival Official Selection Liberskis version of the story gains enormous benefit from the charming central performance by Pauline Étienne DAVID stratton 14 Based on Belgian writer Amélie Nothombs bestselling semi-autobiographical novel, Tokyo Fiancée is now an entertaining coming-of-age comedy, which will appeal to fans of Jean-Pierre Jeunets Amélie and Sofia Coppolas Lost In Translation. The film concerns Amélie (Pauline Étienne), who is in love with all things Japanese, which prompts her to buy a one-way ticket to Tokyo and completely immerse herself in the culture. Amélie decides to become a French tutor, and soon finds herself enjoying a passionate relationship with her only student, the charming Rinri (Taichi Inoue). As the couple explores the joys (and awkwardness) of their first real romance and the colourful city around them, many cultural barriers fall but some still remain. 31 Cannes International Film Festival Official Selection Academy Awards French entry for Best Foreign Film Bertrand Bonellos glossily intuitive vision is pure haute couture Variety Saint Laurent is a spectacular celebration of the famous and flamboyant designers artistry, drive and inspiration. This fascinating biopic focuses on Yves Saint Laurent at the zenith of his celebrity and explores his relationships, neuroses, addictions and insecurities. It is, appropriately, a true work of art and Frances entry in the 2015 Academy Awards. The always charismatic Gaspard Ulliel delivers a compelling performance as the tortured iconoclast, ably supported by Aymeline Valade and Léa Seydoux as his muses. However, it is the performances of Louis Garrel as the preening model and Jérémie Renier as Pierre Bergé that are the real stand-outs. 42 42 lest we forget with the support of institut français A hundred years ago, more than 400,000 Australian soldiers left Australia to fight on the European, Turkish and Middle East battlefields. More than 60,000 of them died. The first World War has left many scars and cinema has played a strong role in portraying these as well as presenting personal histories. This year, the Alliance Française French Film Festival commemorates the soldiers by presenting three French masterpieces dedicated to this period of time. This is also for us the occasion to say once again: merci l Australie Grand Illusion is now more than 75 years old, but it has lost none of its lustre or its power as the ultimate anti-war film. Directed by Jean Renoir, the film is full of wonderful performances, thrilling escapes and moments of touching irony, with its themes of endurance, class and the folly of war still relevant today.
