Alice Auditions Auditions for Alice, adapted and directed by Charlotte Jacobs, will be on Sunday afternoon, 23rd February. For more details please go to the Auditions area upon the EAT website New Building at the Adult Education Centre but the Show Goes On! Later in the year old buildings at the Brampton Road site will be demolished and a new building will be erected. Luckily the demolition doesn t include the theatre! The work is expected to take three to four months. During the building work car access to the theatre will be via the entrance to the Danson Youth Centre. Pedestrians will be able to gain access through a small gate at the right-hand side of the main Centre building. At the moment we don t have a commencement date for the work but we thought we should forewarn our audiences. AGM The Edward Alderton Theatre will hold its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 25th February at 8.15 p.m. at the theatre. The meeting is open to paid up Full and Associate Members. Only Full Members are eligible to stand for the Committee. The meeting will also see the launch of the new season with many of the directors there to tell you all about their productions. BOGOF at the EAT! Buy One Get One Free (BOGOF) on tickets for Monday nights only. This will apply for the whole of this current season, running until Alice. This means that two Monday tickets, booked and paid for together, will cost 10 in total. This offer does not apply to members 8 tickets. The play opens in a rural Irish pub with Brendan, the owner of the bar, and Jack, a car mechanic and garage owner. These two begin to discuss their respective days and are soon joined by Jim, a handyman of the area known for odd jobs. The three then discuss Valerie, a pretty young woman from Dublin who has just rented an old house in the area. Finbar, a businessman, arrives with Valerie, and the play revolves around reminiscence and the kind of banter which only comes about amongst men who have a shared upbringing. After a few drinks, the group begin telling stories with a supernatural slant, related to their own experience or those of others in the area, and which arise out of the popular preoccupations of Irish folklore: ghosts, fairies and mysterious happenings. The Weir is a play written by Conor McPherson in It was first produced at The Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in London, England, on 4 July It first appeared on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre on 1 April It has since been performed in Toronto, Dublin, Belfast, Bolton, Bury St Edmunds, Hamburg, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Chicago, Buffalo, Washington, D.C., Detroit, San Jose, and San Francisco. And now Bexleyheath! McPherson was born in Dublin and was educated at University College Dublin. McPherson began writing his first plays there as a member of UCD Dramsoc, the college s dramatic society, and went on to found Fly by Night Theatre Company which produced several of his plays. He is considered one of the best contemporary Irish playwrights; his plays have attracted good reviews, and have been performed internationally (notably in the West End and on Broadway). The Weir opened at the Royal Court before transferring to the West End and Broadway. It won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play for A story I do be telling myself - How I ended up with the opportunity of directing The Weir It all started back in early 2012 when I was due to star in The Weir myself (as the character Finbar) in a drama society production at the University of Kent. I was all prepared for the show and learnt the lines, but unfortunately never got to perform it due to lack of performance space. Since then it has been dwelling on my mind to complete what I first started. Then in the same year of 2012 I pitched the idea to Wendy Marsh, the Artistic Director of the Edward Alderton Theatre, with many weird and wonderful ideas for the play. I have been so grateful, so lucky and so privileged to be able to put on this performance. The unfortunate cancelling of the pantomime this year has really helped me to hone my new ideas and has allowed me to be as creative as possible with the words as well as the set. I was also very blessed with my cast. I couldn t have wished for a more talented bunch of individuals to star in my first production; they have exceeded in character creation, really bringing the play to life. It has been a pleasure to see it flourish. This has been a real joyful experience and I look forward to doing more productions with the theatre. Nicholas Hewitt, Director
